  1. Goodnight

Right then, get to bed people, tomorrow will be a late one.

    leaderboard

You may see major hat-trick if Spieth produces. You may see the 'no major' tag shed by Jason Day. You may see redemption for Branden Grace after his near miss at the US Open. A British winner in Justin Rose? Or Martin Kaymer owning Whistling Straits, as he did the last time this event was played here.

Thank you for all your interactions today and come back tomorrow. We'll go live early in the evening.

  2. 'I'm back in this'

    D Johnson -9

    Is DJ being overly optimistic?

    Dustin Johnson

At least the big hitter won't have the same level of scrutiny he has endured when failing from the front in the past. But six shots? It's going to take a big display from him or an unforeseen stinker from Jason Day. Johnson will play with Matt Jones tomorrow.

Jones led by two at the start of round three and now trails by five. His sleep may not be nightmare-free tonight.

  3. Post update

    Day -15 (18), Spieth -13 (18)

Well... you think we may have a good finish?

    PGA.COM
  4. 'I feel good about everything'

    Day -15 (18)

    Jason Day

Leader Jason Day - on 15 under - talks to Sky sports: "Overall I'm very pleased with the way I came back on the back side. The putter was rolling today which was great.

"I feel good about everything. I played great all three rounds and I've just got to keep pushing. Give it 100% tomorrow. I'm going to go and work the irons tonight but I feel really confident in my ability to stay patient with myself."

  5. 'In striking distance'

    Rose -12 (18)

Justin Rose - on 12 under - speaks to Sky Sports: "I made some good swings down the stretch. I thought I played really well coming in today, it was a shame to make bogey on 18.

"Other than that I played really well and I got within striking distance tomorrow.

"there are always putts that burn the edge but I feel confident, like I'm going to make putts. I believe tomorrow will be breezy.

"I think I was in the same position at Merron (where he won the US Open in 2013), in the second or third group and won by two. All you're asking for is a chance on Sunday."

  6. Post update

    Day -15 (18), Jones -10 (18)

Jason Day, 12 feet for a lead of three... confident stroke... looks good...yep... no. My word that was close. It kissed the lip of the cup.

Day is in for par then, Matt Jones has collapsed, dropping four shots in three holes.

What a final few hours we just watched. Surely, surely the winner comes from the last group tomorrow.

Spieth v Day. Who is your man?

  7. Post update

    Spieth -13 (18), Day -15 (17)

What we do know already is the final group on Sunday will be Jason Day and Jordan Spieth.

    Mouth-watering.

But can Day lead by three. Here comes his put...

  9. Post update

    Day -15 (17), Jones -10 (17)

And so we have one group left on the course. What a shot by Jason Day? From 168 yards he gets pin high and has 12 feet for a three-shot lead overnight.

  10. Bogey

    Rose -12 (18), Lingmerth -4 (18)

Jason Day's reaction to that birdie putt on 17 was most unlike him. Both fists clenched and a yelp to the heavens. He loved it.

Justin Rose was not so pleased with his second at 18, he's short of the green on this 520-yard monster and chips up to 10 feet. This to stay two back... it's a big one... no one wants to finish badly... yuck. He's fuming.

Remember David Lingmerth? Birdie machine at times this week but not a good day today. Playing with Rose he's good for just a three over round.

  11. Bogey

    Finau -10 (18)

    Tony Finau

At 6ft 4 in, Tony Finau looks a gentle giant but his face is that of a man who wants to take a mallet to his golf ball and smash it into the ground.

Why? A bogey on 18 as a result of a missed three footer. What a pain. Birdies galore all day and a bogey-bogey finish.

  12. Birdie

    Day -15 (17), Jones -10 (17)

Matt Jones could well be going through the spell which crushes his momentum and plagues his mind tomorrow. He hooked right on 17 - something you cannot do under any circumstance. Like Tony Finau before him, he couldn't chip up onto the green so a third shot sets up a bogey putt which he should nail.

    Jason Day

Jason Day found the putting surface off the tee and with lake Michigan as his backdrop, matches the beauty of the water with a stunning putt from 25 feet. Timely.

    Jones. Wide. Double.

  13. 'I'll make enough to get it done'

    Spieth -13 (18)

Jordan Spieth reacts to his seven under par round: "At the beginning of the round I wasn't as aggressive and told myself 'it's time to start taking some chances'. In order to keep up with these leaders you have to make birdies.

"I knew the guys were under par early. I knew 10 through to 14 were all wedge opportunities so they would make more.

"The par saves on eight and nine were the keys to this round. I could have been one over but managed to shoot seven under.

"Tomorrow looks like it will be tougher conditions. We'll see what they bring, it's just about trying to limit the mistakes. If I can have a bogey-free round again I think I'll make enough putts to get it done."

  14. That's ugly!

    Finau -11 (17), Day -14 (16), Jones -12 (16)

As Jordan Spieth delivered, others around him made a dog's dinner of their respective holes.

I can't even begin to describe the levels of ugly Tony Finau found on 17. His ball was almost unplayable in a bunker but he managed to escape with bogey four.

