Max Verstappen took a comfortable pole position from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc at his Red Bull team's home race, the Austrian Grand Prix.
Verstappen was just 0.048 seconds clear of Leclerc as Carlos Sainz made it a Ferrari two-three with Lando Norris fourth in the upgraded McLaren.
Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton was fifth from the Aston Martins, Lance Stroll unusually ahead of Fernando Alonso.
Red Bull's Sergio Perez failed to make the top 10 for a fourth straight race.
That's the grid sorted for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, so now our focus turns to the Sprint race tomorrow.
That starts with a short qualifying session at 11:00 BST which sets the grid for the Sprint race itself at 15:30.
If you want to read more about how the format works, head here.
Carlos Sainz, who finished third in qualifying: "We had a strong qualification and definitely feels like we have made some progress recently. Closer to Max. Overall have to be quite happy.
"We put ourselves in a good position for Sunday to try and get a podium with both cars. Tomorrow will be a different day. We just have to stay focused.
"We will look into the smallest details and see if we can pick up a tenth or two for tomorrow but I believe the conditions tomorrow will be very different."
Charles Leclerc, who finished second in qualifying: "It feels good to finally have a clean qualifying again and be on the front row.
"I managed to put everything I wanted into the last lap in Q3. Very close to Max. It is a good step forward.
"It was very tricky, it was all about putting everything together and we did that today."
Max Verstappen, who secured pole position: "It was very difficult because of all the track limits. We don't do it on purpose but with these speeds and high-speed corners it is so hard to judge the white line. That is why a lot of people were getting caught out. It was about surviving.
"Very happy of course being on pole but it is a very long weekend. It is always tricky round here.
"We know this is a different weekend with the whole format. Very happy with today, tomorrow is different but at least we know the car is quick."
It is a fourth pole position in a row for Max Verstappen and he stands atop his Red Bull after bringing it to a stop.
Track limit issues aside, that all felt pretty effortless for Verstappen and is an ominous sign for his rivals on Sunday.

Andrew Priestley: Pole is Max Verstappen’s to throw away, but the grid make-up from 2nd-10th is anybody’s guess, in any order.
It is a quiet start to Q3 with Alex Albon followed out by Max Verstappen.
