"Will the result be the same as yesterday? Probably not. It is going to be fun. It will be a good one for the spectators to sit on the couch and watch."

  8. 'Verstappen has to be considered the favourite'published at 09:17 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2020

The man who starts second surely has to be considered the favourite for the Turkish Grand Prix. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is in a Racing Point sandwich, but he has been the only driver to offer any sort of challenge to Mercedes this season, and Lewis Hamilton is four places back.

Verstappen was gutted to end up second after impressively topping qualifying until then. He was two seconds faster than anyone else in second qualifying, but the intermediate tyres used by the Racing Points to be so fast in the top 10 shoot-out were simply not working on the Red Bull. “It’s the first time I sit here this year upset,” he said, and he looked it. On paper, he should have plenty of pace to get ahead of Stroll and establish a lead that even Hamilton will find difficult to claw back.

But Verstappen is also worried about starting off the racing line on a track that has proved so slippery all weekend. “I’m also starting now on the inside so that’s not very lovely,” he said. “But we’ll find out.”

  9. 'Let's get it'published at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2020

Max Verstappen, who starts second on the grid, will have polesitter Lance Stroll in his sights from lights out.

Verstappen was top in all of the three practice sessions and the opening two phases of qualifying but missed out on what would have been only the third pole position of his career.

  13. 'A special performance'published at 09:09 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Lance Stroll spoke for pretty much everyone when he said he was “shocked” to end up on pole position at the Turkish Grand Prix. It was a special performance - and continues his trend of looking very good in the wet, something which for whatever reason he is not able to reproduce especially often in the dry.

And beyond the obvious joy of the moment, there was also a sense of relief, as Stroll has had a rough run for the last couple of months. He started the season pretty strongly, but has not scored a point since his podium at the Italian Grand Prix (which could have been a win had he not messed up the re-start).

Then he crashed out because of a puncture at Mugello, was taken out by Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari in Russia, missed the Eifel Grand Prix with an illness that turned out to be Covid-19, and has had two difficult, incident-strewn races since, in Portugal and Imola. And now this. “So much has been going on,” he said, “and it’s such a nice way to bounce back after a few rough weeks. Since Mugello, really it’s been a rough ride for me, so feels good. Feels really good right now.”

  15. 'Highlight of my career'published at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2020

Racing Point's Lance Stroll, who secured his first ever pole position: "I can't really put it into words. I'm shocked. I didn't expect to be up here after FP3.

"There were a lot of things we weren't sure about coming into qualifying. We didn't look that competitive in Q3. I'm so happy right now, I put that lap together at the end and I was under a lot of pressure.

"I only had one lap to do i at the end because we started on the wet tyre and then boxed for inters. I had one lap were I got traffic - or Valtteri [Bottas] who spun in front of me - I had one lap at the end and had the confidence in the car. I nailed pretty much every corner and put it together.

"Since Mugello, it has been a pretty rough ride for me so it feels good. Feels really good right now.

"I knew [Sergio Perez] was up there at the front. Listening to my engineer, he was giving me feedback about where we were. But in these conditions you don't really have time to think about what's going on around you. It's really just about the next corner in front of you.

"One we got on the inters, the car was pretty hooked up for these conditions. To put it on pole is a special moment for me. The highlight of my career."

  16. Stroll takes maiden pole for Turkish GP - read the reportpublished at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

    Lance StrollImage source, Reuters

Racing Point's Lance Stroll took a sensational maiden pole position in a chaotic wet qualifying session at the Turkish Grand Prix.

The Canadian beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.290 seconds as Lewis Hamilton, on the verge of his seventh title, could manage only sixth place.

Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate and only title rival Valtteri Bottas was ninth. Stroll's team-mate Sergio Perez was third ahead of Red Bull's Alexander Albon and Renault's Daniel Ricciardo.

Hamilton will be disappointed with his grid position but looks in extremely good shape to win the title.

He will clinch it, and equal Michael Schumacher's all-time record, as long as Bottas does not outscore him by more than seven points, and as the Finn is starting three places behind the world champion, he would not be expected to beat Hamilton.
