"Huge performance from Vettel, two brilliant laps. The pressure was on and he dealt with it perfectly," says Jolyon Palmer.

"Yes guys," says Vettel before reeling off some Italian. "Thanks boys and thanks girls," is as good as you'll get from me translating Italian.

Bethonie Waring: I wonder, did Vettel say this *after* he knew he was on provisional pole. It would look pretty bad if the team came back like "yep, P3 Seb"

Clear team pattern with Ferrari one and two, Mercedes three and four, Red Bull five and six, McLaren seven and eight. No time from Grosjean, who may well be settling for 10th.

    Five minutes of qualifying left.

Sebastian Vettel jumps to the top, Charles Leclerc second. After attempt one, we've got a Ferrari front row. Seven minutes to go. Vettel three tenths better off than Leclerc.

"That was a good lap, a good lap," says Vettel.

"Yep, well done," Ferrari tell him.

But will it be good enough? It's not all done with just yet.

Francesca Gunn: Just realising I should have gone bed early then woken up at 2am and now having to try and stay awake for pretty much 24 hrs.

Jack: Sector 1 at Suzuka has to be the best stretch of circuit anywhere on the calendar. Really shows off just how incredible these machines are.

Francesca, I can feel your pain, although I couldn't wake up at 2am.
