  4. Is today the day?published at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2019

Will this be the day that Lewis Hamilton becomes a six-time world champion? The odds are stacked heavily in his favour. Essentially, as long as the Mercedes driver does not retire, he should secure this year’s title by 16:00 local time (22:00 BST) because an eighth place is all he needs even if team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who starts from pole, wins.

Hamilton is such a competitive animal that he was curt and grumpy on Saturday evening, after mistakes on both his qualifying laps left him fifth on the grid on one of his favourite circuits. But Hamilton being Hamilton, all he was thinking about was how to win the race. “I am trying to figure out what went wrong and how I can get myself to the front tomorrow,” he said. “It is going to be a tough challenge trying to get past two Ferraris and a Red Bull and Valtteri.

“I don’t look at this race as a particularly important race. It’s as important as any other race to me. It is not a stand-out, individual, important race for me. There are still two more after that. I will approach it exactly the same. I’m not looking to perform miracles. Things happen for a reason and today is a lesson learnt. Try to see if I can turn a negative into a positive.”

  7. What happened in qualifying yesterday?published at 17:37 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2019

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas took pole position for the United States Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton only fifth as he stands poised to seal the title.

Bottas headed Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull's Max Verstappen, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Hamilton in a very closely contested session. Bottas was 0.012secs ahead of Vettel as 0.108secs covered the top four.

Bottas ends a run of six consecutive pole positions by Ferrari stretching back to the Belgian GP in August.

The end of qualifying was an anti-climax as only Verstappen of the top five was able to improve the lap time set on their first runs and Hamilton even aborted his lap.

Hamilton has picked up points at every race this season, with him coming outside the top eight only once - in the rain chaos at Germany - when he ended up ninth.
