Kayleigh: Hoping for a Vandoorne drive at McLaren next year! Fave Alo memory would have to be all the radio sass ‘the engine feels good, much slower than before. Amazing’ is a personal favourite.

Carl Ford: Who will partner Sainz at McLaren? I'd like to see McLaren keep Stoffel as I think he's talented, plus it gives consistency. However, Lando needs an F1 seat.

Lando Norris is already looking very accomplished. He has been around that midfield, he looks like he can hustle the car, he can handle this car around this track and that is a very encouraging sign inside 45 minutes of your FP1 debut. He has nothing to lose, he is the young prodigy who has a chance to impress.

Stoffel Vandoorne is the man who is under pressure, he has been behind Fernando Alonso most of the time and now he has a young challenger.

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

It is a chance for Norris to prove what he can do and for Vandoorne it is a chance to stamp his authority over Norris.

There is a lot of pressure, add in a bit of an Esteban Ocon (to McLaren) rumour.

Kayleigh: "Ooh a female name at the top of the #BBCF1, external text commentary page. Yay for more ladies"

Thanks Kayleigh. I'm one of three females on the BBC F1 team (including Jennie), apparently the first female F1 live text commentator since 2011, and I'm the youngest ever!

Daniel Ricciardo, Stoffel Vandoorne, and Sergey Sirotkin are yet to set times. Ricciardo and Sirotkin have both had issues. With 49 minutes to go, there's plenty of time left in FP1.

Red Bull are looking at Daniel Ricciardo's car. We know it is not a water issue, but we know it is something wrong with the engine, with the team working furiously around the rear of the car.

Tracey Pankhurst: Really feel for RP Force India. I can understand, for business reasons, why Renault, McLaren and Williams forced this situation for them losing their points but I wish there could’ve been some camaraderie between the teams!

  18. 'You can overtake'published at 10:25 British Summer Time 24 August 2018

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

It is a shame for Bottas that he is taking a grid drop, but for it to happen at this track is not too bad. It is a track where you can overtake.

  19. Grid penalty coming for Bottaspublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 24 August 2018

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at Spa

Mercedes are making some changes here - both cars are running new Power Units. These are also of a new, upgraded specification. Lewis has three new elements, including the MGU-H energy recovery part (his third of the season). Valtteri has a complete new Power Unit, with all six elements fresh. As this goes beyond his permitted allocation for the season, grid penalties will be incurred for Bottas.

Mercedes customer teams are also running new PUs of the same upgraded spec.
