  1. Post update

The two captains will be cooking up their singles selections right now somewhere in the depths of Gleneagles. We will have news on that just as soon as the white smoke emerged from the hotel's chimney.

In the meantime, Rob Hodgetts' report is up and expanding on the website.

We will be back tomorrow for the singles action and the conclusion of the 40th Ryder Cup. Andy Cryer will be on the buttons well before the first tee shot is launched into the distance at 11:36 BST.

    See you there.

  2. Shots of the day

    Ian Poulter

Ian Poulter has had a pretty ordinary campaign so far, but that superb chip in off the 15th fairway in the morning's fourballs was some of the old magic.

You can relive that and the rest of the day's shots in this jaunty video.

  3. Post update

USA started on Friday with jumpers depicting a silhouette of the Ryder Cup itself. Today they went with an American flag. At this rate they will have the plane home on Sunday's design.

Tom Watson will need every bit of his belief, wisdom and wiles to breathe life into their challenge tonight. But if that momentum starts flowing their way, who can say?

AJ: Europe has to go top heavy tomorrow, kill it stone dead early, don't allow the US a sniff of another miracle.

  5. Who plays fourballs in Europe?

    Nicolas Colsaerts

Belgium's 2012 Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 live

It's a format most players play when they're young in Europe. You don't play fourballs you play foursomes in competition. That might be why.

  6. Captain reaction

Team Europe's Jamie Donaldson of Wales (2nd L) and Lee Westwood of England (2nd R) are congratulated by Captain of Team Europe Paul McGinley

Europe captain Paul McGinley: "The guys were brave again today, but they produced again. It's been a great team performance. Collectively as a team everyone has pulled their weight and collectively we've come together.

"My job as captain is I'm half a day ahead of everyone else. I've had my idea of where we're going with the singles tomorrow and all afternoon I've been discussing it with my vice-captains. We'll discuss it with a few of the players. The eraser has been used a few times!"

  7. Post update

    Iain Carter

BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 live

"I just wonder whether Valderrama 1997 might be brought up in the team room. Europe led 10½-5½ then after battering the Americans 6-2 on Saturday but only just scraped home in the singles."

  8. Post update

If you are Tom Watson who do you try and light the fuse on an improbable comeback tomorrow? Throw super rookies Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed in up top and hope their more senior colleague take their fearless lead?

Will Paul McGinley try to kill it off early doors and stem any United States resurgence at source with a top-loaded selection?

I think the Victor Dubuisson, runner-up in this year's WGC MatchPlay Championships, could yet be the trump card.

  9. Player reaction

Justin Rose of Europe and Martin Kaymer of Europe

Martin Kaymer: "It was very exciting. We had our chances, I think no team wanted to win the match, that's what it felt like, but as we walked up the 18th I said to Justin, 'We deserve at least a point.'"

Justin Rose: "It feels good. They (Spieth and Reed) have had a great Ryder Cup. I think that match was there for the taking but we caught a break, they got a poor lie on the 18th. But foursomes can be like that and we worked hard today."

  10. Player reaction

European Ryder Cup players Sergio Garcia (L) and Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy: "It's nice to put that first win on the board this week. We have had some great battles, even today, and we were able to get the better of Hunter and Jim. It's just great to put a point on the board and inch us closer to the win."

Sergio Garcia: "I think Rory beat three guys today in foursomes - that's not easy to do! I wasn't at my best. I was a little bit nervous. He played just amazing."

The bromance is strong between these two.

  11. Get involved

    #bbcrydercup

Ben Taylor: Great position for Europe to be in. The Miracle in Gleneagles doesn't have the same ring.

Andy Stevens: Goodness. Europe beat USA 7-1 in foursomes.

Paolo Brand: Rosey! Rosey! Rosey! Justin Rose you are Europe's hero & talisman. What an incredible performance dude!

  12. Post update

At 10-6, Europe's advantage is the same they held at Brookline in 1999, when the United States swept back to win 14½-13½.

It is the same margin the United States had in Medinah before being overhauled 14½-13½ in the Sunday singles.

If the United States are to regain the trophy it will be in the most swashbuckling style.

  13. Post update

Vice skip Miguel Angel Jimenez is bumbling about in the midst of the celebrations, waving a mini European flag.

His team have walloped the United States 7-1 in the foursomes across the opening two days. It has always traditionally been the Americans' weakest format and history is repeating itself once again.

  14. Europe at the races

    Andrew Magee

American PGA Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

"I hate to say it but the European team is loaded with stallions, they're fresh and playing great."

  15. Rose & Kaymer v Spieth & Reed

    Match halved

    John Murray

BBC Radio 5 live commentator at Gleneagles

Justin Rose lifts his putter to the skies and shouts at Martin Kaymer. The match score is 10-6, just like Medinah.

  16. Post update

    Tom Fordyce

    Chief sports writer at Gleneagles

Party on around the 16th after Furyk's miserable chip gifts McIlroy and Garcia the hole and with it the match. Ponytailed vice-captain Jimenez hugs his victorious players like a mob family don welcoming his favourite nephews. Rory flings his ball to the crowd, Sergio follows suit with his cap. 10-6 Europe, and the US will need their own Miracle of Medina. The Gobsmacking of Gleneagles?

  17. BreakingKaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    All square after 18

Jordan Spieth goes close, but leaves it a little wide. Justin Rose drains his and Europe have the half as they poach the final hole.

No clean sweep for Justin Rose, but a commanding lead for his continent ahead of the singles.

  18. BreakingMcIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe win 3&2

No escape for the Americans as Rory McIlroy rolls in the final putt and is engulfed in blue and white hi-tech fabrics as his team-mates spill forward to congratulate him and Sergio Garcia.

A popular pair off the course as well as being a little useful on it.

  19. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 1 up after 17

Now then. Patrick Reed has got a bounder of a lie in the greenside bunker. He has to come out the sidedoor and Jordan Spieth has plenty to do on the green.

Martin Kaymer has a much clearer route to the pin and lands up to within five feet. Can they pinch a half out of the fire?

  20. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 2 up after 15

Rory McIlroy might have put this one to bed. He plays out of the bunker and to within four feet with his third shot. The Americans are further away in four.

Start chalking it up Mr McGinley...

