If I was Sainz and Perez, I'd go for the soft and bank the early grip [in the sprint race] but for Verstappen and Leclerc it's a much more complicated decision.

Good pace from Fernando Alonso as he sets the fastest first sector time on his way to going fifth quickest on his soft-tyre run. He's within seventh tenths of George Russell's time.

Ten minutes to go and there could be good news at McLaren because Lando Norris has his helmet on and looking at his car being readied eagerly.

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez is up into second having got to within 0.081s of George Russell's time on mediums.

Lewis Hamilton reports that his rears are overheating.

Most of the drivers are on softs and are looking to see how long they can go on them.

Sergio Perez did 18 laps, three short of the length of the sprint race, on the softs earlier in this session and there didn't appear to be a significant drop off during that run.

Charles Leclerc is also on the softs and he goes second quickest with 1:19.740.

Esteban Ocon's first soft tyre run is a 1:21.526 to put him 12th.

Verstappen is lapping two laps quicker than Charles Leclerc so maybe this is his sprint-race simulation.

The Mercedes looks to be pretty handy in the second sector, however I think that does mean their straight-line speed is a limitation in sectors one and three.
