Alfa Romeo. The road cars were known for their beauty over the years, um... if not their reliability.

Less so in F1 today, though, as Raikkonen and Giovinazzi can atest - at least when the drivers are not throwing it off the track.

And when they competed during the fifties, winning titles for Farina and Fangio.

Less at it during the eighties, but the car looked awesome (bottom) in the old Alfa Romeo factory in Milan the other day.

A moody Sebastian Vettel, who missed out on setting a final lap time, says: "I was trying to get through but people were... there was a McLaren and a Renault blocking the road." On the reply it shows Vettel waving his hands out of the cockpit to move out of the way.

"We didn't make it to get the second attempt like many others. I was the one out front alone in the first run and I shouldn't have been the one in the second run. The session was over so I couldn't even make it to start the lap so I can't be happy with that. Not what we intended to do.

"There was no point for Charles to overtake me at that point, he should have been ahead the whole way, the car was very good I had a good lap I just didn't have a tow and that's the difference between pole and no pole today."

  3. 'The only guy who got it right was Sainz'published at 15:33 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

Lance Stroll who qualified in ninth, tries to explain what happened after the restart in Q3: "I was towards the front, then Nico [Hulkenberg] was playing games trying to get me out front, and then afterwards other cars started over taking me and it just became a mess.

"It was just a matter of time before the session was going to be over. I don't really have a better explanation of that - it was a bad calculation. The only guy who got it right was Sainz."

  4. 'And then everyone looks like idiots'published at 15:29 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

Toto Wolff, Mercedes' team boss has been speaking to Sky Sports' Simon Lazenby. He says: "You have been around for 35 years, have you ever seen anything this? That was worse than a junior formula.

"The problem was everyone wants a slipstream and nobody wants to go first.... and then everyone looks like idiots."

  6. 'We have to be grateful to be on front row'published at 15:23 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

Lewis Hamilton on an eventful qualifying session: "Honestly I have to be grateful to be on front.

"I get to have a fight with Ferrari tomorrow.

"As a team it's a great position to be in.

    "Crazy with timing system.

"Everyone backs us up to get a position and they just time us out.

"So just get pole in Q2 then time us out.

"For us we're down on Ferrari on a straight line, so we need it.

"But just to be up here on front row, we can give them a fight tomorrow."

Valtteri Bottas, who starts P3 says: "Yeah I was quite unlucky there and at the yellow flag in the last run I had to lift off so I missed pole due to that and the last run was a mess for everyone, but we're still at the front so that's what counts.

"It's always good fun here and for sure I will enjoy tomorrow."

The tifosi go wild in the grandstands behind pole sitter Charles Leclerc.

He says: "It feels unbelievable. Wednesday in Milan was incredible and to see so many people is amazing. I'm happy with pole but it's a shame at the end it was a big mess and I hoped our last lap was enough.

"The pace was quite good actually during the race simulations, better than in Spa."

They have all left it too late.

I said there might be a couple of people missing.

I didn't think they would all miss out.

Claire did find Max Verstappen though. He says: "I just hope that it's going to become wet. That gives us a few more chances to go forward. In the dry I will still move forward but it will be harder because the lap times are close. FP3 was competitive and I think we have a competitive race car so we'll see what we can do."

Bottas has not backed off for that yellow flag.

You can't be driving flat out on a yellow.