  21. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 1 up after 17

Second shots on the last from within a few feet of each other.

Jordan Spieth steps up first. Into the greenside bunker. Can Justin Rose find the green and crank wide open a chance of a half? Not yet. He follows into the same trap.

  22. Europe's new 'power pair'... GMac and Dubush

    BBC Radio 5 live

McDowell: "Victor's iron play over the last couple of days, I'm not sure I've seen better iron play consistently. It was stunning. I really can't say enough about the talent he is.

"The captain asked me to be a leader this week and I really wanted to embrace that role. I knew Victor was good but I didn't know he was this good. I've let this guy go. If he wins tomorrow I think you can really say he's arrived on the world stage."

Dubuisson: "My friends are with me, they're like my family. The crowd support has been fantastic."

  23. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 2 up after 15

    Europe's Rory McIlroy

Back on 16, Rory McIlroy and Hunter Mahan have gone left and right off the fairway respectively. Sergio Garcia has a shot out of the rough and chases the ball out with a mighty blow. That is up somewhere just short of the green. Jim Furyk playing out of a bunker is more conservative and the Americans have work to do.

  24. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 1 up after 17

To the last then. Martin Kaymer twists his torso through his tee shot and, with the help of a friendly kick, is up right alongside Patrick Reed's effort in the centre of the fairway.

  25. Rose & Kaymer v Spieth & Reed

    US 1 up after 17

    Andrew Magee

American PGA Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

"What a shot from Jordan Spieth, to put that within six feet over the bunker. As soon as Patrick Reed missed that putt on 16 Jordan ran over to his partner and said 'It's ok, it's ok. There are still two holes to play.'"

  26. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 1 up after 17

    USA up

Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed will have at least a half point to add to their tally as a little piece of Spieth magic and some clunky play from Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer puts them one up with one to play.

  27. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 15

Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy are walking a high-wire act, but they are not too far from home now. The Americans - Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan - are still within striking distance, but there are now only three holes left for them to land the punch.

  28. Post update

    Tom Fordyce

    Chief sports writer at Gleneagles

Knee-deep in the heaving throngs around the 16th green, waiting for the Rose/Kaymer match to come through, and the thousands all around are glued to the gathering European charge on the giant screen beyond the bunker. It's like watching with a bunch of friends of friends on the world's biggest sofa. Who's got the family pack of crisps?

  29. Dubuisson & McDowell v Fowler & Walker

    Europe win 5&4

    Karen Stupples

Solheim Cup winner on BBC Radio 5 live

European Ryder Cup players Graeme McDowell (L) and Victor Dubuisson

"What a tremendous talent this man (Dubuisson) is. He's been hitting it right to left, left to right, he's hit it in so tight sometimes GMac hasn't even had to putt. What a star of the future this guy is."

  30. BreakingDubuisson & McDowell v Walker & Fowler

    Europe win 5&4

Europe are straining at the leash. Graeme McDowell cosies the ball up to the hole and Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker fold out on the 14th green to make it 8½-5½ to the boys in blue.

  31. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    All square after 16

After two good opening shots, Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer have made a dog's dinner of the 16th with the German flopping his attempt to chip down onto the bottom deck and Rose undercooking the recovery.

Kaymer's par putt runs by and suddenly Patrick Reed has a foot tiddler to put the United States one up with two to play.

U.S. Ryder Cup player Patrick Reed

Someone get a doctor in here quick! A choke of the highest order as he contrives to find a way round the hole.

That's the pressure of the Ryder Cup and there is more to come as they head for the 17th all square.

  32. Dubuisson & McDowell v Walker & Fowler

    Europe 5 up after 13

Victor Dubuisson has just about put the lid on Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler, firing to the heart of the 14th green.

  33. Dubuisson & McDowell v Walker & Fowler

    Europe 5 up after 13

    Europe up

Graeme McDowell goes close with a long, long putt as he attempts to win the hole. It seems like Europe's chance has gone, but Jimmy Walker surrenders the hole in painful fashion, rinking his three-foot putt for a half wide. Five up and five to play.

  34. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 2 up after 14

    Europe up

Europe's Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland (R) and Sergio Garcia of Spain

There she blows. Rory McIlroy rolls his shoulders through the ball and his putter obliges, sending it away to put Europe two to the good.

  35. Westwood goes past Seve in overall Ryder Cup points tally

    Iain Carter

BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 live

This is turning into an excellent afternoon for Europe. USA desperately need Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan to turn around their match. For Lee Westwood, after his 2&1 win alongside Jamie Donaldson, that takes him above Seve Ballesteros on overall points (23 to 22.5).

  36. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 13

Sergio Garcia then. Has he got his seaside legs? He certainly has. A lovely little shovel out of the sand and Rory McIlroy will have a three-footer to win the hole and inflate Europe's lead in the match.

  37. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 13

Hunter Mahan looks like he is playing some cross-country golf, sending his tee shot on 14 swinging way, way right and onto the adjacent fairway. Jim Furyk gets his machete out and heads into the wilds. He does a decent job of hacking out, but Rory McIlroy in a greenside bunker is surely better placed for Europe.

  38. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    All square after 15

    John Murray

BBC Radio 5 live commentator at Gleneagles

Kaymer and Rose have missed chance after chance to take this match all square and this chance was, well, unmissable.

Following a monster putt from Justin Rose to within gimme range, German Kaymer tickled in a two-footer to pull Europe level with the super rookie pairing of Spieth and Reed.

  39. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    All square after 15

    Europe up

Patrick Reed allows his putter to slip through his fingers in despair as the his par putt teeters on the rim but refuses to drop on 15.

The American duo are not going to give Martin Kaymer his par putt from two feet. Fair enough as well. The German looks like he has a major rick in him at the moment. Not here though. He taps in and Europe are level in the match.

  40. Post update

    Iain Carter

BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 live

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson

I think Tom Watson's going to face a lot of criticism if this plays out as an American loss. Not playing the super rookies (Spieth and Reed) yesterday afternoon or Bradley and Mickelson today: Watson has made some very questionable decisions and he's not been the most convincing in the public forum. I think he'll come in for a lot of heat if the US lose.

  41. BreakingDonaldson & Westwood v Johnson & Kuchar

    Europe win 2&1

Jamie Donaldson has to take a free drop out of the sand with his ball in up to its neck in the greenside bunker. He has got a cheeky little lie with the ball sitting high and handsome on the back though.