What about the par five? A banker hole for Jason Day and Matt Jones. Not so as they both have a bit of bad luck around the green. Day struck his second well but found a nasty position in the fringe of the green, it's just par as his third leaves too much of a putt.

Jones is officially wobbling and makes bogey on the easiest hole on the course.

  15. Birdie

    Spieth -13 (18)

    Jordan Spieth

    HE CAN!

What a perfect hole of golf. The full 303 yard drive was straight, the approach from a long way back was stellar and the putt perfect.

Jordan Spieth has just landed a blow and the unlikely hat-trick of majors is well on. The galleries loved that. What a roar.

  16. What a shot!

    Spieth -12 (17)

Jordan Spieth is stealthy isn't he? He ticked along all day and lays down a charge late on, just as Matt Jones and Jason Day wobble - albeit slightly.

Spieth takes on 18 - the hardest hole on the course this week - to leave 12 foot for birdie and the chance to move within a stroke.

Remember, only two men have won three majors in a year. For now.

  17. Birdie

    Rose -13 (16), Finau -12 (16)

The shots now seem to take on another level of significance as the jostling for a major-winning position on Sunday becomes more and more intense.

Not the time for Tony Finau to pull his tee shot on 17 then. He will have to chip up a cliff on this par three. Justin Rose has an eagle effort on 16 but it's so far from the cup he is practically stood in another state. Brilliant effort though and birdie from 10 inches. One back Justin. One back.

  19. Day and Jones in contrast

    Day -14 (15), Jones -13 (15)

    Matt Jones and Jason Day

Jason Day, a 27-year-old from Beaudesert, Queensland, has some serious major pedigree - in only 19 major starts, he has six top-five finishes, nine top-10 finishes and 14 top-30 finishes. Fellow Aussie Matt Jones, 35 and from Sydney, has only played in seven majors over six years, has missed three cuts and has a best finish of tied for 30th, at this year's Open. Who's your money on?

  20. That's incredible!

    Day -14 (15), Jones -13 (15), Spieth -12 (17)

Key moment. Key moment. Jason Day rattles only the face of the bunker and watches his ball roll back to his feet, now he's struggling for bogey, let alone par.

Up ahead on 16, Jordan Spieth for birdie... boom. Talk about a predator, he timed that in a devastating way.

Back to Day, he has 25 feet for bogey, nope. It is a double and the field grasp the Australian in a little. Matt Jones is level with Day now... no he's not... makes bogey himself with a nervy looking putt.

  21. Post update

    Day -16 (14), Jones -14 (14),

Our front runners find a wee bit of trouble on 15. Jason Day turns his shot over and it goes left, Matt Jones is a little short. Good up and downs needed for par and then they'll roll onto a par five next where their positions can be strengthened.

  22. Listen up ball

    Spieth -11 (16)

"Turn left. You gotta turn left..."

Jordan Spieth talks to his ball more than any other player. Perhaps it's a measure of how good he is that the object flying at pace listens to him more often than not.

This tee shot on 17 indeed turns left and swings into the green to leave a makeable birdie putt.

  23. Birdie

    Spieth -11 (16)

Jordan Spieth for eagle... no joy. A good birdie though on 16. He had to nail that par five as other around him make their push for glory.

    This champion ain't done yet.

  24. Post update

    Day -16 (14)

    Jason Day
  25. Birdie

    Day -16 (14), Jones -14 (14)

Jordan Spieth has kept a low profile today, it's not his fault, he's actually flying on four under for his round but others are just finding another gear.

Spieth though has an eagle putt on 16 after a long approach takes a nice kick in his favour. We'll bring you the putt when he makes the long walk up to the dance floor.

Perhaps Jason Day and Matt Jones can sense Spieth is up to something, birdies for the pair on 14. What else did you expect?

  26. Post update

    Day -15 (13)

    Jay Townsend

Former American professional golfer on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Right now, Day has the chance to eliminate most of his challengers. He just looks like he's so on."

  27. What a shot!

    Day -15 (13)

Bogey doesn't exist. Par doesn't exist. Only birdie does. Jason Day is a man on a mission, he's bullying Whistling Straits.

From 109 yards he cracks a stunner to within a few feet. No one can live with him and if we're not careful, he may be sleeping on a four or five shot lead tonight.

  28. Birdie

    Rose -12 (14)

    Justin Rose

Justin Rose just can't switch off the after burners and he's going just one way on this leaderboard.

Solid as a rock - he sinks a birdie putt to reach a dozen under par. Remember Rose made double-bogey on six so he's really dug in to excel.

And a round of applause for the sunglasses if nothing else.

  29. 'One of the best of my life'

    Grace -12 (18)

Branden Grace reacts to his round of 64 and playing partner Martin Kaymer's 65: "It was a good day from the start, we both ripped it down the first and we fed off eachother a little bit. Martin made great putts and I managed to make some birdies out there.

On his hole out from the bunker on 18: "It was one of the best bunker shots I've ever played in my life."

