Faldo admits he has got his love back for the Open after making his return at Muirfield last year. He had given it a miss since 2010 and it is now 22 years since Faldo won his third Open title at Muirfield.

"I had a couple of years off, but I got the bug back last year, which was nice and now this week I've got my son Matthew on the bag, which is fun for me," he told BBC Sport.

"I'm just here out of curiosity. Making the cut is my goal as I haven't done that for many moons."

Solid from Tiger as he makes his par on four. It has all been a bit of a scrap for Woods so far though as he fights for form after a lengthy absence with a back injury.

With a tee shot flanked by out of bounds on one side and the clubhouse on the other, bravery and accuracy are tested. A sharp dog leg to the right requires a well-positioned drive, before an approach of around 190 yards to a green protected by a swale on the safer left side away from the out of bounds on the right.

Well short from Tiger Woods as he attempts a difficult putt up the ridge on the fourth. Already two over after three holes, the American faces a testing six footer for par.

Rory McIlroy on the other hand has another birdie chance on three after picking up a shot on the second to move to one under. Rory looks as though he is about to get on a roll.

Graeme McDowell, who is playing the first, says mental strength is the key to a successful Open.

He said: "There are certain weapons you need in the bag for Open Championships. Playing in the wind, ball flight control, hitting it high, hitting it low, moving the ball around and shaping it against the wind are key elements.

"You also have to dial into the type of shot required for the short game. It's much more along the ground - lob wedges are left in the bag and pitching wedges, eight irons and six irons are the order of the day."

  12. McDowell well preparedpublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

Graeme McDowell ahead of his round on BBC One: "Things are good. Confidence is a dangerous thing in this game you have to measure your expectations. I've been here since Sunday and played this course four different days in very different weather conditions. It's perfect today and looking forward to the challenge.

"The weekend in France a couple of weeks ago was wind and rain and as we know in an Open Championship, weather and conditions play a massive part. The fact I've seen the course in varied conditions is useful."

  13. Birdie for McIlroypublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

Rory McIlroy birdies the second after pitching to within inches of the hole from the fairway with his second shot to move to one under.

Tiger Woods also makes his first par of the day after starting the day with two bogeys, but playing partner Angel Cabrera drops to three over after a double bogey at the third.

Shouts of "C'mon Rory, lad" usher McIlroy down the first as the royal-blue trousered Northern Irishman sets off in search of a third major. McIlroy outdrives Spieth and Matsuyama and his shot soars high into the Wirral sky, only tumbling back down when it has kissed the clouds. It remains to be seen whether his American-style high ball flight can be made to work in the winds of an Open at Hoylake.

Tiger Woods is safely on the green in two on the third hole as he looks to halt a very dodgy start.

Playing partner Angel Cabrera is not so lucky though as he is on the green in four after hitting his second shot out of bounds from the middle of the fairway.

    Frank Nobilo
Former European Tour golfer on BBC TV

"Bogey bogey is not the start Tiger wanted but these people here are expecting more and they will probably get it later in the day. I think making the cut will be realistic. He has expectations, the crowd expect something so it's quite flammable but making the cut is realistic."

  18. Birdie for Comptonpublished at 09:45 British Summer Time 17 July 2014