Matt Kuchar has coaxed and cajoled the ball up to within a couple of feet, but if Donaldson can get this up and within range....

He can! Hole halved and another point safely delivered to the board for the Europe.

  42. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 13

Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy are keeping the slenderest of leads alive. They are off the 13th green with a one-hole lead intact.

  43. Post update

    Tom Fordyce

    Chief sports writer at Gleneagles

"Emergency reinforcements for the Fowler/Walker pairing as the otherwise redundant Keegan Bradley rocks up with a brace of high fives and a single tuna sandwich. You'd hope Rickie and Jimmy (a combination that could work both in country music and evangelical preaching) weren't too peckish - Bradley scoffs the sandwich like a man who hasn't eaten in a week."

  44. Donaldson & Westwood v Johnson & Kuchar

    Europe 2 up after 16

Lee Westwood goes aggressive off the 17th tee, when perhaps discretion was the better part of valour. His attack on the pin falls short and into a greenside bunker.

Zach Johnson has a little leeway to work with and finds the green. It is a whopping great putt for Matt Kuchar to contend with but, if Westwood's ball is plugged in the sand, he might get two taps at it.

  45. Donaldson & Westwood v Johnson & Kuchar

    Europe 2 up after 16

    Nicolas Colsaerts

Belgium's 2012 Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 live

That was a pretty tricky shot there for Jamie and he did well to leave it to five feet. Westwood cleaned that up brilliantly.

An excellent chip from the Welshman left England's Westwood a nerve-jangler which he made no mistake with. Dormie for the duo.

  46. Donaldson & Westwood v Johnson & Kuchar

    Europe 2 up after 16

Jamie Donaldson (R) of Europe celebrates his birdie putt with Lee Westwood

Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson have locked up at least half a point as the English half of the duo tickles home from four feet to put them dormie two.

That will be the least they want.

  47. Post update

    Rob Hodgetts

    BBC Sport at Gleneagles

"Rickie Fowler holes a clutch putt for the win on the 11th green against the flashing blades of McDowell and Dubuisson and marches off under the arm of captain Tom. Watson is whispering in his ear and Fowler is nodding, like a prize fighter getting instruction from his seconds. McDowell and Dubuisson stride through the narrow chute towards the 12th, nodding, winking and bumping fists with imploring fans."

  48. Dubuisson & McDowell v Walker & Fowler

    Europe 4 up after 11

    Europe down

Similar distances but Rickie Fowler downs his putt, while Graeme McDowell's stays sunnyside up. A little chunk of Europe's meaty lead in the bottom match is whittled away.

  49. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 12

Sergio Garcia's putting jitters are starting to rear their head above the parapet. The Spaniard leaves it short on 12 when Europe have a sniff of a two-hole lead.

Playing partner Rory McIlroy puts his arm around Sergio in an attempt to whack those mental moles.

  50. Post update

    Tom Fordyce

    Chief sports writer at Gleneagles

    Ryder Cup

"Watch out Europe - the Vikings are coming. Actually, they're already here, moored by the 12th green. Rest easy though - while there's no shortage of grog being drunk, if they've come to pillage, they're doing an awful lot of singing and shaking hands too."

  51. Dubuisson & McDowell v Walker & Fowler

    Europe 5 up after 10

Victor Dubuisson still producing molten gold from his fairway irons - a lovely strike up to 11 puts Europe up alongside Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler. Matching the Americans will be good enough with such a plump cushion underneath them.

  52. Donaldson & Westwood v Johnson & Kuchar

    Europe 1 up after 15

Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood are keeping the wheels on the wagon. Donaldson just wellied a fine tee-shot down the 16th as they stretch for home.

  53. Post update

    Rob Hodgetts

    BBC Sport at Gleneagles

    Justin Rose

The crowd in the stand behind the 12th tee is in good voice as the Rose group arrives, which comes in handy for a throaty roar when the Englishman holes a clutch putt for a half to stay one down. US debutants Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed belie their respective ages of 21 and 24 and are taking on Europe's new talisman head on. Rookies in name only, this pair have bags of belief and ample attitude.

  54. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 1 up after 13

Martin Kaymer had a chance there after Patrick Reed's putt slithered by. The German could not make it stick though and parity remains elusive for Europe.

    Saturday's foursomes latest scores:

    Donaldson & Westwood (Europe) v Johnson & Kuchar (USA) - Europe 1UP after 15

    Kaymer & Rose (Europe) v Spieth & Reed (USA) - USA 1UP after 13

    Garcia & McIlroy (Europe) v Furyk & Mahan (USA) - Europe 1UP after 11

    Dubuisson & McDowell (Europe) v Walker & Fowler (USA) - Europe 5UP after 10

  57. Dubuisson & McDowell v Walker & Fowler

    Europe 5 up after 10

Victor Dubuisson is doing nothing for changing French stereotypes. He sweeps a lovely iron tee shot up to within two feet of the pin on the par-three 10th and reacts with a casual nod and slight purse of the lips.

Jimmy Walker responds though with a peach of his own, right up to within the same distance. By the time the four players arrive on the green a truce has been declared. Balls picked up. And on we go.

  58. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 1 up after 12

Martin Kaymer has been bits and pieces so far - with the Americans short of the green on 13 the German misses the target with Europe's second shot, screwing wide and into some scruffy rough.

  59. Get involved

    #bbcrydercup

Ali Chahin: Justin Rose has led by example, played beautifully and is the reason Europe are on top.

Simon Matthews: This is going to be one of the tightest games in ages! It is so tense that I cannot stop listening now!

  60. Dubuisson & McDowell v Fowler & Walker

    Europe 5 up after 9

    Clare Balding

BBC Radio 5 live commentator at Gleneagles

Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler haven't had anything go for them yet. No magic... they've been scoring bogies and double bogies.

Walker just missed a birdie chance at 9 to reduce the arrears but the Americans are flagging after three halved matches that have gone the distance so far.

  61. Dubuisson & McDowell v Walker & Fowler

    Europe 5 up after 9

Graeme McDowell and Victor Dubuisson of Europe

Victor Dubuisson and Graeme McDowell have turned for home five to the good against Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler. That is going to be a Houdini of an effort to get out of that armlock.

