  5. 'A very difficult day'published at 10:50 British Summer Time 29 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Friday was resolutely not a good day for Ferrari, Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel down in 15th and 17th places. Of course, they are unlikely to be that far down come qualifying. Or at least so you’d think. But the drivers were very much not encouraged.

“Very difficult day,” Leclerc said. “It is a surprise to be so far back. In P2 we tried quite a lot of things. I tried something quite aggressive on downforce levels but it didn’t really work out so we came back on that. We are just lacking pace on that so we need to work hard to catch back but I don’t expect miracles this weekend.

“It doesn’t feel good and it’s sad to see Ferrari so far down but always our work as drivers is to give our best and that is exactly what Set and I trying to do in the car.

“We are struggling quite a lot with balance this weekend and normally in the rain the balance only gets worse and the issues in the dry are worse in the rain so it is going to be difficult if we don’t find any solutions if we cannot fix the balance problems of today.

“We are struggling with the balance. It is quite unpredictable at the moment but last year and before last year there was very difficult Friday and we managed to come with the solution on Saturday and that is what we are working on for.” Team boss Mattia Binotto said the team were struggling to get the tyres in the right operating temperature window, which might be a function of trying to run the car with too little downforce so it was not generating enough load in the corners of the middle sector.

Is Alexander Albon the right man for Red Bull and why / why not?

This race last year was Alexander Albon's first for Red Bull after his promotion from Toro Rosso (now Alpha Tauri), with Pierre Gasly demoted the other way.

But how has Albon done in his year with Red Bull? Well, no podium finishes, although he was twice in contention for race wins before collisions with Lewis Hamilton twice ended those dreams. Of course, being Max Verstappen's team-mate is surely the toughest job in motorsport.

So for our first chat today we want you to assess Albon's first year with Red Bull and tell us whether he is the right man for the team. As always include your reasoning why and tweet us using the hashtag #bbcf1 to have your say.

This graphic, published on the F1 Facebook page, shows just how much Williams have improved since this race last year - and how much Ferrari have gone backwards for them to both now meet in the middle.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fastest in second practice at the Belgian Grand Prix, with Daniel Ricciardo's Renault also ahead of the Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton was third fastest as the top three were separated by only 0.096 seconds.

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas was down in sixth, behind Red Bull's Alexander Albon and Racing Point's Sergio Perez.

The times are unlikely to be representative of real performance.

Ferrari, in particular, were out of position, with Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel 15th and 17th.

This is what happened on Friday morning. It takes you a long time to get to Ferrari. Slower than the Racing Points, the Renaults, the McLarens, the Alpha Tauris and one of the Alfa Romeos.

  11. Bottas quickest in first practice - read the reportpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 29 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Valtteri Bottas headed Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes one-two ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in first practice at the Belgian Grand Prix.

The usual top three in Formula 1 2020 were separated by tiny fractions - Bottas was 0.069 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who had 0.012secs on Verstappen.Racing Point’s Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll were fourth and fifth.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, winner at Spa-Francorchamps last year, was 14th, ahead of team-mate Sebastian Vettel.

The long straights of Spa, which has flat-out sections in the first and final thirds of the lap, were exposing the lack of straight-line speed of the Ferrari, a problem this season following rule clarifications over the winter.

Mercedes, encouraged to work flat-out on their engine by Ferrari’s advantage on the straights in 2019, have made a step forward in this area, although the progress on their chassis outweighs it.

But, yet again, it was a miserable day for Ferrari.
