Oscar Piastri is out on track and has just gone purple in the middle sector. Has the McLaren rocket ship that we saw at Silverstone also made its way to the Hungaroring?

The Australian is on the soft tyres and banks a 1:18.949 to slot into third place behind the Red Bulls. Well done, Oscar.

We know Daniel is an experienced driver anyway. He's got plenty of race starts under his belt and track time shouldn't be that crucial for him to really get up to speed here, and he's probably more interested in getting a bit of a handle on the characteristics on the Alpha Tauri itself.

Carlos Sainz is wobbling at Turn Two in his Ferrari but the Spaniard knows what's causing his car to misbehave. "I think I'm struggling with the wind," says Sainz to his pit wall.

Moments later, Sergio Perez experiences a snap of oversteer at the same corner. "Tyres are not cooling down," says the Mexican. "Yep, I think this is what we're going to have to live with in qualifying," is the reply from his engineer.

Daniel Ricciardo, returning to Formula 1 with Alpha Tauri this weekend, was 14th, 0.451secs slower than his team-mate.

The Australian was the big focus of the day, after he was drafted in following the sacking of Dutchman Nyck de Vries last week.

Ricciardo drove a steady session as he set about learning his new car, starting well over a second behind Tsunoda and edging closer. He had more or less matched the Japanese driver's time by the end of his running on his first set of tyres but Tsunoda moved clear on their qualifying runs on the soft tyre.

"Positions is not too relevant at the moment," Ricciardo said. "Today was more to feel where I am with the car. It all felt pretty familiar. It felt in a way like I never really left.

"This afternoon, a little bit to find on the new tyre but nothing I'm concerned about. The car felt OK.

"A bit more out of me (on Saturday) and some things in the car we can try and work on. It looked like Yuki also had a pretty good day so if we can put all the things together we can do OK."

Kevin Magnussen is joined by the Williams of Alex Albon and Aston Martin's Lance Stroll on the C5 soft tyre, the rest of the pack who have decided to creep out of the garage are on the mediums.

Sergio Perez's time at the top of the timesheets has come to an end, as Red Bull team-mate and championship leader Max Verstappen is the new frontrunner with a 1:18.478.

Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu and Daniel Ricciardo are up bright and early on a set of medium tyres, while Kevin Magnussen, who welcomed his second daughter last week, is on the softs.

The Haas driver goes to the top of the timesheets with a 1:20.454.

That time is quickly beaten, however, as the Red Bull of Sergio Perez shoots past the Dane on the yellow mediums with a 1:18.558.

  8. 'Super-limited' with new tyre format - Verstappenpublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

The new alternative tyre allocation also brought out the same emotions from Max Verstappen, who ran two sets of soft tyres in the second session.

"We haven't used a lot of tyre sets today," said the two-time world champion. "With this new format, you are super-limited with the tyres you can use, and I didn't want to use them today to have a bit more of a better preparation tomorrow.

"It's a bit of a shame. There are so many people around and you basically don't really run a lot, and we will have to see what we can do to improve that because we are basically just saving tyres which is not the correct thing."

Air temperature is 24.2C and the track 43.5C. Dry conditions prevail (no risk of rain), with just a very low chance (<20%) of a light shower later this afternoon for qualifying. Tomorrow's race will be dry and sunny.

George Russell has got his sunglasses on while taking a picture with a fan. Touch wood that's a good sign the weather will behave itself at the Hungaroring today.

The Mercedes driver propped up the timesheets in second practice but Russell explained how the team set out their Friday running. "We were on a very different programme to everyone else, only using one set of the medium compound tyre throughout," he said.

"For FP2, that meant we were running a used medium tyre, so the lap times don’t give a true representation of our pace.

"I’m sure tomorrow we will be better. We’re just focused on trying to improve and we know we tend to improve as the weekend progress, which is the right way around."

  13. Weather watchpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

Lewis Hamilton said his Mercedes felt "at its worst" as he set the 16th-fastest time in Friday practice.

His frustrations were heightened by a new approach to tyre allocation being tried at this race that has limited the number of sets available to drivers.

The so-called 'alternative tyre allocation' reduces the number of tyre sets over a weekend from 13 to 11, changes the distribution across the three available compounds, and forces drivers to use hard tyres in first qualifying, mediums in second and softs in the top-10 shootout.

The idea is to reduce tyre usage on sustainability grounds.

Hamilton said: "I only had one tyre. Not really a great format this change they made for this weekend.

"It just means we get less running. Not ideal. There are a lot of wet tyres they throw away every weekend - a lot. Maybe they should look at that rather than taking time on track away from the fans."

  15. Second practice classificationpublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

We were treated to a full timesheet in second practice but it was a mixed-up order in Budapest because of the new tyre allocation rules, with championship leader Max Verstappen down in 11th place and the Mercedes out of sight in the bottom half of the board.

Conditions were much more settled in the second hour of running and the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets ahead of the McLaren of Lando Norris.

Daniel Ricciardo was 14th in the Alpha Tauri and was four tenths slower than his new team-mate Yuki Tsunoda, who finished inside the top five in P4.

Pierre Gasly ended the session in third place, while Alpine team-mate Esteban Ocon, who had a couple of dicey moments with other drivers in the pit lane, finished in fifth spot.

Mercedes were way down the order in second practice, with Lewis Hamilton in P16 and George Russell P20.

Sergio Perez cried "I cannot believe this" on the team radio as he sat in his busted-up Red Bull but the Mexican was quick to hold his hands up after the first practice crash.

"It was just a mistake from my side,” said Perez. "But the guys have done a tremendous job to get the car together and get some running in FP2. At least we got some good data to look through."

Once the sun had set on Friday practice, Perez tweeted: "Better feelings for tomorrow, we will give it everything we’ve got."

The upgraded Red Bull of Sergio Perez was left in a mangled mess after he crashed on his very first lap of practice.

Perez was sent into a spin after dipping a wheel onto the grass approaching Turn Five. The Mexican came to a stop in the barriers with significant damage to the front of his car.

The red flag prevented many drivers from getting any dry running as rain started to fall and the session continued to be disrupted, with Carlos Sainz also spinning his Ferrari to bring out another stoppage.

George Russell was fastest with Oscar Piastri in second but the hour was a write-off with the red flags and weather.

Sergio Perez was on the back foot straight out of the Hungarian gate on Friday when he crashed his Red Bull heavily within minutes of first practice starting.

The Mexican needs to keep a positive of frame of mind for Saturday's qualifying session, as he's failed to qualify in the top 10 and fight for pole position for five races in a row.

With Daniel Ricciardo back in the mix and eyeing up Perez's Red Bull seat, now is the time for Checo to shake off the pressure and turn that frown upside down.
