Jenni, from Newtownards, Northern Ireland: It's time for the best four days of sport in the calendar year. Nothing can compete with the sights, sounds and sheer drama of the Masters. Bring it on!

Andrew: With the Tiger Woods circus rolling into town this week it has allowed Rory McIlroy to go about his business with a little more freedom than he would have expected a few weeks ago. This will be his year to wear the Green Jacket.

James Marshall: Nice to see the three wise men teeing off the Masters. Wonder who will do it in 30 years time? My three would be Woods, Mickelson and Faldo.

Three-time Masters winner Gary Player is grinning from ear-to-ear. Not surprising really after the 79-year-old known as Mr Fitness (looking svelte in his all-black Milk Tray Man outfit by the way) smashed his ceremonial drive down the middle on the first.

A list of golf grand slammers

For a place with a reputation somewhere between Fort Knox, Disneyworld and the Garden of Eden, there is much to take you by surprise at Augusta National.

There is the six-lane expressway a decent three-iron from the first tee, an on-course lunch of sandwich and coffee for £1.60, and a grassy plain between the eighth and 18th fairways so large it's as if founder Bobby Jones set his mint julep down on the blueprints and designed around it.

Into these tales of the unexpected comes a world number one who hopes to deliver exactly as his ranking predicts...

    * OFFICIAL STARTING KLAXON *

Well the starting klaxon would have gone off if this was Happy Gilmore. But it isn't - it's Augusta. So instead it is a hearty round of applause from the patrons (because they are not spectators) for the first group.

Charlie Hoffman pegs up first and lashes one down Tea Olive, followed a few seconds later by Brian Harman. Game on!

BBC Weatherman Simon King:, external "You'd have seen that there was some heavy rain in Augusta on Tuesday and the forecast for the next few days doesn't look very good either.

"On Thursday it'll be mostly dry with temps up to 31°C, but there is a small risk of a shower or isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon. The risk of showers and play stopping thunderstorms increases on Friday. These could develop from late morning onwards and the day will on the whole, be pretty cloudy with highs of around 30°C

"The risk of showers and thunderstorms increases even further by Saturday but then it'll all clear up by Sunday to leave a dry and cooler final day with highs of 25°C."

Arnold Palmer hooks to the left. Gary Player spanks down the fairway. Jack Nicklaus arches a looping fade into the Augusta sky. The packed galleries whoop and holler at all three heroes. The Masters has kicked off...

It is the fourth successive year the trio have started the tournament together. Palmer, 85, became an honorary starter in 2007, three years after his final Masters start. Nicklaus, 75, joined in 2010 and Player, 79, in 2012.

Actually I told a little fib. Charley Hoffman and Brian Harman aren't the first men to be strolling on to the first tee today. Nope, that honour falls to three pensioners. Not any three pensioners mind. Only Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. The three icons are about to hit the ceremonial tee shots - officially meaning the Masters has begun.

"Soft, balmy morning in Augusta, 24 C and climbing as the sun yawns and stretches. Already the polite queues of cars are growing on Washington Road, the sidewalks dotted with bleary-eyed yet hopeful punters all holding the same hand-written signs: WANTED - TWO TICKETS. They might be waiting an awful long time."

Can world number one Rory McIlroy stick his mitts on a first Green Jacket and become only the sixth man to win all four majors?

Will injury-hit Tiger Woods defy the ageing process and challenge for his 15th major success?

Is reigning champion Bubba Watson capable of becoming only the fourth man to defend his title? And will anyone help the big-hitter if he becomes embroiled in some car-park fisticuffs?, external

Augusta, Georgia. Population: 200,000. The birthplace of soul legend James Brown and wrestling hero Hulk Hogan.

For 51 weeks of the year, the international tourism market in this corner of south-west United States is sparse. For the other, it explodes into life quicker than Rory McIlroy's downswing.

Crowds of about 35,000 (although this is quite speculative as the Augusta bosses do not like to disclose accurate figures) flock to the famous course, with millions of other sports fans around the world glued to the action.

Why? Because they want to see which man awkwardly squeezes into the sport's most famous blazer, in front of hundreds of flashbulb lights at the side of the 18th green, on Sunday.
