Red Bull boss Christian Horner said: "We all regard him as one of the best drivers out there, but he doesn't fit in with the Red Bull philosophy, and the junior programme we are investing in."

Alonso wants an apology after Red Bull denied his claim... Andrew Benson has more here.

Ricciardo has made up good ground since his problems this morning.

He's currently in sixth, and is running smoothly around the track. The consensus on Twitter after his announcement on moving to Renault next year, was that he wouldn't be as competitive. He won in China and and Monaco, this year... can he win again this year? Send us your thoughts via #bbcf1

He's a Belgian. They had them for lunch in the McLaren garage, presumably in honour of Belgium. Vandoorne needs a few more waffles to build up the energy because he's bottom currently.

If you didn't see my 10:05 post. I shall inform you it's National Waffle Day. Belgian waffles or "Leige Waffles" as they're commonly known as, are a tradition and should be consumed while at Spa according to Max Verstappen.

These look delicious. Sweet, and savoury and with bacon. The bacon is optional. Thanks Andrew for the photo.

With a combined age of 42, they're still younger than Andrew Benson. Probably... He won't tell me how old he is.

  14. Bigger challenges for Alonsopublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 24 August 2018

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Spa

There are nine races left to enjoy the skills of Fernando Alonso, but if he will be missed by those who watch the sport and admire him, he doesn’t give the impression he will share that feeling. He says he had “bigger challenges elsewhere than F1 can offer me”, by which he means trying to win the Indy 500.

He added: “When you come to the same place for many years and you repeat the same thing, see the same people, there is one day that maybe you don’t get so emotional about the challenges. That’s the reason why.”

He acknowledged he would probably be carrying on if he was in a Mercedes or a Ferrari, but even then he gave the strong impression of a man for whom 17 years of competing in F1 was very much enough: “If you are in one of those two teams, probably you keep going, even if you don’t enjoy or if you enjoy the races or the trips or the amount of years you’ve been doing the same thing, that’s for sure.”

Speaking of Alonso, he's back in the car for FP2.

Kudos to Lando Norris who finished 18th in FP1, ahead of Vandoorne who had technical difficulties. And he was quicker than Sergey Sirotkin... but is it really that hard?
