Nine groups out and not one player under par for the day. Japan's Hiroshi Iwata has gone back to level par for the day after a bogey at the sixth.

Former Open champion, Scotland's Sandy Lyle (+13), has started badly, at three over after two. Conditions are tough.

A tough opening test, with both tee shot and the approach heavily protected by bunkers. When the wind blows you tend to be hitting right into it and even a solid drive leaves a long second shot. Miss the fairway and you're probably in punishing rough.

It seems being hit by a golf ball was a common thing yesterday as a marshal was hit by two golf balls within an hour.

Bill Davies, who was marshalling at the 16th hole, was initially struck on his leg by Rickie Fowler's ball and then on the shoulder by Charl Schwartzel's.

Here is an interview with him here.

"Two and half seasons in one day so far at Hoylake this morning. Shafts of sunlight, rodding rain, big black clouds, honking wind. Muggy, too. Risk of thunder until lunchtime then the sky will settle and the intensity of the gusts will reduce from about 35mph to 25mph and eventually 10-15 by this evening.. The wind's blowing from the east currently, a different direction to the prevailing west winds, so plenty there to keep the players minds occupied. Adam Scott said last night a day of wind would separate the field. Looks like that day is here."

  7. Third birdie in a row for Iwatapublished at 07:54 British Summer Time 18 July 2014

Hiroshi Iwata is a man on the charge. A third birdie in a row at the par-five fifth takes him to one under for the day and three under for the tournament. If only he hadn't started with two bogeys.

It has just been brought to my attention that Rory McIlory hasn't always failed on Friday's this year, with three of his last 15 tournaments bringing a better second-round score than first round. Still that means he hasn't done as well in 12 tournaments...... Stats like that can't fail but to get in your head.

  9. Woods 'not surprised' by startpublished at 07:46 British Summer Time 18 July 2014

Tiger Woods said he was not surprised with his impressive start to the Open Championship at Hoylake despite a season curtailed by injury.

The 14-time major champion began with two bogeys but fought back for a three-under-par 69 to be three off the lead.

Woods, 38, had back surgery in March and has only played once since.

He said: "I knew I could do it. I felt good about a lot of things I did out there, especially to fight myself back into the championship."

Is there more to come for Tiger?

Two-time champion Ernie Els said he was badly affected by his opening drive at the Open at Royal Liverpool, which hit a spectator in the face.

The South African three-putted from 18 inches for a triple-bogey seven and went out in 42, seven over par.

Els, 44, improved on the back nine but finished with a disappointing 79.

"I felt pretty bad about it. I hit the guy, who was probably in his 60s, right in the face and there was blood everywhere," said Els.

  11. Birdie for Iwatapublished at 07:39 British Summer Time 18 July 2014

Go on Hiroshi. Japan's Iwata has well and truly and woken up after a second successive birdie on the fourth to move back to two under for the tournament and level par for the day. He is only four shots adrift of leader Rory McIlory. None of the 18 starters are under par for the day yet though.

    Weather

A look at the BBC weather forecast above and you would have to say conditions are set up perfectly for the players going off later today. Leader Rory McIlory will hope the rain has long gone before he gets underway this afternoon.

And here he goes again. After dropping two shots over the opening two holes yesterday and today, Japan's Hiroshi Iwata (-1) has again got his act together with a birdie at the third.

If only he could play a 16 hole Open without the first two holes, he would probably be in with a shout.

If the early signs are anything to go by, we could be in for some high scores this morning with not one of the nine players through the first hole under par. Japan's Hiroshi Iwata has already dropped two shots to move back to level par, while Scotland's Jamie McLeary (+2), America's Shawn Stefani (+2) and England's Tyrrell Hatton (+5) have also dropped shots.

Iwata probably won't panic too much as after dropping two shots on the opening two holes yesterday, he went to on to pick up four shots over the rest of the round. Slow starter then......

So who should we watch out for early on today with a lot of the big hitters not teeing off till later on?

Leader Rory McIlroy (-6) doesn't start until 14:27 BST, with Tiger Woods (-3) off at 14:05 BST, and Sergio Garcia (-4) at 13:38 BST.
