Poulter walks away with a double-bogey at 11, after his long-range bogey attempt lips out. The Englishman drops back to +1. The punchy Patrick Reed, playing with Ryder Cup rival Poulter, saves his par and stays level. News from the sixth is that McIlroy has made bogey after what I'm told was a fluffed chip. There is nothing more likely to warm the cockles of a weekend hacker than the world number one fluffing a chip...

Tremendous round so far from old Tom Watson, the champion in 1977 and 1981 is one under after 15 and still teaching the kids one or two things.

Camilo Villegas of Colombia has picked up shots at 12 and 13 and is two off the lead after 15. Villegas had two aces in yesterday's par-three tournament, so that birdie on 12 is less than surprising. Poulter is in seven shades of strife on 11 - hoicks out of the trees and straight into the drink.

    What: 505-yard par four

Why: Monstrously long. Tee shot to be threaded through corridor of trees. Skinny fairway. Slim green fenced off by water.

Those old Ryder Cup muckers Lee Westwood and Miguel Angel Jimenez are out in level par. Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, strongly tipped this week, is one under through seven.

Danny Willett of England, making his Masters debut, drained a monster, 64ft eagle putt at 13. He let one go at 14 but is still under par. Adam Scott, 2013 champion, has birdied eight and the Australian is one under par.

    Ben CrenshawImage source, Reuters

World number one and pre-tournament favourite Rory McIlroy has kicked off his campaign with four straight pars. Poor old Ben Crenshaw, winner in 1984 and 1995, is without his long-time caddie Carl Jackson today and is +7 through seven. Crenshaw has announced this will be his final Masters but Jackson is not feeling too well, although he hopes to be back on the bag tomorrow.

Phil Mickelson drawing in a big crowdImage source, Getty Images

"The Rory/Mickelson group drawing the biggest travelling crowds on this first morning, the seating areas around each green draining as the players leave and a stately scramble beginning for an advantageous viewing spot down the following fairway.

"Sticky hot already out there, dark patches spreading under arms and in the small of backs of those standing in the direct Georgia sunlight."

Hoffman is 38 and hails from Las Vegas, via San Diego. He has five pro wins overall, including three on the PGA Tour. His most recent win was the OHL Classic last November. Phil Mickelson, winner in 2004, 2006 and 2010, is fast out of the traps, he's picked up birdies at two and three and is two under after four.

    Vijay SinghImage source, EPA

Vijay Singh gets a lucky break at 13, his ball squirting right but not dribbling down into Rae's Creek. We have a very impressive early clubhouse leader - Charley Hoffman of the United States is in with a five-under-par 67, including five birdies and an eagle at 15.

    Bubba WatsonImage source, Getty Images

Another two-time champion Bubba Watson has birdied eight to move to two under par. England's Ian Poulter is back to two under after birdie at nine. I don't have many pics to write from, only the odd shot of Amen Corner, and here's Ben Crane somehow turning birdie into bogey at 13 and he's now +8. Augusta will take you to the cleaners if you're playing dirty golf.

Right, thank you Aimee Lewis, this is Ben Dirs for a few hours, and probably plenty more after that. Two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer is off in a minute, the German stalwart is playing with Austria's Bernd Wiesberger and Australia's former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy.

  17. Bad day for Clarke & Olazabalpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 9 April 2015

    McIlroyImage source, EPA

Tom Watson, one under after 12 holes, continues to defy age and time but other old-stagers aren't performing so well on those beautifully manicured lawns. Ian Woosnam has bogeyed the first hole, Darren Clarke is three over after 11 and Jose-Maria Olazabal is four over. A double bogey on the ninth adding salt to the wounds.

  18. Red rage on par fivespublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 9 April 2015

    Rory McIlroyImage source, Getty Images

Rory McIlroy escaped a tight spot on the second - but his antics on the opening par five don't bode well.

Last year he only played them to even par over the four days, eight shots worse than winner Bubba Watson who finished - you guessed it - eight shots clear of McIlroy.

But, away from Augusta, McIlroy loves a par five and in 2014 he ranked third behind Adam Scott and Charl Schwartzel by making birdie or better on 50.98 percent of his par-five holes during the season.

  19. Upcoming tee timespublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 9 April 2015
