    Lap 4/44

Safety car has been redeployed because of Carlos Sainz pulling out at the bus stop.

  3. Sainz outpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 1 September 2019

    Lap 4/44

We said Sainz probably won't finish this race. But I didn't expect him to have another problem straight away. Three times he has a problem in three laps. On the third strike he is out. Two men out of the race after only four laps.

The safety car was going to be coming in, but now after that Sainz problem, it's still out there.

Carlos Sainz is "celebrating" his 25th birthday today. He'll have a long time to eat his birthday cake and ponder what went wrong.

For Lando Norris, he made a good dive on the inside of Kevin Magnussen and all the chaos happened on the outside and Norris just nipped through the inside.

Sainz stalled on the start and went into the pits, and promptly stalled for a second time. You wouldn't expect him to finish this one. Raikkonen has already been in the pits twice, we're only on lap three!

Behind the safety car at the moment. The top four are as they started, Lando Norris has jumped up from 11th to fifth, Romain Grosjean up from ninth to sixth.

It's 2016, Raikkonen coming across and Max Verstappen was entitled to that space there.

Raikkonen was aiming towards the apex, but he had Max Verstappen there.

Daniel Ricciardo has picked up some damage too. A hugely eventful start. Verstappen out, damage for Raikkonen and Ricciardo.

Verstappen is in the wall, he's out of the grand prix. He removes his steering wheel.

And the traffic out of here might not be so bad now.

Kimi Raikkonen has been hit, I think by Max Verstappen who has crashed.

Much to the disappointment of thousands and thousands of orange-clad Dutch fans, Max Verstappen's race is done on the first lap.

Verstappen and Raikkonen banged, Verstappen had tried to move in on the inside, Raikkonnen is there and the Dutchman had nowhere to go and he is out.

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at Spa-Francorchamps

As ever these days, this looks like a one-stop race, with the most likely strategy a stint on the soft tyres and then one on the medium. The soft tyre is predicted to run for up to 30 laps, the medium for 35 or so, so a one-stop is eminently do-able. And because the two tyres are so similar in terms of pace and durability, the pit window will open from as early as lap 10. Oh, and this is Spa, so there’s the threat of weather. It rained overnight and Spa was damp this morning.

There have been spits of rain off and on ever since - and then it rained properly for a while with with just under two hours until start time. The forecast has been getting worse through the day and there is now a strong chance of a rain-affected race. A pit stop costs 18 seconds in green flag conditions, about half that under a safety car, of which there is a 60% probability historically.