  62. Deer news

A deer runs across the 15th fairway

The deer at Gleneagles seem to have been running circuits of the course for the last two days. Another startled son of Bambi comes careering out of the undergrowth, sees a rowdy mass of golf fans bang in front and veers off in desperate search of cover.

  63. Post update

    Iain Carter

BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 live

We saw yesterday just how volatile this foursomes format can be, things can change in the blink of an eye. I think we'll see a lot of golf yet. Dubuisson and McDowell looks like a point for Europe but the other three matches could go either way.

  64. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 1 up after 13

    USA down

The United States were playing catch-up as soon as Patrick Reed planted his tee shot against the base of a tree on 13 and some solid dot-to-dot shooting from Europe ends with Justin Rose tapping in for a par and the hole. Back to one down for Europeans.

  65. Donaldson & Westwood v Johnson & Kuchar

    Europe 1 up after 14

    Europe down

Lee Westwood within a whisker of chipping in on 14...a real toe-curling, buttock-clencher of a chance there. He is made to rue the fine margins as well as Zach Johnson putts in from the apron to cut the deficit in the top match.

  66. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 10

Rory McIlroy makes good after Sergio Garcia's misreading of the 10th green, popping the pill down the hatch to ensure they sweep off to the 11th still one hole to the good.

  67. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 2 up after 11

Jordan Spieth's backswing is jammed up by a tree trunk on 12, but he makes good his escape with a punchy little stroke. Justin Rose is over Europe's second and plonks the ball on the back of the green.

  68. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 9

Sergio Garcia looks disgusted as though his ball has just located a loophole in the laws of physics on the 10th green. The ball stubbornly barged its way across the lino without bending to the expected break.

  69. Post update

    Rob Hodgetts

    BBC Sport at Gleneagles

"Sergio Garcia is munching a chocolate bar as partner Rory McIlroy sticks a sumptuous seven iron close on the ninth. The Spaniard just bursts out laughing and shakes his head as he walks over to give his behind a little pat. I'm sure cars slowed down on the nearby dual carriageway to watch that shot."

  70. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 2 up after 11

Patrick Reed holds his nerve on 11 to keep the American's lead out at two holes before rumbling a decent tee shot down the 12th.

  71. Dubuisson & McDowell v Walker & Fowler

    Europe 5 up after 8

    Europe up

Victor Dubuisson is rapidly heading for cult hero status. Graeme McDowell, after being uncoupled from Rory McIlroy this week, is loving being the Frenchman's sidekick and drains a putt on the eighth to reduce Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler to a speck in the rear-view mirror.

  72. Post update

  75. Post update

    Cheers Ben.

The United States led 10-6 after the first two days of the 2012 Ryder Cup. It took a Miracle for Europe to turn that around.

Tom Watson's side are slowly getting painted into a similarly tight corner in the foursomes.

As it stands, Europe are heading for a 9½-6½ lead going into the final day. Let's see if that is how it pans out...

  76. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 9

Garcia's long putt has a look at nine and McIlroy has about two feet left. Walker and Fowler in all sorts of bother in the bottom match, they look like they're about to go five down to Dubuisson and McDowell. Mahan with a great saver at nine, magnificent spunk to stay in touch with Garcia and McIlroy. That's me, here's Mike Henson...

  77. Post update

McIlroy cuts one in from the left at nine, dreamy shot, while Mahan was forced to lay up from the rough. Furyk is safely on in three but Garcia has a shot in hand. Kaymer right at the flag at 11, Reed is firing out of the rough and he only just makes it over the water guarding the green...

  78. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    US 2 up after 10

Johnson into the 12th and it's long. Dubuisson and McDowell remain four up through seven after a rare half. Over on 10, here's Spieth for birdie and he's made another one disappear, the kid is machine-like at the moment, churning out clutch putts like a candy machine. Rose blinks, that match slipping away from Europe...

    Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garica

"All very friendly in the Rory McIlroy match, but no less competitive for it. Sergio Garcia and Jim Furyk have a right old laugh about whose turn it is to play first.

"Phil Mickelson, rested today, and European vice-captain Miguel Angel Jimenez are also gassing away at the back. Big VIP presence at this one, too.

"Captains Paul McGinley and Tom Watson, several other vice captains from each side, Rory's mum and dad, Amy Mickelson, assorted other wives and family. Two liveried buggies for each team. There are more people inside the ropes than some tournaments have spectators."

Looking at the various state of the matches now I think Europe will have a good foursomes session. It would be nice to have a two or three point lead going into the singles.

  81. Rose & Kaymer v Spieth & Reed

    US 1 up after 9

    Europe up

Reed misses a shortish putt at nine, Rose and Kaymer back in the conversation in that one. Kaymer continues the momentum with a dream of a tee shot at 10, only for Reed to almost get inside him.

  82. McIlroy & Garcia v Johnson & Kaymer

    Europe 1 up after 8

Rose chipping on at nine, that was actually pretty makeable but he left it a couple of feet short. Donaldson pulls out the big dog on 12 and finds the bunker. McIlroy and Garcia halve the eighth, stay one up, the Spaniard doing the nasty work courtesy of a four-footer.

  83. Donaldson & Westwood v Johnson & Kuchar

    Europe 2 up after 11

Westwood makes a fine clutch putt to halve the 11th, Europe two ahead with seven to go in that match. Garcia with a fine escape at eight, every time I look up either he or McIlroy is in some sort of scrape.

  84. Post update

Anyone know what the biggest comeback is in Ryder Cup history, in terms of an individual match? Let me know. Johnson taking an age over his 12-footer on 11, even Kuchar looks bored, but all that love and care paid off and he made birdie. Europe can still halve it, though...

  85. Dubuisson & McDowell v Walker & Fowler

    Europe 4 up after 6

    Europe up

Fowler stalking his crucial birdie putt on six. Walker left him miles out but he does a pretty good job cosieing it up towards the hole. Still, McDowell has a five-footer for the hole and a four-hole lead. McDowell bends it in, Walker and Fowler are getting a pasting.

  86. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 7

Fine saving putt from McIlroy at seven, Europe retain their lead in match three. Dubuisson on tee at the par-three sixth - what a shot that is, Victor Dubuisson is currently the hottest cold thing in the whole wide world.

