"The crowd chanted Lewis Hamilton's name as he did his interview immediately after qualifying, and he sounded overcome with emotion as he recalled his record sixth pole position at the British Grand Prix."

Andrew Benson's considered verdict is live on the site now. Read it here - and rejoice in the utter lack of football references. #f1scominghome

Here's how we're looking at the front of the grid for tomorrow then. It's a very similar grid set-up to last year's British Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton in front of the two Ferraris - although Raikkonen was second and Vettel third on the grid 12 months ago.

It was a hero's welcome back from the Silverstone crowd - on their feet as Lewis Hamilton secured his fourth successive pole position at the British Grand Prix. He leapt out of his car, punched the air and was absolutely delighted with his effort - as were the majority of this crowd.

Hamilton's hopes of winning a record sixth British Grand Prix are very much on track. Sebastian Vettel leads the championship by just one point and starts alongside Hamilton on the front row tomorrow. All set for a great race.

Valtteri Bottas, who has qualified fourth for Mercedes, tells to Sky Sports: "I think my final qualifying lap was going well until the last two corners. I went a bit too deep into Turn 16 and lost a couple of tenths. Other than that, it was good. Ferrari look strong. Red Bull seem a bit off, but you never know."

  7. 'My worries are where the Ferraris are'published at 15:31 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

Mercedes are still concerned about the threat of Ferrari, clearly.

Here's their non-executive chairman Niki Lauda, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was close. Lewis did a special lap and it's all down to him. My worries are where the Ferraris are. They are really close. The Ferraris are really quick in the straight and really quick through the corners."

Anthony Stephenson: WOW. Best quali session of the year. Thought Kimi was gonna do it for a second then! fastest in sectors one and three. What a lap from Lewis - my word.

What a lap indeed, Anthony. Hamilton talks a lot about how the crowd at Silverstone give him that extra push. I think they might just have made the difference there. They might be needed again tomorrow, too...

  9. 'This track is getting less favourable for us'published at 15:25 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

Max Verstappen, who is fifth on the grid for Red Bull, has been speaking to Sky Sports: "We lose more than a second on the straights so this track is getting less and less favourable for us.

"But the car is strong. For tomorrow, it's going to be a bit warmer, but it's going to be a struggle with the guys ahead. Last time we said it was going to be a boring race, and it was a very entertaining race, so let's see."

  10. 'I had all the tools to be faster'published at 15:18 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

Kimi Raikkonen, who is rarely happy, is asked if he was happy with the qualifying run that has brought him third place on the grid.

"Not really," he says. "I think I had all the tools today to be faster but lost the front wheel going into Turn 16 in the last lap. I think my car should be good for tomorrow. It will not be easy. You might see a few different things tomorrow. We will aim for the top for sure."

  11. 'I'm happy with second'published at 15:16 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

Sebastian Vettel, who qualified second, was suffering with a neck problem through qualifying, and says: "I had a bit of an issue in practice but I’m OK now."

Asked if he thought he could get pole, he adds: "This morning, no. It was very close. The last lap I was very happy with, but I lost a lot of pace in the straight but I’m happy with second and it gives us a chance for tomorrow."

Lewis Hamilton is shaking with emotion as he reacts to that. Signalling to the crowd, he says: "These guys are the best. Aw man, I gave it everything I could, and it was so close with these Ferraris. and I was just praying I could do it for you guys. Without you guys, I wouldn't have been able to do it."
