Terrible session for Mercedes. George Russell is frustrated, to say the least, on the team radio.
No! The Mercedes man is knocked out! George Russell will start P18 for tomorrow's Hungarian Grand Prix!
Alex Albon lifts himself out of danger but Lando Norris pushes the Willians back down into trouble.
George Russell, are you going to make it to Q2?
While the bottom five try to survive, Alfa Romeo's Zhou Guanyu has just gone quickest ahead of the Red Bull of Sergio Perez.
Albon, Hamilton, Hulkenberg, Sargeant and Magnussen need to get a shift on. The clock has turned red and the time is inching away.
Just under three minutes to go and Lewis Hamilton has dropped into the mosh pit in P17. The Mercedes man and his buddy George Russell should safely be able to bank a lap before the cut off time. We say that, but anything could happen here.
Lando Norris is the next driver to have a lap time deleted after his McLaren rattles across the kerb at Turn Five.

We are seeing a few more times being deleted now so they are hot on this and this is what we thought might happen because they weren't being policed in practice. We saw a lot of drivers getting away with it and maybe not being as strict with themselves as they should have been in their preparations for quali.
Esteban Ocon was the memorable winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2021 but the Frenchman is struggling to get out of the drop zone in Q1. One big push needed by Ocon to launch himself up the order? No problem. He's settled into fifth spot, while his Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly goes into the top four.

Carrie: Jack Aitken speaking truths about how much we all trust Christian's comments when it comes to drivers.
The battle of the new Alpha Tauri team-mates is on. Daniel Ricciardo goes up to eighth on the timesheets but Yuki Tsunoda, the younger of the two, shoot up to fourth behind the Red Bull of Sergio Perez.
Sorry, Kev. Get yourself back in there. Carlos Sainz goes up to ninth quickest but his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc doesn't sound too thrilled on the radio. The Monegasque driver is in P14.

I don't think I'm being particularly contentious when I say that we won't believe a word what Christian (Horner) says about the line-up being sewn up for next year. We've seen time and time again Red Bull don't stick to their contracts necessarily all the time, they will do what suits them as they see fit with their drivers and they do have the freedom to do that.
New dad Kevin Magnussen manages to crawl out of the relegation group to 15th place, pushing the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz down to 16th spot.

The Haas of Kevin Magnussen is in the drop zone after one of his lap times was deleted for exceeding track limits.
Valtteri Bottas is still top dog ahead of the two Red Bulls of Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen.

It's not a (circuit) that you would say is an absolute favourite for the drivers but they definitely enjoy the challenge of this track, it's one of the tracks that offers most corners per kilometre probably of the entire calendar outside of the street circuits and qualifying is always quite a thrill here so I think this session in particular they are going to be looking forward to.
The two Mercedes are in the elimination zone but that won't last long as the pair cross the line after their first flying laps and move up to third for George Russell and fourth for Lewis Hamilton.
First times on the board are from the Alpine boys. Pierre Gasly goes quickest but is quickly gazumped by his team-mate Esteban Ocon.
A few moments later, Sergio Perez is the fastest man on the track but the Mexican needs to shuffle to the side, as the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas clocks a 1:18.818.
Is Valtteri the dark horse this weekend?
