Sebastian Vettel lost victory in the Canadian Grand Prix to Lewis Hamilton after being penalised for dangerous driving against his rival.

The Ferrari driver made a mistake under pressure from the world champion, running wide at Turn Three, and pushed Hamilton wide as he rejoined the track.

Race stewards decided Vettel had rejoined the track unsafely and penalised him five seconds for forcing Hamilton off the track. The Mercedes driver would likely have passed Vettel had he not been blocked with 22 laps still remaining.

The move will doubtless lead to a major controversy but Hamilton was clear that he felt Vettel had been unfair. He said over the radio immediately after the incident: "He's just come back on the track so dangerously."

  6. 'If you said that before the weekend I would have kissed you'published at 22:09 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

Daniel Ricciardo had a great weekend starting P4 and finishing P6. Speaking to Johnny Herbert on Sky Sports, he says: "A weekend as a whole as pretty awesome. If you said that before the weekend I would have kissed you! First double points for the team that's been a long time coming and Nico had a strong pace too.

"I tried to keep Valtteri behind for as long as I could I think we kept him behind for as a long as we could but I probably killed my tyres doing so.

"It was certainly hot it was similar conditions here in 2017 and I learned from that, and keep hydrated which made me feel better today.

"We have some new parts coming the encouraging thing was a few elbows out with Bottas and he didn’t ease by me with DRS so there's a lot of positives to take, and for the Renault fans we can pull off another good one."

    Sport.

At it's brilliant best when we all have different opinions. Having an opinion and sticking to it does not equal bias in one way or the other.

It would have been better for the championship if Vettel had won. He didn't.

  9. 'We won today'published at 21:51 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

Mattia Binotto, Ferrari's team principal says: "It's not for us to decide and that's the sport - everyone seems to believe that Sebastian won.

"He didn't have any bad intentions there, he stayed ahead the entire race he took the chequered flag for us. He is the winner and as a team we pulled back the competitiveness. and we know our weaknesses - the season is not over.

"You cannot take it further, I think we need to look at all the data ourselves to make our own decision. He was driving at the limit in each corner, and we are on the border line of the tyres when he was coming back on the track he went on the grass and there was nothing he could do.

"Everyone will calm down in a few hours and we need to look at the weaknesses and try and improve the car - that is our task and our job. We won today. Honestly as I said, we were the fastest on track and that is important. Even now I think at the press conference Seb is very calm.

"It's a good sign to see the passion he is hungry he has proved to be hungry, we are all hungry and that's what will help us in future races."

  10. 'You have to take these days also'published at 21:49 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

More from Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. He says: "I think a win is a win and you need to take the points you would rather do it clean on track but you have to take these days also.

"I think the stewards will always polarise the race, they penalised it, sometimes it looks lenient, sometimes it looks hard but you need to take it even if it goes against you."

Hamilton wins because of Vettel penalty

Jonathan Wood: When the dust settles, it’s another Vettel mistake. If he doesn’t go off then he deservedly wins the race after a superb drive. Will be interesting to see how the Italian press read it tomorrow........

Kris Jefferson: I don’t understand how anyone can defend Vettel, by the letter of the law you cannot affect another car when rejoining the racetrack, something Vettel very obviously did. The argument he had ‘nowhere to go’ doesn’t matter, his initial mistake led him to cut Hamilton off

Tony Adamson: Let people race. There was never danger. You are driving fans away from the sport

Ryan Owens: Yes Seb made a mistake, but the fact the car was sliding shows that with slick tyres on the downhill grass if Vettel had hit the brakes he definitely would've taken Lewis out going across the track with no control. Vettel could've done nothing more.

  19. 'The team definitely deserved a victory today'published at 21:33 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

Over in the other side of the Ferrari garage, Charles Leclerc, who came third, says: "It was close, I'm pretty happy with the performance, we were very quick a bit of a shame I made some mistakes in qualifying, and I need to get better but the race pace was very good.

"The team definitely deserved a victory today so it's a shame but we will come back stronger and hopefully the win will come."
