  6. Alpine done for the daypublished at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2022

Alpine have issued an update on the problem that has led to Fernando Alonso spending most of his morning in the garage, and say that it has brought an early end to testing for them:

"After further investigations in the garage following Fernando Alonso’s on-track stoppage earlier this morning, the team can confirm the issue was a problem with the hydraulics. A minor sealing issue led to a fire in the back of the car.

"The team has successfully completed 266 laps during the three days of the Barcelona shakedown. Repairs on the car will continue, and as a result we won’t be running for the remainder of the day. We look forward to be back in action at the next test in Bahrain."

Stephen Taylor: With Kimi now having retired I am now hoping McLaren and particularly Lando can have a good season. Hopefully he can nab that first win. A title challenge for Lando would a dream but I am trying to manage my expectations as toppling Red Bull, Merc and Ferrari be hard.

No clarity from Haas on Mazepin/sponsor. Team boss Gunther Steiner says he will "work on" the situation "next week".

Is it worth sticking with the Mazepins, given the situation and his performance? “There are legal issues we have to go through and then we see what comes out.”

The second red flag of the day is a first of sorts. Pierre Gasly has gone off and hit the barrier at Turn Five, and is the first driver to have an incident that costly this week - every other red flag so far has been caused by a technical issue. The front end of the car has been damaged.

The Frenchman had just left the pits and was on an out-lap, and both front wheels appear to be a little skewed, so it remains to be seen whether it was driver error or a car problem.
