I'm sure I'm not the only one but I do find some of the coverage of Tiger Woods rather baffling. Yep, he's having a bit of a rough few days but he's only just back from injury and he won five times last year, when he last had any kind of fitness. Had Phil Mickelson missed the cut this week people would have just put it down to one of those things, a rusty Woods makes the cut and people are picking him apart under their microscopes. Anyway...

"Been chatting to renowned golf photographer David Cannon of Getty Images about his iconic picture of Seve Ballesteros winning the Open at St Andrews in 1984.

"That, to me, sums up the Open Championship and his career in one image," said Cannon, now on his 32nd Open as an official snapper. "I was pretty young, it was only my third Open, and Seve had always been my hero. I knew that putt could be a great moment, so I threw away half a roll of film - about 15 frames - and put in a fresh roll.

"When it dropped there was a massive fist pump and then he turned around to where I was sitting. I was just lucky to be in the right spot, and he punched the air for a number of seconds. I looked at the other photographers and knew they'd run out of film before he punched the air.

"He made it a tattoo on his arm. That must be the highest honour, to have your picture turned into a tattoo on the subject's arm. That's pretty amazing."

Laser show from Luke Donald at the moment, right at the pin at six. Zach going with five iron from 205 yards, short, choppy swing but that's another goodun. They're tearing round at the moment, the first pair took about three hours to complete their rounds, which is good to see.

Donald with a 12-footer for eagle and, having read Zach Johnson's line, he over-compensates. Cabrera pulls out a plum from the rough at the first. Looks like a hotty at Hoylake, T-shirts all-round and a heat haze shimmering behind Tiger as he lets one fly at 12.

Luke Donald pulls out an early contender for shot of the day, a magnificent three wood into the fifth. Remarkably, playing partner Zach Johnson gets inside it. Mickelson covers the flag with his second at the first, Zach Johnson leaks his eagle putt right at five.

Two 71s are in, Hoffmann and Hurley of the United States, the latter with the clubhouse lead on +4. Dufner has picked up four shots in three holes, he's just eagled 10 to get to -1 for the week. Mickelson taking iron at the first and he fizzes one down there, Cabrera pulls out the big fella and tugs his tee shot left.

Tiger Woods is one over through 10, he picked up birdies at one and nine but also a double at seven - he just can't keep those big numbers off his cards of late. "Three years ago Sergio threw out 'I'm never going to win a major'. He wanted a hug. You just don't say things like that. Sergio gets tight, he'll push one and pull one, he's had a few opportunities.

"There are some who won't win a major because of physical things, some will struggle with the technical aspect or even mentally. For me, his is the technical problem. The big plane in his back-swing. I believe it has cost him all the way back to Carnoustie."

Garcia finished second to Padraig Harrington at Carnoustie in 2007.

Many thanks Andy, this is Ben Dirs for the next couple of hours. Nobody in the clubhouse yet but there are some good and bad rounds being put together. Five-time champion Tom Watson is two under through 13 and went out in 33. US Open champion Martin Kaymer, on the other hand, is five over through five after three bogeys and a double. No movement at the top of the leaderboard, although Denmark's Thomas Bjorn is into the red after birdies at four and five.

McIlroy tees off at 14:40 and currently has a six-shot lead.
