Valtteri Bottas beat Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position in a bizarre qualifying session at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Bottas beat Hamilton by 0.007 seconds, but Red Bull's Max Verstappen had a faster lap ruled out for exceeding track limits.

And Hamilton set a much faster lap in the second part of qualifying, 0.4secs quicker than the eventual pole, but could not match it when it mattered. Verstappen salvaged third with a final attempt, just under 0.2secs off Bottas.

Verstappen's team-mate Sergio Perez took fourth place, ahead of the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz and the improved Alpine of Esteban Ocon, for the team's best qualifying performance of the year so far.

Ocon's team-mate Fernando Alonso, quick on the first laps of the first session of qualifying, faded after a spin at the end of that session, and could manage only 13th on the grid.

And Daniel Ricciardo was even worse off in the McLaren, knocked out in first qualifying and 16th, with team-mate Lando Norris seventh ahead of the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

  3. 'Qualifying was messy'published at 16:29 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

Red Bull's Sergio Perez, who starts in fourth place, speaking to Sky Sports: "Not the greatest qualifying, it was very messy in terms of finding my grip.

"I never really got on top of the car, I felt like I lacked a bit and really getting into it.

"Not really everything work today - but at least we have a good starting position. Our race pace seems to be better, so hopefully we can put a lot of pressure on Mercedes and fight for a podium.

"There is a great opportunity tomorrow and hopefully we are able to put things together."

  4. 'I was struggling with grip'published at 16:24 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who starts third on the grid: "I thought qualifying was very difficult to drive. I was struggling a lot with the grip. That first lap in Q3 was decent but I just had a moment at Turn Four, so I went a little bit off track [and had his time deleted].

"I was quite confident we could do another good lap but there was a car in front in the last two corners - it just disturbs you, especially with the low grip we already have and the tough wind out here. Basically it cost me a lot of lap time. But it is what it is.

"Of course it's not ideal but we will try and fight the Mercedes tomorrow in the race. Hopefully everything stabilisers a bit more, because up until now, it's not been a lot of fun to drive here."

  5. 'I gave it everything'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who starts second, says: "A great job by Valtteri and our teams for us both to be on the front row, it was not expected. We have to be happy for that, it was not the perfect lap but I gave it everything.

"You can never be satisfied, we exist to keep moving forward but I'm happy with what we're doing and the steps we're taking."

  6. 'Good to be on pole again'published at 16:20 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas, who starts on pole position: "It's a good feeling to be on pole.

"Feels like it's been a while. It's been a weak point for me in the first two races. The team have been working hard all weekend and we have a good position for tomorrow.

"It felt better with the mediums. Like last year, we put the mediums on at the end of qualifying and we tried it again but I think maybe the wind picked up on the last run and I couldn't quite get the temperature in them, so I'm glad we still had a good result.

"Starting with the medium tyre tomorrow is good, and it opens up opportunities that we can go as long as we want in the first stint.

"We need to focus on the race start and then go from there."

The wind picked up and suddenly the track wasn't there any more. The wind picking up makes the cars a little bit looser in certain exposed corners, and it just affected the cars too much.

It could've been pole position for Max Verstappen. The wind picked up and he didn't have any lap time on he board. Coulda, woulda, shoulda!

This is a bit of an anti-climax to qualifying.

We need some kind of sprint race! This is boring!