  87. Donaldson & Westwood v Johnson & Kuchar

    Europe 2 up after 10

    Europe up

Cheeky little bump and run from Sergio at seven, and seeing a bump and run nowadays is like seeing a red squirrel. Donaldson wins the hole for Europe at 10, daylight between the Europeans and Americans in that top match.

Walker with a par putt from eight feet at five but he pulls it straight off the bat, that's that pairing's third bogey so far and Dubuisson makes them pay, that match trickling away from the Americans. Johnson from sand at 10 and that's pretty cute, although he doesn't seem to like it. That's the problem with modern golfers, they want the moon on a stick.

Being at the Ryder Cup, with all its hype and history, is like walking in a bubble, but occasionally it feels like you've left Disneyland by the side door and nipped around the back. The fifth is the quietest part of the course, and barring the players' entourage, could easily just be the venue for a pleasant afternoon foursomes match among the fallen leaves of an autumn afternoon.

  96. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 6

Furyk putting from the fringe of the sixth green... NAILED IT! Tremendous stuff from Furyk after a stellar tee shot by McIlroy, all the pressure now on Garcia... well done Sergio, no problems with that one, and the love-in begins again...

  97. Post update

Kaymer with a horror shot at seven, his ball above his feet on the bank of a bunker, but he at least manages to hack it over the back of the green. Johnson with his third into the ninth, Zach likes to take his time. Bit long, up on the top ridge.

  98. Post update

Mahan on the sixth tee, wind gusting off the right, but that's right at the flag and a very good shot. McIlroy's is better, though, pitched it at the front and scuttled it up towards the hole. Garcia and McIlroy are very tactile, I sense the Spaniard needs the love of a strong partner.

  108. Kaymer & Rose v Spieth & Reed

    Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy

Ian Poulter struggled alongside Rory McIlroy this morning before rediscovering some Medinah magic to help secure a half at the end against Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler. So what's it like playing with McIlroy?

"Well, when he hits it 350 down the middle, he's kind of useful," added Poulter. "He's a great guy. He's full of energy. He's extremely fit and energetic. I thought I walked fast, but he was trying to walk past me today, which never normally happens. It was nice to have someone striding right by my side.

"I mean, I'm always past my caddie, so I'm kind of normally walking on my own. What more can you say when you've got the world number one playing with you. It's a huge help."

  114. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 1 up after 3

Kuchar with his approach at seven and that's a peach, leaving Johnson with a short one for birdie. Donaldson can only scuttle his ball up there, advantage Americans. 117. Post update

McIlroy playing from the rough again, he must be getting a bit sick of this, and he can only find sand. Mahan is in a crater and can only hack out onto the fairway. Over on four, Rose is chipping out of the rough and he races his ball quite some way past the hole.

  118. Donaldson & Westwood Johnson & Kuchar

  121. McIlroy & Garcia v Furyk & Mahan

    Europe 2 up after 2

    Europe up

Back at six, Kuchar finds sand off the tee and Europe are very much in the box seat. Over on two, McIlroy races his eagle effort by but Mahan squeezes his par putt right of the hole - unforgivable on a par five - to hand Europe the hole.

  122. Post update

Donaldson on tee at 6, it's a par-three, 211 yards. Donaldson is very handsy at times but this is a corker, giving Westwood a 12-foot putt back down the hill. Dubuisson on one and that's a crackerjack second, leaving McDowell with a very makeable birdie putt...

  123. Post update

Reed is playing his second miles off piste but he's somehow managed to blacksmith his ball to the edge of the green. That looked like a man trying to take out a rabid dog that was attacking him. Not much finesse, plenty of brute strength.

    Victor Dubuisson

McGinley, talking to Sky Sports on the first tee: "That half point was huge. Their comeback today wasn't a surprise, historically there's always a reaction to a heavy defeat in a previous session. Ian (Poulter) produced again when we needed him and that half was huge for this morning.

  127. Post update

Mahan off the tee at the long second and we think that's just short of the bunker. Back at the first it's time for some mystery, entirely based on the fact a Frenchman who doesn't say much and doesn't speak very good English anyway has walked to the tee. Rickie Fowler gets his drive safely away and it's Graeme McDowell, rather than Victor Dubuisson, who gets chocs away for Europe, and that's a doozy...

Spieth for birdie at the second but that's a misread and Rose has a chance for the win... he's had two sighters now, missed both of them, and Reed halves the hole.

  131. Post update

Mahan with his second into the first, having to clip one out of the rough. Out of the frying pan and into the fire, green-side bunker. McIlroy has got a bit of wind in the face but what's wind when you hit the ball like billyoh, he's stuck that right into the heart of the green.

  132. Donaldson & Westwood v Johnson & Kuchar

    All square after 3

Donaldson has drained a monster on three! The Welsh rookie is loving this, but that's a great clutch putt by Kuchar for the half. There is some suggestion that today could be the most under par day in Ryder Cup history, although it's only a suggestion and I haven't really got time to find out for sure.

  133. Post update

Furyk away first at the first... he looks hawkishly after his ball before stooping and retrieving his peg, happy that it's a job done well. Garcia had a bit of trouble with his driver yesterday and he's found rough off the first this afternoon. However, he's not in a lot of bother, or at least McIlroy isn't.

  134. Post update

Back at the first, McIlroy and Garcia (who, incidentally, has been upgraded from 'useless' to 'lousy' by Sir Nick Faldo) are greeted by huge cheers, and they've been pitted against Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan, who played some pretty spectacular golf together this morning.

  135. Kaymer & Rose v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 1

Spieth with a cute chip at the first and the wind is really getting up at Gleneagles, tugging away at trousers and making swinging the club more difficult. Rose finally misses one, his eight-footer sliding off to the right, and Reed makes his for the half.

Caddie Billy Foster, Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood of Europe

Reed playing from the rough, he's got 168 yards to the pin... leaves it a touch short, looks like the wind got that. Kaymer with 128 yards from the middle and he makes the most of his advantage, stiffing one to within 10 feet. To the third, Kuchar leaks his approach and his ball lips out of a sprinkler head. Donaldson from the white stuff... and back into more white stuff...

