McIlroy can however kick-back in knowing he is already £20 up for the week. The Northern Irishman took the sum off his compatriot Darren Clarke thanks to a bet on their practice round on Friday.

    Winner: Adam Scott

"He has spent much of the last fortnight at Hoylake getting to know the course and making friends with the members.

"He has challenged in the last two Opens and should have won in 2012. He has also done a remarkable job of coming in under the radar despite being a worthy world number one."

    Big week for: Graeme McDowell

  3. Woods suffers second straight bogeypublished at 09:40 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

It doesn't get any better for Tiger Woods as he misses the hole to the right from about eight feet for a second successive bogey. Woods is two over after two.

Back on the first, Rory McIlroy pushes his close-range putt past the hole to waste a good birdie opportunity.

  4. Outright lead for Leishmanpublished at 09:36 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

Australian Marc Leishman takes the outright lead on three under with his third birdie on the day on the 10th.

  5. Spieth finds troublepublished at 09:35 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

    Andrew Cotter
    BBC Sport commentator

"Spieth is a very good all round player, he doesn't do one particular thing well. He doesn't have a particularly huge drive but a very good short game. But that's a poor shot into the bunker on one where Stenson was."

Brilliant from Rory McIlroy as he looks to take advantage of the perfect early conditions.

He pitches to within five feet of the hole on the first to leave a good birdie chance.

  7. Get involvedpublished at 09:32 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

Jason in Birmingham via 81111: Ernie Els and Angel Cabrera both finished in the top 10 in 2006. Cabrera has done well in majors for the last couple of years so my money is on him at 66/1.

Chris in Coventry via 81111: Keep an eye out for Mikko Illonen, he's in good for having won recently, consistent player and he's won around Hoylake before as an amateur. The Open tends to spring up a surprise every now and then so my money is on him!

  9. Postpublished at 09:31 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

A nice recovery from Tiger Woods on the second after finding some deep rough with his tee shot. The former world number one makes a good connection and the ball dribbles onto the green. A putt from distance for a birdie.

"On the tee from USA, Tiger Woods". Starter Ivor Robson welcomed Woods to his first competitive round at Hoylake for eight years and how much has happened to him since then. Woods puts on a relaxed but focused front, tips his hat and fizzes an iron down the middle. The bear-like Angel Cabrera up next, and launches his driver almost into the Dee Estuary, as if to say, "this is how we play golf in Argentina."

McIlroy, dressed in royal blue, finds the fairway with his opening tee shot. The Irishman is guaranteed huge support this week if the ovation he got on the first is anything to go by.

  12. Rory McIlroy (09:26)published at 09:26 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

    Age: 25 Country: Northern Ireland.

World ranking: 8. Majors: US Open (2011), PGA Championship (2012)

Since opening with a 63 at St. Andrews in 2010, the Open is the major that seen McIlroy struggle. McIlroy is a threat off the tee, though his putting can disappear at the worst of times. Holding him back this year has been the peculiar habit of blowing up over a nine-hole stretch, particularly on Fridays. If he can avoid that, he might find reason to love this championship again.

  13. Birdie for Sergiopublished at 09:26 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

A dribbler from 15 feet for Sergio Garcia...drops for birdie. A super start for the Spaniard who picks up a second shot in three holes to earn a share of the lead. He judged the pace of that one perfectly.

Tiger Woods insists winning is his only goal at this week's Open Championship despite a season curtailed by injury.

He is making his second competitive appearances in four months after a back injury.

The 14-times major champion said: "With this particular injury with my back I didn't want to do anything. I couldn't get out of bed and I couldn't move around the house.

"That made me appreciate just how fortunate I was to be able to play at that high level for the better part of 17 years. It made me appreciate that a lot more."

In from Tiger Woods for a bogey. Angel Cabrera is the only player from his threesome to come away with a par from the first as Henrik Stenson also suffers a bogey.

Early days though and it must be noted Woods bogeyed the first back in 2006 on his way to lifting the Claret Jug.

What a shot. Swede Robert Karlsson chips in from the rough to birdie the 12th, following a birdie on the 10th.

A dropped shot at least for Tiger Woods on the first as his putt from off the green comes up about eight feet short of the hole. He has already played four and is in danger of opening his major return with a double bogey.

  18. Birdie for Clarkepublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 17 July 2014

That's the way to do it Darren. A beautifully judged putt from 15 feet for 2011 winner Darren Clarke secures birdie on three and its back to level par for the Northern Irishman.

A shocker for Tiger. His chip out of the bunker flies across the green and rolls down the slope leaving him on the semi-rough. Not the start he would have wanted as he is left needing something miraculous to save his par.
