  1. Vettel set for qualifyingpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

Sebastian Vettel, despite the neck problem that curtailed FP3 for him, should be OK for qualifying. Here's the latest from our chief F1 writer Andrew Benson.

This is the trophy that is presented to the winner of the British Grand Prix. It was first presented to Luigi Villoresi at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1948, before the race became the first to be staged in the Formula 1 World Championships in 1950.

Forty different drivers have got their hands on the trophy, with both Lewis Hamilton and Jim Clark receiving the trophy five times each.

Can Hamilton make it a record-breaking sixth win tomorrow?

A reminder of how the drivers' championship stands going into this weekend. Lewis Hamilton's 14-point lead was wiped out in Austria last time out as he failed to finish, with Sebastian Vettel taking third place to squeak just ahead with nine of 21 races gone. Max Verstappen's first win of the season - and Red Bull's first ever at the Red Bull Ring - moved him up to fifth.

Just to pick up on that point, there have been four race winners this season (Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen) - and bear in mind that there are only seven drivers currently in the competition who have ever won a Formula 1 Grand Prix - the current big six plus Fernando Alonso.

Kimi Raikkonen is third in the drivers' championship, having not won any of the season's opening nine races.

This pair have come over from Mayo, in the Republic of Ireland, for their second British Grand Prix experience after attending Silverstone five years ago.

"It's going to be a very tight race, Lewis was on top in the first session yesterday and Vettel hit back in the second," said Jessica, who has supported Ferrari ever since the Michael Schumacher days, although she expects disappointment in the overall title race this season.

"My heart says Vettel and Ferrari, my mind says Lewis. But this season has been really exciting with the different winners."

Frank Williams is watching on at Silverstone this weekend, from the garage of the team he founded in 1977. And that gives me an excuse to take this little trip down memory lane, back to a time when Williams were F1 giants...

Does Britain need a Grand Prix?

Andrew Haines: I’m guessing Silverstone is one of the best physically attended races in the calendar. Why would F1 want to upset us loyal British fans? Make it accessible and affordable for the promoters and the fans who have historically turned up. PS. This is written at Stowe Corner.

Miranda Lane: Of course we need a British Grand Prix The true home of motorsport plus so many F1 teams close by and one of the historic tracks....British motorsport fans are simply the best in the world. Why would Liberty Media take that away??

Dennis Ethan: Losing Silverstone from the F1 calendar would be calamitous to the sport. It'd make no logic when almost all cars operate from there.

It is a big weekend for these two. Well, sort of. The imitation Sergey Sirotkin and Max Verstappen are certainly proving popular with loads of fans posing with these versions of the drivers.

The real Max won last time out but couldn't set a time in second practice yesterday - before placing fifth in final practice this morning - while the real Sergey is the only driver of the 20 yet to score a point this season.

Does Britain need a Grand Prix?

Peter Harrison: As an Aussie I have no trouble in saying F1 should have a British race. Hamilton in 2008 at Silverstone, Senna in Donnington in 1993 are two of my F1 memories. Plus great races at Brands Hatch. The British race doesn’t have to be at Silverstone, but it should be in the UK.

Good point there, Peter - is there a case for taking the race somewhere else in the UK if a Silverstone deal cannot be reached? And if so, where?

  10. Gasly to run in qualifyingpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

Pierre Gasly did no running in final practice after his Toro Rosso team-mate Brendon Hartley's accident caused the session to be red flagged.

Gasly, though, will take part in qualifying - as our chief F1 writer Andrew Benson reports.

  11. 'Where are the working class F1 drivers?'published at 13:08 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

A bit of reading for you as we wait for qualifying, which is around 50 minutes away.

My colleague Niamh Lewis has looked into the sheer amount of money it takes to get into Formula 1, and asks if the door is closed to working-class drivers as a result.

As Lewis Hamilton says in the piece: "When people ask me where the next me is coming from, I say: 'No, these kids come from wealthy backgrounds, not from the struggle I came from.'"

No prizes for guessing who these two are cheering on. Louis Jansen and Didi Crover have come to Silverstone from The Hague, Netherlands to cheer on their man Max Verstappen.

"We have been to Spa before but this is the first time we've been to Silverstone," said Louis. "Hopefully Max is going to be on the podium this weekend."

Good news regarding Brendon Hartley after his horrible crash during FP3. He has been cleared to drive by the experts in the medical centre. Of course, he would need a car to take part in qualifying - his Toro Rosso was mangled in the accident.

Sebastian Vettel ended FP3 a few minutes early - there was a question as to whether there was something wrong with his Ferrari, but out pit lane reporter Jennie Gow tweets that this is not the case.

Oliver Winfield: Silverstone is the home of motor sport and I'll be devastated if we lose the British GP from the calendar. Most of the F1 teams operate here anyway so it seems a bit ridiculous to be honest.

Colin Guest: Does a fish need water??? Of course F1 must have a race in England. If not on a track, then around the houses. One thing is certain, without a race in England, then F1 would be the biggest loser.

Steve Unex: It's important Silverstone stays on the calendar not least because of its historical importance. Liberty owes us at least that.

  19. Tyre talkpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

You’re probably to hear quite a lot of talk about tyres getting hot over the course of this weekend. What’s new, you might ask? And you’d have a point. But, anyway, the combination of the high temperatures and new track surface means the tyres are overheating.

“The tyres are hot,” Sebastian Vettel said. “They are too hot, but I think everyone is struggling. The magic this weekend will be to keep them as cool as possible.”

Thermal management will be the key, which means measuring pace on long runs - and even over one lap.

“It’s hard to keep the tyres in shape for the last sector,” Force India’s Esteban Ocon said.

Does Britain need a Grand Prix?

Qualifying starts at 14:00 BST, and I'm going to keep the live text going during the break. One of the things you might want to talk about is the future of Silverstone. As it stands, the 2019 race will be the last at the track, unless an agreement between its owners and F1 management can be made.

How important is a deal? Does Britain really need a Grand Prix? Can F1 survive without it? Thoughts please, via Twitter using the hashtag #bbcf1
