Just the four men to have won a race so far this season. No Sebastian Vettel on this graphic. Will that change in a couple of hours?

David Worthington: With six races to go can Charles Leclerc catch Lewis, in the drivers championship?

We did a few calculations during qualifying yesterday David, and here's what we came up with...

Hamilton is on 284 points, Leclerc is fourth on 182 points. So that's 102 points difference, there are seven races left and a maximum of 26 for one man at each race.

That means Leclerc could still net another 182 points, by winning each race and claiming the fastest lap at each one. Obviously it would need Hamilton to have a few pointless races.

Renault were satisfied to get both cars into the top 10, on a track that, on the evidence of the season so far, should not have been that good for them. But that evaporated when Daniel Ricciardo’s car, the faster Renault all Saturday, was disqualified for exceeding the 120kW power limit from the MGU-K, the part of the hybrid system that recovers energy from the rear axle and through which all electrical power output flows.

The team’s defence rested on the fact that the excess was very small and offered no measurable benefit; and that the excess occurred during the second fastest lap during the first session. But the stewards cited the rule that says it is no defence that no performance advantage was gained. Renault said the advantage was “measured at one-microsecond due to a kerb hit that caused his MGU-K to over-rev on his slowest lap of Q1”. He starts from the back.

Lando Norris really should have qualified best of the rest, after a stonker of a lap in second qualifying put him 0.6secs up on McLaren team-mate Carlos Sainz. But Norris could not repeat it when it mattered and ended up three places behind the Spaniard - which became two when Daniel Ricciardo’s Renault was disqualified for a technical infringement.

“Just silly mistakes really.” Norris said. “Until halfway I was pretty even with my Q2 lap. then I made one big mistake, did the wrong gear in the hairpin, didn’t downshift as many as I should have done, then I had a bad exit, wheelspin, too much temperature in the rears and then it just spiralled.”

Mike Kaiser: I will go out on a limb and say Alex Albon because someone up front will do something stupid and cause a wreck.

IPKW: Well, Lewis Hamilton can drive better under pressure. Can the other two though? let see who blinks first eh!

Matwi: Ferrari engineers finally have it right with the cars and upto the drivers, but don’t imagine L, externalewis Hamilton will allow another loss. Best wishes, it will be epic!

Max Verstappen has been at a bit of a loss to explain why Red Bull have under-performed against their own expectations. “Of course disappointed,” he said. “At the moment I don’t have a clear answer on why. But I think already the whole week, yesterday it felt all right but not amazing. Some corners we were lacking and we couldn’t explain why and today we couldn’t make the gains we wanted to compared to Mercedes and Ferrari and that hurt us in qualifying.

"The balance was all right but just not enough grip in some corners, I guess.” One clear issue with the Red Bull was that it was very obviously not handling the bumps as well as well as the Ferrari and Mercedes - it was bouncing rather than gliding.

  15. 'Always fun around here'published at 12:34 British Summer Time 22 September 2019

    Andrew Benson

    Sebastian VettelImage source, Getty Images

Sebastian Vettel was clearly crestfallen to be down in third, after setting the pace on the first runs in final qualifying, his disappointment heightened by being beaten by his team-mate for the eighth time in a row, and knowing he needed a good weekend to give himself a boost after a difficult run.

“The final attempt should have been better,” he said. “Overall, the car was making sense, I was feeling good and I was able to improve run by run, so maybe I peaked a bit too early. I think the track was probably a bit faster at the end.” Vettel it seems reached his limit on that first run, as the second was hampered by mistakes.

“It started off very good and then, the last run, already in sector one, lost a little bit and was playing catch-up, and trying to take more and more risks throughout the lap which didn’t pay off. So no point finishing the lap because I was already quite a bit behind. I think the car was good today and pole was up for grabs but it puts us in a good position.”

As for the race, Vettel said: “It should be a good race, so let’s see what the tyres will do, if we are able to push the full two hours, or if we have to manage, but one way or another it’s always fun around here.”

  18. Hamilton's surprisepublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 22 September 2019

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Singapore

Lewis Hamilton was as surprised as anyone at Ferrari’s pace on Saturday. “We obviously came into the weekend knowing we would have a fight with the Red Bulls,” he said, “and it’s just knowing how the Ferraris have been in other places with high downforce, they’ve not been so strong – Budapest for example – and all of a sudden they’ve brought an upgrade here and it seems to have worked.

"Of course we were not expecting to have such a strong performance from them and to have that deficit to them. I like how close it was between us all and hopefully that puts us in good stead for more good fights.” On race pace on Friday, though, Hamilton was miles ahead of anyone, but then Ferrari had not by that point got their car in good shape.

  20. Bath timepublished at 12:29 British Summer Time 22 September 2019

Yes, that's right a bath before the race. The drivers must bring their core temperatures down before it's time to get in the car as the heat and humidity temperatures soar in Singapore.

Especially in warm cockpit, under layers of fireproof clothing.
