Image source, EPALewis Hamilton held off Max Verstappen, and survived a late collision with the Red Bull driver, to win a nail-biting Monaco Grand Prix.
The world champion was left struggling with the tyres on his Mercedes after fitting softer rubber than the Dutchman at pit stops during an early safety-car period. Britain's Hamilton repeatedly complained that he was not going to be able to make the tyres last to the end but by careful management held on to take his fourth win of 2019.
Verstappen dropped from second on the road to fourth in the results because of a five-second penalty, promoting Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel to second and Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas to third.
Verstappen's punishment was for an unsafe release in the pits when all the leaders pitted on lap 12 as a safety car was deployed to clear up debris laid by Charles Leclerc's Ferrari. Although Mercedes' run of consecutive victories at the start of this season continued, their sequence of one-twos is over as a result of Bottas' bad luck.
And Hamilton now holds a 17-point lead over his team-mate in the championship.
As you may have noticed from some of the pictures today, Max is starting to grow a beard...

Image source, .Toto Wolff, Mercedes' team boss, with his shirt drenched in champagne, says: "It means a lot and it couldn't have been a more dramatic race after the incidents of last week and it was a world championship driver for a world champion that isn't with us any more."
On Hamilton's radio exchanges: "I think if you accept that the driver needs to have a pressure release, and talking to us is that valve - even if it's vomiting the anger out we need to support him. The tyre choice was the wrong one but we rarely make mistakes like this and the driver made the difference in the race."
On Max Verstappen's penalty: "I don't know, he pushed him in the wall, I think the stewards need to decide whether it's five or ten seconds these things happen and I'm fine with that.
"We just need to do as good a job as possible. This one was hard one for a victory and now we have a couple of days which will be difficult with Niki's funeral in Vienna and then we set the sails for Canada."

F1 world champion and former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg, discusses Verstappen's performance: "Max is so brilliant and so fast and is one of the best out there - maybe him and Lewis out there at the moment. Pierre Gasly should be closer, but he's just too far away.
"We all love watching Max drive because he's always going to give it a go. That’s why Lewis was so nervous, specifically because it’s Max your stress levels are high."

Lewis Hamilton, on reflection of his Monaco victory, says: "I don’t know how satisfied I am, it was so intense - maybe the most intense I've ever had. I'm not mad about it - that’s how racing should be, but it's difficult when you're out there for so long on your own there is nothing Bono or anyone can say to make it better - it's all down to me.
"The pressure felt immense and there was every opportunity to crack today under that pressure - I was determined not to crack. If you crack in your mind you're done so on the positive side, I'm mentally strong.
"Max put on a great race, I nearly crashed like 30 times so I'm grateful I didn’t, but I did touch the wall a couple of times."
Six races gone and Lewis Hamilton's lead is at the 17-point mark.

Vaishach: Taking nothing away from Lewis but Mercedes are really lucky. Ferrari made a gamble yesterday - hurt them badly. Red Bull made an error- Hurt them badly. Mercedes made a strategy error - Got away with it.
Lady T: Still picking my nails off the floor. For me, Driver of the day is BOTH Lewis & Max for keeping the usual Yawnaco race alive and me at the edge of my seat. How Hamilton managed to win with those tyres is beyond me, but he did it for Niki. He is smiling. Miracles do happen.
Jimmy O'Shea: going for a poll, attacking, defending or looking after ruined tyres... Lewis Hamilton can do it all. Masterful drive. The team are used to him worrying over the radio. They would be more worried if he stopped doing it.

Lewis Hamilton's win was his third in Monaco (after victories in 2016 and 2008). That takes him level on three wins with Nico Rosberg (2015, 2014 and 2013), Sir Jackie Stewart (1973, 1971 - pictured - and 1966) and Sterling Moss (1961, 1960 and 1956).
Ayrton Senna is the record Monaco winner with six successes (1993, 1992, 1991, 1990, 1989 and 1987).

"I knew he had softer tyres he was taking it easy after the pitstop so I was pushing him and started attacking him all the time, but out of the tunnel you can’t get close enough so I tried to put the pressure on.
"In the whole race I was following closely in the dirty air is not easy. I had a fun race and would've liked to have a podium."
Hamilton's race win stands as there will be no action taken on his late bump with Max Verstappen. Hamilton has won 77 races now!
