  1. Memorable Montreal moments - 2005 - leader Montoya disqualifiedpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

It was a crazy race in 2005 as Giancarlo Fisichella, Fernando Alonso and Juan Pablo Montoya all had and lost the lead, with Montoya even being disqualified for exiting the pits when a red light was showing.

After all that chaos, that left Kimi Raikkonen, who had qualified seventh, to collect his fifth win and his first and only success in Canada.

Star of qualifying? Well, Sebastian Vettel’s pole lap was pretty special, but it has to be Daniel Ricciardo, who put the steadily improving Renault fourth. OK, he had a bit of help from his former Red Bull team, who got caught out by Kevin Magnussen’s crash after a failed attempt to make it through to Q3 on medium tyres and Max Verstappen got knocked out. And from Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas, both of whom were poor in final qualifying. Pierre Gasly did not exactly excel either. But it’s still a great achievement. "I did what I needed to do, and it was fun,” he said, “a few close encounters with a few walls! The first couple of corners, throw them away, and the rest of the lap was strong.

"Street circuits, they tempt you to be a little bit crazy, and they tempt you to drive outside your limits.”

But Max Verstappen's qualifying problem was good news for his former team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, with the Renault man enjoying one of his best days of the season so far by getting up to fourth.

We have not seen too many Ricciardo smiles this season, but he was a happy man yesterday.

"This is what 4th in qualifying looks like," he wrote on Instagram.

  7. 'Not ideal'published at 18:01 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

Saturday had been a really good one for McLaren with Lando Norris qualifying eighth and Carlos Sainz ninth, but the Spaniard was another one to be penalised, given a three-place penalty for blocking off Alexander Albon in qualifying.

That crash from Magnussen meant Max Verstappen failed to get into the top 10 of qualifying. Red Bull had sent him out on the mediums in a tactical gamble but it did not work and he was on a flyer on the softs when Magnussen's crash stopped the session.

But the accident meant 10th place was out of the window. Now it's a pitlane start instead.

    This was how they qualified...

    QaulifyingImage source, .

...but it won't be where they all start. Kevin Magnussen drops to the back and will start from the pits after mangling his car in the second part of qualifying and Carlos Sainz has a three-place grid penalty to deal with after blocking off Alexander Albon in qualifying.

So that's at least ninth for Max Verstappen, who could not get a second run in Q2 because of that Magnussen crash.

As soon as we get a confirmed starting grid we'll throw it in this page.

  18. Vettel beats Hamilton to Canada pole positionpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    vettelImage source, Rex Features

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel beat Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes to pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix.

It was only the second time in seven races Mercedes have been beaten to pole - the other by Vettel's team-mate Charles Leclerc in Bahrain in March. Vettel was 0.206 seconds quicker than Hamilton, with Leclerc 0.680secs off.

Daniel Ricciardo was a surprise fourth for Renault after Red Bull's Max Verstappen was caught out by a crash by Kevin Magnussen in the second session.

Hamilton had been quickest on the first runs in the top 10 shoot-out, by nearly 0.2secs from Vettel, but the German four-time champion pulled out a special lap on his final run.

Vettel whooped with delight over the radio as he took his first pole position since last year's German Grand Prix in July.

Leclerc, who had been swapping fastest times with Vettel for much of the weekend and in the first two parts of qualifying, said he struggled with the car when it mattered and did not have an explanation. Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas will start sixth after a spin on his first lap and then a scrappy lap on his second attempt.
