J.B. Holmes tees off at 22:24pm BST at -1 and has paid tribute to his old man on Twitter:

He said: "Happy Father's Day to a great man & role model. Love you dad. Happy Father's Day to all the other dads out there."

His tee shot is a humdinger as well, splitting the fairway perfectly.

American Tony Finau is a big strapping lad who can belt the ball out of sight. And that counts for a lot around this marathon test.

He has birdied the first to move out of the six-strong group on one over up to level par.

BBC Five Live's Iain Carter is already making his predictions.

He said: "There is going to be a play off. The seven year itch, they come around every seven years, 2015, 2008, 2001, 1994."

    Well, hello!

Rory McIlroy knocks his tee shot to within a dozen feet on the par-three ninth.

It is a skittish downhill putt he has to contend with, but bury it and he is back to level par.

  6. McIlroy to +1published at 22:19 British Summer Time 21 June 2015

I'm still saying it is not on. But Rory McIlroy is sowing a few seeds of doubt.

The world number one is getting into his his groove and sinks another birdie putt on eight to limbo down to three under for the day and one over overall.

He has been playing better than his 54-hole total suggests, but his putter will need to be white hot to put real pressure on the leaders.

"There have been a lot of changes to the course and not what any of us expected. The last seven holes are going to be really exciting.

"So much is going to be able to happen. The 12th and 16th are driveable par fours, the 17th is a long par three and the 18th is a par five today. There are possible two and three shot swings on those holes."

Every day is Christmas day for the players at Chambers Bay as they wake up to find out what pin positions and pars the organisers have rigged up for them.

The trick they pulled on Friday was to swap the first from a par four to a par five while knocking the 18th down a shot to a par four.

It was expected that they might do the same today, but after heavy criticism from the players - including Jordan Spieth being caught on the on-course microphones calling it "dumb, dumb dumb", external - they have kept the first as a par four and the last as a par five.

I watched Chris Kirk's 10 on the first and he should be embarrassed for saying that. He played the wrong shot, the wrong shot, the wrong shot, the wrong shot, the wrong shot and then the right shot. This isn't a parkland course where you pitch on to the green. It's not the USGA's fault, it's Chris Kirk's fault.

  10. More from Chris Kirkpublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 21 June 2015

The American said the USGA should be "ashamed" after he finished +21 for the tournament and carded a sextuple bogey on the first.

He added: "My score has nothing to do with why I feel that way, I played poorly. The course wasn't overly difficult, just tricked up."

    They are starting to drop...

Rory McIlroy sees a birdie putt disappear south at the par-four seven, but only after it teasingly teetered back and forth on the lip.

He is two over. But surely, surely there are too many men above him with too many shots in hand for him to be in with even a sniff...

American Chris Kirk finished +21 for the tournament with an eight-over-par 78 and props up the field in last place.

The 30-year-old started the final round with a sextuple bogey 10 on the par-four first.

Kirk had five attempts chipping from the edge of the green towards the pin, each time seeing the ball roll back towards his feet and it's fair to say the man from Tennessee is less than happy.

He said: "The US Open is a great tournament with incredible history. The USGA should be ashamed of what they did to it this week."

Strong stuff and good on him for saying it as he sees it.

Rory McIlroy reckons he missed seven makeable putts on the back nine alone yesterday.

His putter is still going the right way to being bent over his knee.

A birdie attempt from 15 feet on six stops just short, drawing oohs, ahhs and groans from the gallery.

Matt Kuchar, beginning the day on two over, is cursing his second shot on the first. In a very Matt Kuchar way though. "Shoot!" he exclaims. That is one of the big guns in his vocabulary arsenal.

Some more low scores being clocked up out there. American Morgan Hoffmann - who has not broken par in his previous three rounds - has come home in a four-under 66 for a five under finish.

Geoff Ogilvy has splattered his card with birdies. Six of the blighters in total on his way to four under for the day and he has only played 13 holes.

Two of the four leaders as been caught on camera making their way into Chambers Bay and there was some pretty commanding body language as they did so.

Dustin Johnson looks cool, calm, focused, sporting a nice pair of light grey slacks.

Branden Grace stopped to share a laugh and joke with the television guys.

No sign of Jordan Spieth or Jason Day as yet.
