  1. Bottas to gamble?published at 14:37 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Verstappen does not want to be the one rolling the dice and being first to change tyres. It's the same for Hamilton too. If you time the slicks right you can make up five seconds.

If you are Bottas in ninth you can take a punt. I don't think we are there yet though.

  2. Team radio - McLaren to Norrispublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

"So Lando, we don't want to be the first team onto dry tyres. We want to eke out this inter tyre."

  3. Postpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

    Lap 20/63

So who is going to dive on to the slicks first? Everyone watching and waiting to see what everyone else is doing. If a team gets it right it could be a masterstroke, if they get it wrong it could be a race-ending disaster.

ft411: If Ricciardo braked to "bait" Pérez into re-passing, should there be a penalty for him for driving unnecessarily slowly under SC?

Nulla Pax: Ferrari telling their driver to "calm down" - Epic stuff ;)

Vesper Martini: That's clear team orders by McLaren on the guys.

  5. Russell in the top 10published at 14:36 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

By the way, George Russell, who has never earned a point while driving for Williams (he picked up three for Mercedes as a stand-in for Lewis Hamilton) and he's 10th at the moment, on course for one point.

  6. 'Verstappen and Hamilton flying'published at 14:34 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Verstappen and Hamilton were three seconds quicker than Leclerc on that lap alone. They are absolutely flying.

Hamilton has some damage remember. He will be able to fix that at the stop.

  7. Team radio - Norris to McLarenpublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

"I have a lot of pace in me, I just can't use it at the moment. I need clean air."

This was just before Ricciardo was told to, and did, let the Briton move into fifth.

  8. Team radio - Verstappen to Red Bullpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

Verstappen: Just keep an eye on people starting to pit for slicks."

Red Bull: "We'll look at that, Max. Just focus on the race ahead."

  9. Postpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

Daniel Ricciardo in fifth is told by McLaren let team-mate Lando Norris through and the Australian obliges by letting the Briton pass.

  10. Hamilton's wing issuepublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

Here's a shot of the damage Hamilton sustained in bouncing over the kerbs when Verstappen took the lead.

Will it affect him later in the race?

The 2021 season is not letting anyone down. This is brilliant. We're at lap 15 of 63 laps with a lot of drama to come.

  12. Team radio - Sainz to Ferraripublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

Sainz: "How many mistakes am I going to do!!"

Ferrari: "You are too quick, calm down."

  13. 'Hamilton and Verstappen proving themselves'published at 14:30 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

The top two are marching away. It is a huge gap. We know how good they can be in the wet and right now are proving it. They will be doing some lapping soon.

  14. Postpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

    Lap 15/63

Carlos Sainz goes into the gravel after going straight on at Tosa, but doesn't lose any places and is still seventh.

He gets a bit sweary over team radio, angry at himself, but it could've been worse.

  16. Perez penalisedpublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Perez will be right at the back when he takes that penalty. Under the safety car, if you are off the track you are no longer rightly allowed to take the place back.

  17. 'Hamilton finding form'published at 14:27 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Hamilton may be coming to terms with that front wing damage. He is finding a bit more form. Hamilton was really under pressure from Leclerc but has stabalised that.

Arthur Moore: F1 in the rain is just as good as it gets. Is there another sport that is improved by rain? I've never turned on the football and gone "oh yah it's raining"

Matthew Murnaghan: I always love a bit of rain and action!

AGL: I think Gasly’s tyres are starting to hurt him, going backwards that fast doesn’t seem right.

  19. Perez gets stop-go penaltypublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 18 April 2021

Disaster for Sergio Perez, who gets a 10-second stop and go penalty for overtaking two cars under the safety car after he ran wide and went off the track.

He started second, but is going to drop right to the back from fourth. Once again it's Max Verstappen v Lewis Hamilton.
