  3. How about that then?published at 07:32 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

The person who won't be very happy in the Mercedes garage will be Esteban Ocon who missed out on getting a drive for this year. Toto Wolff said he will get a seat for 2020, and since Valtteri Bottas' contract was renewed last year for one year plus an optional extension, this looks like the Finn is stomping his authority all over his position at Mercedes.

He got off to a great start last season but he had some bad luck including losing out on a win in Baku after puncturing during the final couple of laps while he was leading.

The Finn made some podium appearances throughout the season, but he didn't win a single race and fell to pieces later on.

Bottas was Hamilton's domestique, and despite Mercedes not officially admitting it, after the Hungarian Grand Prix, Wolff said in an interview that Bottas had been a "great wingman" to Hamilton.

    But not this year.

Valtteri Bottas becomes the third Finn to win at Melbourne, after victories for Mika Hakkinen (pictured) in 1998 and two successes - in 2007 and 2013 - for Kimi Raikkonen.

It's all in the new beard, and Fanni will be proud.

  6. 'Truly enjoyable'published at 07:16 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

Some more quotes from race winner Valtteri Bottas, who tells Sky Sports F1: "My best race ever so far so I'm really pleased. The race start was the key moment, I had the pace and it would've been a shame to be stuck behind another car.

"The car was amazing, truly enjoyable. Twenty-six is better than 25 and in the end I got it [the point for fastest lap]. It is a bit risky with worn tyres to go for it, but it was worth it. Every point will count and I couldn't be happier for myself or the team."

  7. 'I have to work on my starts more'published at 07:11 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

Second-placed Lewis Hamilton tells Sky Sports F1: "It was a really great weekend for the team, after the start it was pretty much done and about making sure we got the car home.

"It was a solid weekend, I just have to work on my starts more. There wasn't a problem, I just didn't get a good one."

  8. 'He was the benchmark and he would destroy everyone'published at 07:05 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, speaking on Valtteri Bottas' performance, he says: "We are very pleased, especially with the second half of last season he was written off, but he bounces back in the most dominant way, and he’s been in control for most of the weekend.

"I just remember his early years in F3 when he was the benchmark and he would destroy everyone and that was lost last year. When he came back after winter he said 'I'm back'

"I think he really worked hard and enjoyed the rallying he did this winter. You can see the extra point which nobody gave much notice to, become important at the end, and Valtteri was bang off the line.

Speaking on the Ferrari's, he says: "I think were surprised that we had such a good pace and they didn’t have any at all."

Speaking on Hamilon's first pitstop, Wolff says: "I don’t think it was a mistake we could’ve ended up behind Vettel."

  9. 'I'm pretty flat right now'published at 07:00 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Daniel Ricciardo, whose race ended on lap 31 after destroying his front wing on the opening lap, tells BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm gutted for sure, I hit a gutter sometimes you feel you can get away with that at every other track.

"I had the run on Perez, I just moved, dropped my wheel on the grass, then I felt a big bump and thought something would happen into turn one and it did.

"It is hard, especially at home. The whole week is full on and I'm pretty flat right now."

  10. 'It feels kind of easy'published at 06:59 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

Some more quotes from race winner Valtteri Bottas, who says: "It is not just the breakfast, it is all the past years, the work in the winter, the work I've done inside here [his head].

"I truly enjoyed it and it would not be possible without the amazing car. In the beginning it was about managing the race and I saw after five, six seven laps I was starting to build the lead. I knew I could do it, I have done it before. When you are really on it it feels kind of easy."

  11. 'The most dominant race'published at 06:55 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff tells BBC Radio 5 Live: "Valtteri deserved to win the race and controlled it.

"I'm very impressed. He was written off at the end of last season and now he has had the most dominant race."

On Bottas going for, and getting the point for the fastest lap, Wolff added: "We didn't want him to do it, but there was no stopping him."

  12. champagne moment

Champagne momentpublished at 06:52 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

Valtteri has a moment with that bottle of champagne. He closes his eyes and sips it, and it looks super sweet and well deserved. He says today is his "best performance yet".

The Prince of Positivity: Bottas is an easy driver of the day lol. Still in shock about Ferrari. But as a racing point fan Lance stroll finishing 9th was a great start especially after his poor qualifying