  137. Post update

Westwood on tee at the par-four third and he's found the sand out right. Zach Johnson will be looking to make amends for his errant approach at two and he does just that, that's about as no-nonsense as you could get, right in the middle of the fairway.

    Europe up

Donaldson and Westwood did indeed win the second after Johnson's par putt lipped out. Big row on the first as the boys get ready to thump a couple of drives down there, it's Jordan Spieth to give it some humpty first...

  141. Post update

    Europe's Justin Rose tees off

At the second, Kuchar pops on in four after Johnson found the pond in two, here's Donaldson with a big, swinging putt which is respectable rather than great. Rose and Kaymer make their way to the first, they're up against the US's roaring rookie pairing Spieth and Reed. Spieth and Reed have gone through this Ryder Cup like a twister, leaving opponents chewed up and twisted like so much scrap metal. Or something like that.

  142. Origins of 'dormie'

Ever wanted to know where the term 'dormie' comes from? Thought not, but because we have a bit of a lull, I'm going to tell you anyway. One explanation is that it is a corruption of the French word 'dormir', meaning to sleep, the theory being that since a player who is 'dormie' can no longer lose the match, he can now relax, or 'go to sleep'. All of what I just wrote might be a load of old nonsense but I've got to write something.

Superb golf all morning and as we tally up the scorecard, Tom Watson's men have repaired some of the damage sustained yesterday.

The score stands at 6½-5½ in Europe's favour.

  154. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 17

All of which means that Rickie Fowler is lining up a 20-foot putt to win the match, anything less than in and we are sharing the point.

It's on it's way, it's on it's way.... no legs and it has wandered off line as well.

  155. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 17

    Here comes the fightback!

Ian Poulter takes a look at the flags and sticks his approach to within five feet, Rory McIlroy coaxes the ball out of the weeds and cosies it up to within a couple of feet.

  156. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 17

Rickie Fowler sits back on his knees and grimaces, but his mid-air commands do the trick, the ball just about carrying the greenside bunker and skipping onto the dancefloor for an ambitious eagle chance and a very makeable birdie possibility.

That puts Europe on their heels and it is going to have to be a real rearguard action now as Rory McIlroy pumps right and sends his ball into some ugly rough.

  157. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 17

Ian Poulter has escaped with a decent lie out on the left of the fairway and has punched out of some clingy rough towards the front of the green. He is not looking too bad there considering that opening effort.

  158. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 17

Ian Poulter is leaning left and issuing instructions to take cover as soon as he hits his tee shot. That is out somewhere in the Scottish jungle.

These closing holes are well made for Rory McIlroy though and he thumps it long and true down the middle.

Rickie Fowler swats right, just off the fairway but Jimmy Walker is central, a Costantino Rocca glory putt back from the Northern Irishman.

  159. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 17

    18th (Dun Roamin')

    Hole 18

  160. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 17

    Rickie Fowler of the US

Those putts might have been out towards seven or eight feet on reflection. Rickie Fowler made it look a lot shorter though, stepping up and shooting into the heart of the hole after his team-mate had missed to crank up the pressure on his young shoulders.

All square and to the 18th. Blood and thunder, death or glory, here we go.

  161. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 16

Rory McIlroy, putter in hand, is sturdy under the pressure, curling his attempt just short. That is conceded by the Americans so Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler have five-footers to halve the hole. Either will do for them...

  162. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 16

A bit of a duffer from Ian Poulter as he gets underneath his scoop out of the rough. The ball makes it onto the green, but dropping from a height, there is no run and he will struggle to get down from there.

  163. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 16

Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler are solid, but not spectacular as they leave themselves tricky eight-footers with their rescue attempts. Europe to play...

Lee Norman from Hove: Well I was going to make a joke about Rory McIlroy hurting his back after carrying Ian Poulter all morning. But then Poulter pitches in on the 15th brilliantly. Let's hope that sparks him into life.

  165. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after 16

The gremlins are getting into all four players. Rickie Fowler sends his tee shot plunging off the back into a bunker, Ian Poulter and Jimmy Walker are in greenside rough, with Rory McIlroy the only man with a decent lie. He has a little uphill bump from the fringe.

    Hole 17

    Par three, 194 yards

Slightly downhill with plenty of bunkers left, right and at the back. Because of a ridge running across the middle of the green, it is a difficult up and down from the bunker on the right.

    Europe up

The Americans are there for the taking and it's Ian Poulter who takes the scalp.

He drops his putt from ten feet, allowing McIlroy to pick up his from five, sparking another bout of Tarzan celebrations.

All square, two holes to go. Is Poulter coming to the boil just as the glory beckons?

  168. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

Rory McIlroy dribbles his chip up to within five feet.

  169. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    US 1 up after 15

    Goodness gracious me.

Rickie Fowler absolutely butchers a little pitch and run with his second, taking a dirty great sod of turf and only the top half of the ball.

His shot runs about a sixth of the distance intended. As he looks accusingly at the ground, it is advantage Europe.

  170. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    US 1 up after 15

Jimmy Walker fluffs his third into another bunker. Ian Poulter might still have a say in the outcome of this one though, landing up towards the pin to give Rory McIlroy a little insurance.

Rickie Fowler does not have that luxury.

  173. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

Jimmy Walker and Ian Poulter both make their way back onto the turf, but they are the chorus line on this hole with Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy going mano-o-mano.

Captain Tom [Watson] was asking for a little red on the board, he'd got tired of seeing so much blue."

  176. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    US 1 up after 15

Ian Poulter, adrenaline swilling round his system, lashes his drive on the par-five 16, but he has over-reached himself, yanking into the fairway bunker off to the left.

This tee-shot is all about Rory McIlory though. He steps up like a Victorian strongman on a Test Your Strength fairground stall and rings the bell with a monster.

He is 20 yards further up the high street than Rickie Fowler. Jimmy Walker has cosied up to Ian Poulter in the sand.

That has been a long time brewing! Ian Poulter pumps the air with both fists, bulges his eyeballs and roars to the heavens. His chip from just short of the greenside bunker and a good 50 yards from the pin has disappeared down the drain for an improbable birdie.

Extraordinary and probably the moment of the day so far...

  181. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    US 1 up after 14

Rory McIlroy has marmalised his drive on 15, the Scottish air ripped in two by his ball as it soars out towards the horizon.

