Engine power was what won Ferrari pole - that, and a great lap from Sebastian Vettel. And even the Mercedes upgraded engine could not bridge the straight-line gap to the slippery Ferrari and its powerful motor. The gap will likely be reduced in the race but Mercedes go into it with nerves as a result of the failure in the new, upgraded engine in Lance Stroll’s Racing Point in final practice.
"We need to understand what it was,” said Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff, “which we don't at the moment. Question marks remain over what happened. But overall I'm happy we introduced a fresh engine, and just take it from there - learn from every mile we are able to run these engines. Learn and optimise them.”
He said the failure would have no impact on how Mercedes use the engine in the race.
"It came as a surprise to us,” Wolff said. “But we have been running those engines on the dynos and still believe that what we have seen on the dyno counts. You can't turn them down or run them differently because of a failure that is very difficult to judge. So no change from the way we run the engine.”

Fastest race strategy? Quelle surprise, it’s a one-stop, starting on the medium, running for at least 35 laps and then changing to the hard. For those with a tyre choice, the medium is the better starting tyre.
The one stop with the soft as the starting tyre requires a change after just five to eight laps, and then on to a hard. But getting to the end after an early stop will be marginal. Two-stop is slower and has the added problem of needing to pass people. Safety car probability is high - at 69% - and pit-lane time loss for a stop is about 17 seconds.

Cameron F1 UK: So many memorable moments at Canada over the years, especially Jenson Button in 2011 which stands out to me the most. Could we see another memorable moment today at Canada, especially from Leclerc, Hamilton, Vettel or someone else perhaps?
Lady T: Fingers crossed Hamilton's car is ok for race. Probably gonna mean he can't push too hard or won't start from grid. Engineers please do all u can to fix car in time. Vettel has fresh tyres, Hamilton used so he probably won't have good grip.

One of the more bizarre moments came in the 2016 race when leader Sebastian Vettel had to lock up because of some suicidal seagulls.
After the race, which he went on to finish second in behind Lewis Hamilton, the German said: "Two seagulls – you see! I had my eyes so deep into the apex, I locked up. Mind the animals!
"Can you see they stayed there? That's what really annoyed me. I was doing a hundred and something, and they stay there!"
