Pretty impressed with Zhou Guanyu at the moment. I know he topped the first part of qualifying but I thought perhaps he was just enjoying the hard tyre, was wishing he could do the whole qualifying session on the hard tyre, but he's still managing to stay up there on the medium tyre, currently in P6.
The floodgates open now and everyone but Lando Norris heads out for another medium run before this Q2 session comes to a close.
In danger are Esteban Ocon, Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll.
The track is free for Max Verstappen to enjoy all by himself and the Dutchman crosses the line to go second quickest behind Lando Norris with a 1:17.547.
The McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are looking way down on the Red Bull of Max Verstappen. The two-time world champion has headed back out on track to put a banker time on the board and hopefully save himself from a Q2 disaster.
Everyone else is having a breather in the pits.

Looking nice for McLaren right now with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri sitting up there in P1 and P2, they were thinking this might not be a great weekend for them off the back of Silverstone of course with that podium and that fourth place as well for Oscar.

(Perez) as a driver will know that just getting through is not enough at this stage especially with all the hype around Daniel at the moment. He needs to be putting in strong performance, he needs to show the Red Bull bosses why he should stay, not be in survival mode, I'm sure he will have that on his mind as well.
Hang about, has Max Verstappen been slapped on the wrist for track limits? He has! The Dutchman's time is deleted and he is replaced at the top of the timesheets by Lando Norris' McLaren.
The clock ticks down to 10 minutes to go and Max Verstappen has come out to play. The Dutchman, who is 99 points clear in the drivers' championship, goes top of the board with a 1:17.296, which is faster that George Russell's pole lap last year.
'Play stupid games, win stupid prizes'. I'm stealing that one, Chris.
Sergio Perez sets the first time of this Q2 session and clocks a 1:17.675.
Lance Stroll goes second quickest, with Esteban Ocon slotting into third spot in the Alpine.

Quest: Alfa Romeo team (Zhou Guanyu) didn't come to play at the Hungarian grand prix. This Q1 is something else.
Chris Moule: Mercedes - play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
One step complete for Sergio Perez. The Red Bull driver just needs to get through in Q2 now and the five-race curse will be broken.

There will be some disappointed drivers, we've already heard Russell on the radio but I think Daniel Ricciardo should be pretty pumped getting into Q2, that's the first time in four races that Alpha Tauri have made it into Q2.
Only medium tyres should be bolted on for Q2.
From a maiden pole in Hungary in 2022 to watching the rest of qualifying from the garage in 2023. A day to forget for Mercedes and George Russell.

Daniel Ricciardo out-qualifies team-mate Yuki Tsunoda on his return to F1 - and makes it into Q2. George Russell failed to get through in his Mercedes, and is very disappointed about being put out in a lot of traffic at the end of the session.
Traffic troubles wrecked George Russell's attempt to drag himself out of the bottom five. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff slammed the desk in anger when the news was confirmed.

Russell is out - he couldn't improve on his time, he had a poor first sector so maybe a mistake there but he's down in 18th.
