The front half of the car is still embedded in the barrier, on its side. I have never seen anything like that. Goodness me.

Grosjean hits the wall head on at the exit of Turn Three and the car splits in two behind the cockpit. The front of the car appears to have separated the barrier in longitudinally. Looks as if the halo could have been crucial in saving Grosjean, at first evidence.

Grosjean out of the car after huge crash
James Hammond: I've never seen anything like that before - can't quite comprehend how that's happened... Genuinely feel sick, so glad to see him talking in the medical car.
Adrian Kellers: I can’t remember the last time I saw something like that! Super glad that Romain is ok.
Rob Hill: My heart fell through my stomach for a second there. So glad Grosjean is OK. How does a modern F1 car explode like that?!
Incredible replays of Romain Grosjean leaping out of the car and over the barriers and incredibly brave medical officials going straight to him to help him escape.
All the drivers and team officials applaud the TV screens as they watch the replays.

What on earth did he hit? He speared off the right-hand side after the exit from turn three. He must have had contact with Lance Stroll. And then as soon as he hit the wall there was a huge explosion of flames. Something must have caught light as he hit the wall and he was engulfed in flames. The whole car was in flames. It was a horrible-looking accident for Grosjean.
All the drivers have returned to the pits and Pierre Gasly is out of his car and appears to be watching a replay of the crash on a screen and looks as confused as the rest of us. Not seen such an explosion of flames for a long time.

A nasty looking accident for Romain Grosjean. He hit the barrier and then there was an explosion of flames. It didn't look like it came from the car it looked like it came from behind the barrier.

Huge relief as Romain Grosjean is out of the car and in the medical car. That was a really horrible looking crash.

Big one into the wall, one of the Haas drivers has had a very big accident coming into turn two.
There's a big crash on the main straight and huge flames as Romain Grosjean went into the barriers. Hoping everyone involved in that is OK.
LIGHTS OUT!
Lewis Hamilton gets away well but Max Verstappen is away even better and he is up to second!
If Jack Nicholls is to be believed it sounds as if Williams' British driver George Russell is going to need it...

I don't think George Russell has got any chance of points today, unless something crazy happens. This is not a race that I see throwing up a curve ball that sees Russell sneaking into the points I am afraid.
Everyone is lined up where they should be and Max Verstappen's dashboard disco lights appear to have been fixed so we are all set for lights out...

The battle for the race win is going to be interesting. Just a bit of unknown. This could be an interesting one. Hamilton will want the win but it might not be a straightforward grand prix.

Tyre chat - everyone is on mediums as they head off on the formation lap apart from Charles Leclerc (hards), Romain Grosjean (hards), Nicholas Latifi (hards) and Carlos Sainz (softs).

Bahrain has become more characterful since the lights were switched on. We have just had better races since it has become a night race.
