Both Mercedes cars improve their times and Lewis Hamilton is now the quickest of the weekend with a 1:16.931. That's six tenths faster than Valtteri Bottas.

Remember, Hamilton needs one race win to overtake Michael Schumacher's 91 and take the outright record. Bottas is going to have to be at the top of his game to ensure Hamilton doesn't get pole position later on.

  3. 'Albon needs to up his game'published at 11:14 British Summer Time 24 October 2020

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

It's pretty clear that Alex Albon needs to up his game to retain his seat and Albon will know that - it won't be a big surprise.

He's been doing OK but the worry is he hasn't stepped up since the first weekend. People say he's improving but it's difficult to see and that's the disappointment for Red Bull.

He's no longer a rookie, he's been with the team a year, he's still off Max Verstappen and there is pressure in that situation - just ask Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat.

  4. Postpublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 24 October 2020

Valtteri Bottas was fastest in session one and session two and he's the first to set a time today - 1:17.888. That's on the soft, with Lewis Hamilton on the same tyres, but is 0.028 behind.

  5. 'We need two cars closer together to fight Mercedes'published at 11:11 British Summer Time 24 October 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Alex Albon is running out of time to secure his Red Bull seat for 2021. Team principal Christian Horner said: “We want Alex to claim that seat and justify that there is no need to look at any other alternative than Alex. Everyone in the team wants to see him do that.

"In Mugello it started to look like he had started to turn the corner. He’s had a couple of difficult weekends so he needs to bounce back here and particularly Imola with a strong weekend from start to finish. He’s a popular member of the team but we need two cars closer together in order to fight the Mercedes. That’s what we’ve got to do.”

If Albon is dropped, Horner says Red Bull would look outside their driver pool for a partner for Max Verstappen - which means Sergio Perez or Nico Hulkenberg. “If we had to look at a different solution, we would have to look outside the Red Bull pool of drivers simply because there is not one available we would look to put in. There are some quality drivers on the market that could be unemployed next year.”

It's the three hardest compounds from Pirelli this weekend and the softs got limited action yesterday because of the stop-start nature of second practice after a tyre test in the first 30 minutes.

But the reaction from the drivers was a bit mixed.

  20. Verstappen and Stroll avoid punishmentpublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 24 October 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll escaped punishment following an investigation into a crash during practice at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

The pair collided as Verstappen tried to overtake Stroll after they had raced down the pit straight.

Stewards called both drivers to give evidence and ruled that neither was "wholly or predominantly at fault". Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas was fastest overall in the session from Verstappen, with Lewis Hamilton eighth.

Red Bull's Verstappen swore over the radio immediately after the crash between the two drivers, asking what Stroll, of Racing Point, thought he was doing.

Stroll had passed Verstappen at the final corner of the previous lap. Verstappen attempted to pass back at the start of the next lap, but Stroll turned in.