Ian Poulter is a good 20 yards back from that and his approach is snared by a greenside bunker. He was a lion in Medinah. He has been a pussycat around Gleneagles so far.

Apparently Patrick Reed's college golf team found him a difficult, almost impossible, guy to play with, despite his obvious talent.

Well, Jordan Spieth seems to be enjoying the ride. The American rookies make it two points from two as Thomas Bjorn's little wedge from off the green slides by to bring the match to a close.

"Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson set a new Ryder Cup record of 12 under for a fourball match in their thrilling win over Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar. The 21 under collective score for both sides - another record - shows the Americans were in similarly scintillating form.

"The electricity started sparking at the eighth green as Rose made a birdie to get back to level after trailing by two after six. The charge quickly built and spread among the swelling gallery as birdie after birdie dropped from the putters of both sides.

"When Stenson's curling 20-footer took the Europeans ahead for the first time on the 12th, the roar thundered around the glens and the Swede pumped his fist like a pneumatic drill. Rose, quickly becoming Europe's new Ryder Cup talisman, added another on 13 and sealed an absorbing match on 16."

The way these US two have putted this afternoon, it's been an exhibition. If one has missed the other's been there. Hunter's been the main man today. I'd keep him out on the course this afternoon and maybe pair him with someone with a little more firepower.

That is the good news for Europe.

Behind the top pair though, things don't look so clever. With Donaldson and Westwood and Bjorn and Kaymer well down, Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter also slip below the rising tide of red.

Jimmy Walker's long, meandering putt on 13 finally finds its way home and, with Rory McIlroy having squirted past and Poulter bang out of form, that is the Americans ahead for the first time in the last match.

  208. Bjorn & Kaymer v Reed & Spieth

    US 2 up after 12

Martin Kaymer brings out a wood for a little clump onto the green off the apron on 12. Perfectly weighted, but his effort trails just wide to come to a halt next to the hole.

Jordan Spieth, also just off the putting surface, will have a chance to improve on that. If this goes in the United States are three to the good. It looks locked on three feet out, but a late break as the ball's pace dies does for the youngster.

Justin Rose of Europe celebrates his birdie putt on the 10th hole

What a ding-donger this is at the top of the scoreboard.

Justin Rose sinks another whopper, Matt Kuchar has already done something similar and both pairs are seven under through 11.

    Suffocatingly good golf.

  241. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    Europe 1 up after eight

    Europe up

Are we back on script? Rory McIlroy puts away a longish birdie putt on eight and after a torrid first day in which he had to scrap for a half, he has put himself and Ian Poulter one up.

More like what we are expecting from the world number one.

  242. Donaldson & Westwood v Furyk & Mahan

    US 3 up after nine

Lee Westwood gets his toes sandy and enjoys his trip to the beach, chipping close. Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan have been in electric form though, the latter draining a long-range putt, closing the door and preserving a three-hole lead.

  243. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kuchar

    All square after 10

Justin Rose's second on 11. And it is an absolute pearler. Two hops, up on the green and it settles within five feet.

    All square after eight

    Bernard Gallacher

Three-time European Ryder Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

This is when the tactics go wrong. I'm not sure about this, I think Ian Poulter should have putted first there.

Poulter missed a birdie chance from 30 feet having asked McIlroy to go first from six feet, which the world number one missed. Both Americans missed their birdie putts too to remain all square.

  246. Bjorn & Kaymer v Reed & Spieth

    All square after eight

Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed's frat-boy outing to Scotland is still going pretty swimmingly. The American rookies are more than holding their own. Spieth taps in on eight to keep it all square.

Flags of Europe, Ireland and USA sprout up on long poles held above the massed ranks, attention focused now on the green as the first group does its thing on the dance floor before exiting stage left. Time for a chat and then, like the dust of a stagecoach thundering through the west, the next group and its entourage pour down the hill from our right.

  249. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kuchar

    All square after 10

    Justin Rose of Europe

Doff your caps. Justin Rose is weaving magic out there.

Another putt from the fringes, and this one sinks for a birdie on the par-three 10. The gallery roar in delight, Rose accepts with a raised fist.

Suddenly Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar, from sitting pretty, are suddenly wobbling. Watson with a copper-bottomed clutch putt salvages the American challenge and they march off all square.

  250. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after seven

Rory McIlroy can't find the putt to compliment the approach, nuzzling, but not sealing the deal from six feet or so.

Ian Poulter's putt is a far dicier chance and also stays north.

Which means that Rickie Fowler has a putt from further out than Rory, but closer in than Poults to win the hole.

Nope, the American's putter runs cold again and we are even stephens off seven.

  251. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kuchar

    All square after nine

Justin Rose has a eagle putt from the apron to try and win the ninth for Europe. It has to cross chasms and mountains, but almost finds its way, fading just wide. Hole halved.

  252. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after six

Jimmy Walker has found a fairway bunker on seven, but makes a good escape up onto the green. Rickie Fowler bashes his appoach a little closer.

Over to you Europe. Rory McIlroy with a nice angle into the green. He likes it, the gallery likes it, I'm quite keen as well. The ball bites on landing to leave him with a five foot putt back up the slope for birdie.

  253. 7th (Larch Gait)

    Par four, 468 yards

    Hole seven

An elevated tee shot plays into a valley, with a big dogleg right. The green slopes from right-to-left, making it difficult for the approach shot to hold.

  254. Donaldson & Westwood v Furyk & Mahan

    US 3 up after eight

Hunter Mahan slips his shades upwards and gets his terminator-eyes out to read a putt on on eight. Calculations done he slides it home from 10 feet.

Rookie Jamie Donaldson has looked at home in all his matches so far though and stays solid over a testy little five-footer to halve the hole.

He and Lee Westwood still have three holes to find though...

  255. Post update

All square in three of the matches, the Americans leading on eight though. Jamie Donaldson is trying to make inroads into their three-hole lead with a gutsy approach.

Justin Rose has uncorked an absolute fizzer on nine to put his ball on the green and him and Henrik Stenson in control on nine. That was out of the sickliest of sweet spots.

  259. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

    All square after six

Rory McIlroy gets the nod from Ian Poulter to take his putt first on the sixth green and the world number one does the disappearing trick, making the little white pill vanish down the drain.

