Sergio Perez has done a great job on the hard tyres.

To be fourth, eight tenths away from the pace of Bottas and ahead of the rest of the midfielders on that hard tyre. Really good job from Perez so far.

Kevin Magnussen will be happy with his lap to spring up to seventh. Leclerc 13th, Sainz 14th and Vettel 17th will all be unhappy so far.

Charles Leclerc gets out there on the softs so let's see what Ferrari have. Time to stop messing around and show us some pace.

Is Alexander Albon the right man for Red Bull? Why or why not?

Max Richmond: As far as racing goes Albon's fine, his overtakes this year show he's happy to get his elbows out. His issue is that Red Bull have had Max's feedback for the last three years while his team-mates change. That means they are focusing on making the car faster instead of more stable.

  8. Postpublished at 11:29 British Summer Time 29 August 2020

Max Verstappen is also on the softs and splits the Mercedes pair, only 0.083 adrift of Bottas. This is all set up quite nicely for a three-way battle for pole later on.

And maybe some rain thrown in to the mix to cause carnage.

  9. Postpublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 29 August 2020

Loads of cars out there now. The Mercedes two are on the softs and Valtteri Bottas has the edge with a 1:43.813. That's six tenths clear of Lewis Hamilton in second. Then comes Sergio Perez of Racing Point third.

  10. Postpublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 29 August 2020

The clouds are still looking moody but the tiny drizzle of rain has eased up so Lando Norris is back out there on the mediums, so clearly not too slippery. We have another 38 minutes of this session to go.

Is Alexander Albon the right man for Red Bull? Why or why not?

Jeremiah Kariuki: Red Bull have the advantage in that they can still bring Gasly back to the main team if Albon continues with his not so impressive performance.

Sid: Albon seems like a nice chap - too nice, perhaps. Needs to get his elbows out and his head in a more focused place. I’d like to see him do better.

Oooh. A bit of rain. Back to the garages for everyone. If it rains in three hours' time during qualifying then it would be a bit more exciting.

  14. All good for Ricciardopublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 29 August 2020

Daniel Ricciardo was second in FP2 yesterday but saw his session end early as he had to park his car by the side of the track, but all seems fixed and he's good to go today.

  15. Will we see rain?published at 11:08 British Summer Time 29 August 2020

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

I was just thinking: When was the last time we had a wet Belgian Grand Prix? Because I just can't think of one.

All the talk of rain in Belgium; it does rain more than most places and there are dark clouds looming but we don't get that many rain-affected races.

  16. Postpublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 29 August 2020

The first two times on the board are from the Haas pair, both on the mediums. Early bragging rights for Kevin Magnussen with a 1:45.984 and that's three tenths better than Romain Grosjean.

  17. 'I love driving around this track, it's incredible'published at 11:07 British Summer Time 29 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

If you believe Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes were behind Red Bull on pure pace on Friday in Belgium. Literally, they were, in terms of headline lap times. The world champion was ‘only’ third fastest, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen leading the way and the surprising Renault of Daniel Ricciardo second.

“I love driving around this track, it’s incredible,” Hamilton said. “It is very close out there. I think the Red Bulls are just a little bit quicker at the moment, but even the Racing Point is right with us and Daniel Ricciardo in the Renault was very close. That makes it exciting, we have some work to do to try to dial in the car a bit more.”

Chief engineer Andrew Shovlin said: “Both drivers have struggled a bit with the balance, mainly with a weak front end, and we looked a bit slower than we normally do on a Friday even when the car seems to be working well. On the high fuel runs the midfield appears a bit closer than they did in previous races, so we can probably find a bit of time there.”

Still, it would be unwise to expect too much change. The idea that the Racing Point - more than a second a lap slower than Mercedes so far this year - will be equal with Mercedes when it matters is far-fetched to say the least. So expect the black cars to leap forward once running starts on Saturday.
