Red Bull's Max Verstappen took his second win of the year in a chaotic and incident-strewn German Grand Prix held in intermittent rain.

The Dutchman led a topsy-turvy result in which Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel took second from last on the grid and Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat was third. Lewis Hamilton had a day to forget, finishing 11th after two mistakes.

But the Briton did not lose any ground to team-mate Valtteri Bottas in the championship after the Finn crashed.

It was a dismal way for Mercedes to end a weekend when the team celebrated 125 years in motorsport and their 200th Formula 1 race.

But the Mercedes drivers were not the only ones to fall foul of the treacherous conditions in a race that featured a remarkable six safety cars - two of them virtual - and the winner made five pit stops to change back and forth between wet and dry tyres.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc crashed when looking in strong shape for at least second place. Renault's Nico Hulkenberg went off at the same place, the treacherous penultimate corner, which was also where Hamilton made one of his errors.

Kuntal Majumdar: @MercedesAMGF1 strategists took a break today. Which is great for the sport.

Whether Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi keep their seventh and eighth-placed finishes will be heard at the stewards at 18:45 BST.

A severe penalty could see Lewis Hamilton claim two points and be moved up to ninth, while Robert Kubica could move from 12th into a first point of the season for Williams in 10th.

  8. 'I was in the lead and finished pretty much last'published at 18:06 British Summer Time 28 July 2019

Some quotes from Lewis Hamilton, who comes 11th, in front of the two Williams cars, after starting from pole in a weekend where he has struggled with his health.

He says: “It’s definitely been one of the worst weekends I can remember having but these weekend are sent to try you. What I can say is health is everything, this weekend I could feel for all the people who are sickly in hospitals, who are going through difficult times. I felt even more for them this weekend knowing how horrible it does feel being ill.

"My illness is minuscule compared to a lot of people but it felt like the world was ending for me a lot of times, it was really hard to perform. I really thought today was going to be tough especially when it was wet, I did pretty well until the first stop and then it was a cascade. I wasn’t sure it was slicks anyway, they put them on, then I went off, then they didn’t have them ready, it just went on and on and on.

“I don’t really care where everyone else finished. I was in the lead and I finished pretty much last. That’s definitely very painful. I went form third to 11th, but it is what it is. Really happy for Seb coming all the way back up and torpedo, what is his name, Kvyat, the torpedo, so good to see him getting on the podium, that’s awesome for him, especially when Red Bull dropped him, they’ve given others more breathing space, good for him.”

  13. 'A very mature drive from Daniil'published at 17:32 British Summer Time 28 July 2019

More from Red Bull boss Christian Horner:

"Pierre (Gasly) got stuck, we had a problem in the first stop which put him at the back, he did one less stop than Max (Verstappen), got ahead of (Sebastian) Vettel and then went wide again. Coming back through the field he tripped up again with Alex (Albon) - I haven’t seen it properly but it looks like a racing incident.

"Daniil (Kvyat) has kept his head down and he’s put the work in to get back in the program, and he’s now had a child and it’s a very mature drive for him.

"We’re at the half way point of the year and we’ve won two races and a few podiums and a couple of should-have-beens.

"Hopefully we can sign-off [the first half of the season] with a good result next week in Budapest. Hungary is a different challenge again, but we’ve seen tyres playing such a key role."

  15. 'Cannot get much worse'published at 17:25 British Summer Time 28 July 2019

Some more quotes from Mercedes top man Toto Wolff.

When asked about what happened to Valtteri Bottas, he shrugs his shoulders in the way that some managers might do when things have quickly billowed out of control beyond what anyone could have predicted.

He continues: "Many others made the mistake and crashed, and overall it was a bad day and it cannot get much worse.

"It shows that you shouldn’t fool around with stuff - you should concentrate on the job, we are not superstitious, but we should focus on the job at hand."

  16. 'Tricky conditions and wrong calls'published at 17:22 British Summer Time 28 July 2019

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, is not a happy bunny.

He says: "It doesn’t make it any easier if you have a day like this.

"We had a decent start with good pace but then obviously we had incidents and tricky conditions and the wrong calls and that where it all started to go wrong.

"It was unfortunate because crashing right at the entry of the pitlane you are not prepared and then we made the wrong calls afterwards."

  19. 'We just had to keep our heads and it was incredible'published at 17:13 British Summer Time 28 July 2019

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner takes us through that chaotic race. He tells Sky Sports: "It’s a lottery and Max kept his head, it was a maximum of nine pitstops for some drivers and five for Max. We put the yellow tyre on thinking we might need that to get to the end of the race we just had to keep our heads and it was incredible.

"[Max's] restarts were unbelievable. We were just trying to make sure we kept the right tyre at the right time and in those conditions there's no point in looking at the radar as it's different in every corner so you just need the right tyre at the right time.

"Those kind of races he really excels at and he got to the front and was fighting Valtteri he was pushing the tyres harder, but he was still able to push, push, push and once he got clean air he got away."
