A close qualifying saw Mercedes take another front row lock-out, their seventh this year, while Ferrari ran out of oomph after their impressive turn of pace in final practice.

Meanwhile, as Valtteri rides off to catch the last few kms of the Tour de France, there is a Team Ineos bike quite literally in half after a crash involving Geraint Thomas.

The season finale begins today with a race tonight, and the final one one tomorrow around the streets of New York.

This year, of Bottas' four poles, he's only converted one of those to a win - in Baku.

Lewis Hamilton has taken that advantage off him twice, in China and Spain.

While some people get on early morning coaches from places like Milton Keynes, Northampton or Towcester to get to Silverstone, the more adventurous are camping on one of the sites near the circuit for the ultimate F1 experience.

Rows and rows of tents as far as the eye can see greet you, each with a variety of flags attached so you can find your way back to your tent or caravan after a hard day of watching racing cars, or being at the bar, or both.

The smell of hundreds of barbecues fills the air, and then the chiming of the ice cream van, making practically tent-to-tent stops, is added to the cacophony of sound.

You’re not short of things to do either here. There is an F1 sim racer if you want to pretend you’re a racing driver, mini go karts for those who might want to become one, live music, numerous food stalls, a bar and all sorts of shops in case you want a huge flag to wave at the circuit or have just forgotten some homely essentials.

Sebastian Vettel who starts behind the Red Bulls tomorrow in sixth, says in a tongue-in-cheek tone: "I’ve had worse ones at least I took part."

"I don’t know, I didn’t have the speed. I guess its pretty clear you go faster from Q1 to Q3 without doing anything but we didn’t do that today. I didn’t have a good feeling for the car. I think he [Charles Leclerc] did a good job.

"For me I don’t have an answer now it’s fairly evenly spread. I didn’t have a great feeling this afternoon and part of it you need a great feeling to throw the car from one side of the other.

"The race is never a problem, I would rather start further up in the race - normally it’s fine – Mercs will be quick but race pace will be fine I think – it will be a tough battle between us and the Red Bulls. One will be boring…" He pauses. "Depends, he’s calmed down a bit."

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says: "It's good, it came a little bit as a surprise because we were on the back foot and expected Ferrari to be strong, but they went backwards and we went forwards.

"Valtteri just had a fantastic day. I think the grip went up and the whole car heated up and the whole thing came towards us." He clarifies: "Heating up cars in the right place is good."

Formula E truly has it all: crashes, pile-ups, bumper-to-bumper racing, narrow twisty circuits and multiple winners - and that's just in one season that isn't even over yet.

In its five-year existence, it has created its own niche as an environmentally friendly racing series, allowing manufacturers to test and develop new technology for the electric car market.

But it is the racing that appears to be effecting change within motorsport.

While Formula 1 - in its 70th year - battles criticism over the sport being too predictable, with controversial penalties dictating race results and a shortage of close racing, the Formula E season has been packed with thrilling races.

The stage could not be more grand for the season finale, but just what is it that makes Formula E so electrifying?

The title race comes to a head this weekend with a double-header in New York City, where Jean-Eric Vergne will hope to convert his commanding 32-point lead at the top of the drivers' standings into his second successive title.

Pierre Gasly, says: "I'm really excited it was important to get a good quali. Friday was good and practice was good.

We still need to work - it's not perfect but there's a lot of positives. We did a lot of changes since the last race and a lot of them are going into the right direction - still it's not perfect but this weekend is a good step forward."

While his team boss Christian Horner says: "A great performance from both drivers today. Im really pleased for Pierre to get a strong quali.

"I think maybe [Ferrari] are going for the start [with the soft tyre choice]. There's the start line advantage on the red, but the durability isn't great - it's different but it will spice things up tomorrow.

"I looks like a two-stopper form Ferrari, and it's not necessarily slower because eit depends on the degradation."

Lando Norris, talking to Sky, said: "Was good. Could have been better - it was only four hundredths difference. The wind was gusty and not so easy.

"Big improvements we've got to make - but the car's nice to drive and we have confidence in the high speed [corners]. But feeling nice and comfortable is not always the quickest way of driving."

Compared to Ferrari's 15 pole positions at a British Grand Prix. That's a good track record for Ferrari since they have 17 wins to Mercedes' six.

Mattia Binotto, Ferrari's team principal says: "We're suffering with the balance on the car and the tyres - the situation is difficult. We worked hard overnight in simulators and it was better today.

"It's not the front row but it's very close. I think he [Charles Leclerc] did a fantastic lap with nothing more left but when the gap is so close at the end everything is possible.

"Sebastian was a bit less comfortable and something we need to analyse. He wasn't as good as Charles today and that's something we have to look at.

Max Verstappen starts P4 tomorrow. He wants to spoil the Mercedes party: "I was just not happy with the balance initially.

"In qualifying we made some final changes which made me feel better in the car and we made a jump forward so to be so close to pole is not bad for us around here. It's not bad, tomorrow it will be fixed and normally we are a bit better in the race."

It's Valtteri Bottas' first pole here, and he's only one short from the most successful Finnish driver.

Mika Hakkinen has two.

Charles Leclerc doesn't have much to say, but he does start P3 tomorrow says: "In Q2 I think we were quite good. In Q3 they [Mercedes] were quick and on the corners we know we need to work on it - but we did the best we could do today and I'm very happy about it."

It's Valtteri Bottas' first Silverstone, and 10th career pole.

It takes a lot for there to be any excitement in the media centre but seeing that Valtteri Bottas has clinched pole by only 0.006 seconds got a huge oooooooohhhhhhhh by the men and women of the world’s media.

He’s in the best place to be tomorrow afternoon.
