Max Verstappen ended a frustrating season for Red Bull on a high with victory in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Dutchman took his second win of the year ahead of Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, who were unable to challenge in second and third.

An early safety car locked in the strategies of the leaders and led to a soporific race.

McLaren took third in the constructors' championship as Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz took fifth and sixth.

The prize for overhauling Racing Point - who started the race 10 points ahead but for whom Lance Stroll could finish only 10th as team-mate Sergio Perez retired early on - is in the region of $10m (£7.5m) of prize money.

Red Bull's Alexander Albon was fourth, 20 seconds behind team-mate Verstappen but close enough to the Mercedes to block any adventurous strategy choices, as the team weigh up whether to retain the British-Thai driver for 2021.

Sebastian Vettel, who finished 14th in his final race at Ferrari: "Nothing about today should get mentioned. It was quite a bad race for us. We tried everything.

"For sure it was emotional day with the mechanics waving goodbye on the grid. I felt there was a different dynamic. I am sad for the guys. I will miss them but happy to embark on a new journey."

  8. A great year - McLaren boss Brownpublished at 16:05 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

McLaren boss Zak Brown on Sky Sports after his team clinched third in the constrictors championship: "It was a good day today. It has been a great year. It has been a really difficult season in the public spotlight some of our challenges. To bring the investment in this weekend, the job Lando and Carlos have done and the ladies and gents at the factory, it is really true team effort.

"It might have looked like a boring race but it was very exciting on the pit wall.

Asked what he is expecting from their Ricciardo-Norris line-up next season: "Probably more trouble. I think we have the most exciting line up in Formula1 next year on track and off track. Lando has come into his own this year. Daniel is a seven-time winner. They will push each other. I can't wait."

  11. Sainz incident didn't cost us - Strollpublished at 15:56 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Lance Stroll, who finished 10th, speaking about the incident with Carlos Sainz in the pitlane, with the Spaniard under investigation for going too slowly: "Didn't cost us much in the end. He did what he did. Our race was really bad at the end.

"We lost tyre temperature and the pace dropped. It was a great year, a lot of missed opportunity. It is a shame we didn't get there in the constructors today."

  12. Covid is no joke - Hamiltonpublished at 15:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

More from Lewis Hamilton who finished third after sitting out last week with coronavirus: "Covid is no joke. I never thought it was. I knew it would be tough because people out there are losing their lives.

"I always find very strange to see world leaders laughing it off like it is nothing. To come back here this weekend I knew I wouldn't physically be where I was all season but I made it.

"I am destroyed. I do not feel good. I am happy and grateful I am alive and live to fight another day."

  13. I am leaving very happy - Perezpublished at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Racing Point Sergio Perez, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is sad to be leaving the team this way. Some of them were crying at the end. You have to remember the whole season. Well done to McLaren they really deserved that.

"I am leaving very happy. That team will always be my favourite team in Formula1. I look forward to seeing them winning more races.

"Who knows what will happen next. I am just looking forward to go going back home. Whatever comes next I will be ready for it."

  15. Albon unsure on futurepublished at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Alex Albon, speaking to Sky Sports: "The car been very good all weekend. If it was a couple more laps I could have got past. I struggled a bit at the start on the hard tyre. It was a good weekend for me.

On his future: "I don't know. I wouldn't know. From my side all it was to have a good weekend. Go home now and see the family and we will see."

  16. 'Albon's strongest weekend of the season'published at 15:39 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Christian Horner on Sky Sports, asked about Alex Albon's future: "Alex has done very good job today. It has probably been his strongest collective weekend this season. It gives us a complete set of info to go away and analyse it and work out what we are going to do."

  17. 'Max's most dominant race for us'published at 15:36 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Red Bull boss Christian Horner on Sky Sports: "That was the best, most static race we have enjoyed for a long time.

"2013 was last time anyone but Mercedes won here. Max, all weekend, has been absolutely clinical.

"You always want to win the last race because it sets up the winter.

"We have been chipping away the last few races. In Bahrain, Max left feeling gutted. To be taken out from nothing he did wrong was tough. He bounced back and did an unbelievable job. He totally controlled the race. It is his most dominant race for us.

"Mercedes have done an absolutely top class job this year. They are not standing still. We carry over a large element of this car into next year and that gives us great momentum. Next year is not that far away now. It gives everyone a good shot of confidence."

  18. 'I hope 2021 cars are better to follow'published at 15:35 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

More from Lewis Hamilton on the podium, asked if contracting coronavirus affected his race: "Physically, massively. I don't think I have ever been so blown. But, look on the bright side, I made it through and I didn't think last week I would be here.

"I am looking forward to recovering, getting back into training and back to where I know I should be.

"I hope and pray in 2021 the cars are better to follow. I don't know if it was a boring race to watch but once you get within two seconds you are sliding around and in turbulence the whole time."

  19. 'I am just glad it is over'published at 15:33 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Third placed Lewis Hamilton: "You can't win them all. Considering the past couple weeks I have had I am really genuinely happy with the weekend.

"It is not as good as we would like but congrats to Max. It was a really hard race for me physically. All year physically I have been fine but today I definitely wasn't. I am just glad it is over.

"A big thank you to the team for their continued support. It is still a fantastic result to get two podium finishes."

  20. 'Really proud we got one-two in the drivers' championship'published at 15:31 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Second-placed driver Valtteri Bottas said: "Red Bull were too quick today, surprisingly quick. We thought race pace would be pretty identical but they could really control the race and build a gap when needed. I was trying everything I could but couldn't keep up with them.

"I felt like it was a solid race on my part. No mistakes - I couldn't get anything more out of the package today. In that sense it was a good race. I was ahead of my team-mate. It's been a while since I've been on the podium so it's going to be nice, even though there's not going to be champagne there.

"Some time off for Christmas now, when I can see the family. It's been a while - I can't remember the last time I saw them. So a quick reset, a quick training block and then start again from zero and try to do better.

"The team has been amazing this year so I'm really proud we got one-two in the drivers' championship."
