Right then, get to bed people, tomorrow will be a late one.

    leaderboard

You may see major hat-trick if Spieth produces. You may see the 'no major' tag shed by Jason Day. You may see redemption for Branden Grace after his near miss at the US Open. A British winner in Justin Rose? Or Martin Kaymer owning Whistling Straits, as he did the last time this event was played here.

Thank you for all your interactions today and come back tomorrow. We'll go live early in the evening.

    Is DJ being overly optimistic?

At least the big hitter won't have the same level of scrutiny he has endured when failing from the front in the past. But six shots? It's going to take a big display from him or an unforeseen stinker from Jason Day. Johnson will play with Matt Jones tomorrow.

Jones led by two at the start of round three and now trails by five. His sleep may not be nightmare-free tonight.

Leader Jason Day - on 15 under - talks to Sky sports: "Overall I'm very pleased with the way I came back on the back side. The putter was rolling today which was great.

"I feel good about everything. I played great all three rounds and I've just got to keep pushing. Give it 100% tomorrow. I'm going to go and work the irons tonight but I feel really confident in my ability to stay patient with myself."

  5. 'In striking distance'published at 01:30 British Summer Time 16 August 2015

Justin Rose - on 12 under - speaks to Sky Sports: "I made some good swings down the stretch. I thought I played really well coming in today, it was a shame to make bogey on 18.

"Other than that I played really well and I got within striking distance tomorrow.

"there are always putts that burn the edge but I feel confident, like I'm going to make putts. I believe tomorrow will be breezy.

"I think I was in the same position at Merron (where he won the US Open in 2013), in the second or third group and won by two. All you're asking for is a chance on Sunday."

Jason Day, 12 feet for a lead of three... confident stroke... looks good...yep... no. My word that was close. It kissed the lip of the cup.

Day is in for par then, Matt Jones has collapsed, dropping four shots in three holes.

What a final few hours we just watched. Surely, surely the winner comes from the last group tomorrow.

Spieth v Day. Who is your man?

What we do know already is the final group on Sunday will be Jason Day and Jordan Spieth.

    Mouth-watering.

But can Day lead by three. Here comes his put...

And so we have one group left on the course. What a shot by Jason Day? From 168 yards he gets pin high and has 12 feet for a three-shot lead overnight.

Jason Day's reaction to that birdie putt on 17 was most unlike him. Both fists clenched and a yelp to the heavens. He loved it.

Justin Rose was not so pleased with his second at 18, he's short of the green on this 520-yard monster and chips up to 10 feet. This to stay two back... it's a big one... no one wants to finish badly... yuck. He's fuming.

Remember David Lingmerth? Birdie machine at times this week but not a good day today. Playing with Rose he's good for just a three over round.

At 6ft 4 in, Tony Finau looks a gentle giant but his face is that of a man who wants to take a mallet to his golf ball and smash it into the ground.

Why? A bogey on 18 as a result of a missed three footer. What a pain. Birdies galore all day and a bogey-bogey finish.

Matt Jones could well be going through the spell which crushes his momentum and plagues his mind tomorrow. He hooked right on 17 - something you cannot do under any circumstance. Like Tony Finau before him, he couldn't chip up onto the green so a third shot sets up a bogey putt which he should nail.

Jason Day found the putting surface off the tee and with lake Michigan as his backdrop, matches the beauty of the water with a stunning putt from 25 feet. Timely.

    Jones. Wide. Double.

  13. 'I'll make enough to get it done'published at 01:05 British Summer Time 16 August 2015

Jordan Spieth reacts to his seven under par round: "At the beginning of the round I wasn't as aggressive and told myself 'it's time to start taking some chances'. In order to keep up with these leaders you have to make birdies.

"I knew the guys were under par early. I knew 10 through to 14 were all wedge opportunities so they would make more.

"The par saves on eight and nine were the keys to this round. I could have been one over but managed to shoot seven under.

"Tomorrow looks like it will be tougher conditions. We'll see what they bring, it's just about trying to limit the mistakes. If I can have a bogey-free round again I think I'll make enough putts to get it done."

  14. That's ugly!published at 00:57 British Summer Time 16 August 2015

As Jordan Spieth delivered, others around him made a dog's dinner of their respective holes.

I can't even begin to describe the levels of ugly Tony Finau found on 17. His ball was almost unplayable in a bunker but he managed to escape with bogey four.

What about the par five? A banker hole for Jason Day and Matt Jones. Not so as they both have a bit of bad luck around the green. Day struck his second well but found a nasty position in the fringe of the green, it's just par as his third leaves too much of a putt.

Jones is officially wobbling and makes bogey on the easiest hole on the course.

    Jordan Spieth

    HE CAN!

What a perfect hole of golf. The full 303 yard drive was straight, the approach from a long way back was stellar and the putt perfect.

Jordan Spieth has just landed a blow and the unlikely hat-trick of majors is well on. The galleries loved that. What a roar.

  16. What a shot!published at 00:48 British Summer Time 16 August 2015

Jordan Spieth is stealthy isn't he? He ticked along all day and lays down a charge late on, just as Matt Jones and Jason Day wobble - albeit slightly.

Spieth takes on 18 - the hardest hole on the course this week - to leave 12 foot for birdie and the chance to move within a stroke.

Remember, only two men have won three majors in a year. For now.

  17. Birdiepublished at 00:46 British Summer Time 16 August 2015

The shots now seem to take on another level of significance as the jostling for a major-winning position on Sunday becomes more and more intense.

Not the time for Tony Finau to pull his tee shot on 17 then. He will have to chip up a cliff on this par three. Justin Rose has an eagle effort on 16 but it's so far from the cup he is practically stood in another state. Brilliant effort though and birdie from 10 inches. One back Justin. One back.

Matt Jones and Jason DayImage source, Getty Images

Jason Day, a 27-year-old from Beaudesert, Queensland, has some serious major pedigree - in only 19 major starts, he has six top-five finishes, nine top-10 finishes and 14 top-30 finishes. Fellow Aussie Matt Jones, 35 and from Sydney, has only played in seven majors over six years, has missed three cuts and has a best finish of tied for 30th, at this year's Open. Who's your money on?

  20. That's incredible!published at 00:40 British Summer Time 16 August 2015

Key moment. Key moment. Jason Day rattles only the face of the bunker and watches his ball roll back to his feet, now he's struggling for bogey, let alone par.

Up ahead on 16, Jordan Spieth for birdie... boom. Talk about a predator, he timed that in a devastating way.

Back to Day, he has 25 feet for bogey, nope. It is a double and the field grasp the Australian in a little. Matt Jones is level with Day now... no he's not... makes bogey himself with a nervy looking putt.