That has put the thumbscrews on Rickie Fowler. The American, jittery on recent putts, is back in the groove though. Smooth as silk for 15ft, the ball drops and the hole is halved.

"As Westwood settles over his putt for a half, a flight of geese in v-formation fly overhead, their squawks sounding like a tape player on fast forward. 261. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

Rory McIlroy, welcome to the party. The Northern Irishman arrows one straight at the flag and is up to within eight feet for a pot-shot at a birdie. He strides down the fairway with a Cheshire Cat grin.

  268. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kuchar 1 UP

  269. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowler

Birdie chance for America as Fowler finds the green with his second on five. Jimmy Walker follows him in, but is in even better shape, as he secures a guaranteed birdie with a brilliant approach.

With both McIlroy and Poulter in trouble, that match will surely be all square in a minute.

  270. Bjorn & Kaymer v Reed & Spieth

    Europe 1 up after five

A horrible tee shot from Reed is well off radar on the par-three sixth leaving him an impossible looking chip with his second. Jordan Spieth responds to the pressure though with a tee shot onto the green.

Thomas Bjorn tells a cameraman to keep quiet before firing his iron off the tee into the rough on the tight. I don't fancy his chances of getting up and down in two from there. Kaymer fares little better as he pulls his tee shot into the bunker on the left. Advantage America here.

Walker follows his partner to within 10 feet of the flag to leave the Americans with two good birdie chances.

Whereas in reality he's an extravagantly gifted millionaire with a house the size of a cruise liner. Who's laughing now?"

  319. Bjorn & Kaymer v Reed & Spieth

American debutants Reed and Spieth can count themselves very unlucky to have sat out yesterday afternoon's foursomes after a fine win on their Ryder Cup debut yesterday morning.

Skipper Tom Watson admitted he may have made a mistake, although Reed's tee shot isn't the most convincing as he gets more air than distance to leave himself a mammoth second shot.

Jim Furyk sends an iron soaring onto the first green pin high. Another early birdie chance for the US. Westwood fails to respond from the rough, overshooting the green and over the back into some thick stuff.

No problems for Hunter Mahan who follows his teammate's approach to about 10 feet from the hole, while Donaldson also misses the dance floor. Good start for the Americans.

Former England rugby international Will Greenwood: "Golf's supposed to be a nice, quiet, sedate sport and here the boys are singing, entertaining and serenading each player, and they're supposed to control their heart rate. Most of the players are sports fans though and I think most of them are jealous about other athletes getting to play in noisy arenas. This is their opportunity."

  324. Donaldson & Westwood v Furyk & Mahan

    European fans

A brilliant atmosphere back on the first tee as Lee Westwood is greeted by chants of his name to Beatles songs. It wasn't the best it has to be said.

Westwood the only one to miss the fairway as he finds the rough on the left.

  325. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kuchar

    US 1 up after one

    USA up

Great start for the US as Kuchar holes from about 10 feet and Rose just misses his putt to the left. The first time Rose and Stenson have been behind in this year's Ryder Cup.

  326. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kuchar

Henrik Stenson misses his birdie putt on one, leaving Rose and Kuchar to battle it out for the point. Both have very makeable birdie chances.

  327. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kuchar

    Justin Rose of Europe

Anything you can do I can do better.

Justin Rose recovers from a dodgy lie in the rough to land inside Kuchar's approach on the green. Brilliant from Rose. Bubba Watson is probably out of this hole after spinning off the green. Three decent approaches though.

  328. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kuchar

Henrik Stenson finds the green on the first from the sand, about 20 feet from the hole. Lovely stuff. Matt Kuchar responds with an even better approach and a decent birdie chance.

  329. 1st (Bracken Brae)

    Par four, 426 yards

    Hole one

Slightly downhill with a dogleg to the right. There is a narrow green protected by a bunker at the front and a grass hollow behind it.

  330. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kuchar

Ivor Robson introduces the pairings on the tee and we are off. Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson are safely away down the fairway for America.

Justin Rose finds the rough on the left and Henrik Stenson is in the sand on the right. Advantage the US.

"We're here for you Bubba!" yells an empathetic American voice on the first tee. Home support responds with the Justin Rose song to the tune of Spandau Ballet's Gold, and then a quick Henrik Stenson effort loosely but successfully based on compatriots' Abba's Thank You For the Music. Sir Tim Rice can rest easy."

Here we go again then. Europe's Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson look to continue where they left off yesterday - winning both of their matches - against Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson.

Rose and Stenson get a heroes reception from the gallery as they take to the tee, with both looking calm and collected ahead of another massive day.

Justin Rose's name is sung to the tune of Spandau Ballet's 'Gold'.

"Fans in good early voice in the stands around the first tee. A song about Rory McIlroy to the 12 Days of Christmas tune, including all standing on '5 McIlroys' does good business, sparking a little medley of old favourites such as 'ole, ole, ole' and 'One Ivor Robson'. The players, huddled under woolly hats in the crisp Scottish air, warm up on the range. As the creeping sun turns the tips of the Ochil Hills a salmon pink, the normally peaceful Scottish glen is ready to stage act two."

Some interesting pairings out there this morning, none more so than Rory McIlroy partnered with Ryder Cup talisman Ian Poulter.

'Poults' had an off day yesterday, losing his morning match and not playing in the afternoon session, while world number one McIlroy only picked up half a point from his two matches.

They play Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler in the last match off.

    Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson

"It was the European team who walked off the Centenary course all bounce and swagger last night after a stirring afternoon in which they failed to lose a single match, and it is the Europeans who are once again in full voice around the first tee this morning. The opening home pairing of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson looked indomitable on Friday, winning both fourballs and foursomes, and the two Florida neighbours will be keen to silence US big-dog Bubba and his partner Matt Kuchar once again."

    07:50 BST: Donaldson & Westwood v Furyk & Mahan

  342. Post update

Missed yesterday's action? Still not sure of your fourballs from your foursomes?

This morning's fourballs means each player has his own ball, with the best score taken. This afternoon's foursomes has each pair playing one ball between them, taking alternate strokes.

You'll notice that only eight men from each team are in action - four are on the sidelines, as chosen by the captain. This afternoon's foursome pairings will be out towards the end of the fourballs. On Sunday, all 12 men will take part in the singles.
