Peter: Re: Jago, 11:31. The answer is quite a bit! The old under/oversteer preference has been around forever and it's almost inevitable that you will get teams with two drivers who want one or the other. The set-up to achieve either can be very different.

Andrew Connolly: If Red Bull want to offload Gasly and maybe Albon because they’ll never get back in the Red Bull, surely it’s best to put them on show in the Alpha Tauri for the other teams to view?

Not often we see Lewis Hamilton going through the gravel, but that's what has happened here. The track is proving a good challenge for all of them, just as it should be.

Whatever they are doing at Mercedes, it's working. Back to a one-two as Valtteri Bottas, on the softs, nudges ahead of Lewis Hamilton thanks to a 1:16.654. Just the 0.026 seconds separates the top two.

Meanwhile, Alexander Albon has a lap time wiped out. Out of four attempts, he's had two times deleted for exceeding track limits. On one of his two legal efforts, he's got himself fifth.

Can Max Verstappen bundle his way on to the front row later on? He's looking fast today after escaping a penalty yesterday for bashing into Lance Stroll.

Verstappen is second, 0.132 slower than Hamilton, although the Mercedes man is on the softs with the Dutchman on the mediums.

Quicksloth: Why is everyone writing off Alonso? He's been out of the sport, but he spent that time racing in various other high level motorsports (WEC, Dakar, Indy) with very little time between them to adapt and was impressive. OK, he'll be 40, but Hamilton is just five years younger.

Jago: RE the Verstappen/Albon car preference divide - how far apart in spec/set up can two cars in the same team be?

Max Verstappen's time is the quickest of the day, but not for long as he's exceeded track limits (as everyone has done this weekend) and that time is wiped from the books.

He was third, but now fourth as Alexander Albon gets ahead of him.

  14. 'Albon likes oversteer'published at 11:29 British Summer Time 24 October 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

I've heard a reason for why Albon is struggling - and this has come from a very good source. It's to do with car behaviour and what the two drivers want.

Verstappen likes a pointy car, in the same ay Michael Schumacher used to like a pointy car. Albon normally likes oversteer, he's comfortable with it. But with this Red Bull, he's not comfortable with it.

They're trying to tame the unpredictability of the rear end and when it's predictable, Verstappen is just saying 'give me more front' and Albon would want to say 'I want to have less front, I will go quicker if the car isn't as pointy as it is.'

But of course, Verstappen is half a second up the road from him, so the team aren't going to listen to Albon when Verstappen is saying 'give me more front'.

Every development on the car is lead by the way Verstappen wants the car top behave - and that just makes it worse for Albon and there's no way out.

Ki Elowwod: Surely Red Bull should look to Mick Schumacher if they decide to replace Albon.

JJ Jackson: Looking ahead to Alonso return, am I right in thinking he's never won world championship in the fastest car?

Chris: Interesting talk of Gasly to Renault, alongside Alonso. That would be interesting!!