Can you draw on going close at the US Open at Chambers Bay? "Today was a great day to give myself the chance. There's a lot of golf for the guys behind me to be played but Chambers Bay has some great memories and I know what to do."

  30. Birdie

    Day -15 (13)

Jason Day... a big, big play as he judges his birdie putt perfectly and that ladies and gents is a two-shot lead on Matt Jones, who can only bank par.

Day is now six under today through 13 holes. The Australian is driving the ball on average around 307 yards and has found seven of 10 fairways. It's relentless stuff and it looks more and more like being his time at last.

  31. Post update

    Rose -11 (13), Finau -12 (14), Day -14 (12), Jones -13 (12)

Jason Day and Matt Jones of Australia

Thanks Ben, this is Luke Reddy taking you into Sunday. Can Jason Day or Matt Jones take this tournament away from the field late on?

They both create outside birdie chances on 13 with solid wedges into the green as Tony Finau moves to within two - stroking in from a few feet on 14.

There's no stopping Justin Rose, he has the laser fixed on pins right now - back spin leaves 10 feet for birdie on 14. What quality we are seeing here.

  32. Post update

Rose's drive at 15 finds the short stuff and gives himself the ideal angle in. It's a high quality and multi-national leaderboard, we'll have Aussies, South Africans, Germans, Indians and Americans all vying for the title come Sunday.

  33. Post update

Day at 13, going with a hybrid. Perfect, pinned to the right side of the fairway. Rose misses with his birdie attempt at 14, the Englishman stays 11 under. Jones finds light rough with his tee shot at 13.

  34. Johnson -9 (16)

Finau should get that shot back he just chucked away at 13, he's stuck his second at 14 to within three feet. Dustin Johnson is stalking through the field, he's just made another birdie at 16 to get to nine under. Dustin's not quite dead yet.

  35. Post update

    Day -14 (12)

    Jay Townsend

Former American professional golfer on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"That was an opportunity missed for sure. I don't think he went to school on watching his playing companion shoot with a break from right to left. But it's another par in the book. He's now got a short hole coming up on 13 which he will be able to attack with a good tee shot."

  36. Jones -13 (12), Day -14 (12)

Jones with that long birdie putt at 12, his judgement of pace has been beautiful today and he taps in for par to stay -13. Day has had five straight one-putts but he can't make it six, he stays -14 and one clear of the field.

  37. Finau -11 (13)

Finau leaves his par putt short at 13 and drops to -11. Day at the par-three 12th and he's got another chance for birdie. Jones going with pitching wedge and he doesn't make it up the slope, leaves himself a 30-footer. Spieth with his second at 14, coming in blind, and he's tugged it slightly. His birdie putt is right on line but doesn't have enough steam, he stays -10.

  39. Day -14 (11), Jones -13 (11)

    Jason Day and Matt Jones

Day makes that eagle putt disappear at 11, he's the outright leader on 14 under. After so many near misses, could this finally be Day's major?

  40. Post update

Rose has got a four-footer for par at 12 and he makes it disappear to stay -11. Jones back as outright leader after birdie at 11 but Day has an eagle opportunity, which could see him leapfrog his playing partner. Finau with his rollercoaster putt at 13 and he hasn't got it over the crest...

  41. Casey -6 (70)

Day takes aim with his second at 11, not much more than a wedge in his mitts... it's perfect length, he's got about 12 feet for eagle. Finau missed the fairway at 13 and pays the price, getting no grip. Casey just misses with his birdie attempt at the last and is in with a third successive 70 for six under.

  42. Spieth -10 (13)

Lahiri has reeled off birdie at 11 and 12, he's only two back. Day on tee at 11, going with the big stick and that's a doozy, a thousand yards down there and on the short stuff. Jones has found his driving boots, he's safely away. Spieth pops in for birdie on 13, he's two off the lead.

Finau showing big cojones with a great saver at 13, he stays in the lead on 12 under. Spieth could go 10 under, he's all over the flag with his approach at 13. This is some magnificent golf, we have hit the motherload at Whistling Straits.

  45. Post update

    Grace -12 (18)

    Branden Grace
  46. Jones -12 (10), Grace -12 (64), Kaymer -11 (65), Rose -11 (11)

Jones for birdie on 10, from about 25 feet... good pace, will pop in for par. Grace from the sand at 18... HOLED IT! Have that, that's a 64 for the South African and 12 under overall - we have a three-way tie for the lead. It's all going off out there - Day makes birdie on 10, makes it a four-way tie for the lead, before Rose misses a four-footer for eagle on 11. He moves to -11, when it should have been -12. Kaymer in with a 65 and -11.

  47. Post update

Day and Jones both safely on in two at the 10th, Rose stiffs his second to within a few feet at 11 and he's got that for eagle and a share of the lead.

  49. Spieth -9 (12)

Spieth bends in another birdie on 12, he's now three off the lead. Kaymer with a peach of an approach at 18, he's got a putt for a 64. Finau on tee at the par-three 12th, 140 yards, yanks it left. Casey's par attempt at 17 doesn't break and he drops to -6. Grace in strife on 18...

  50. Finau joint leader on -12

Spieth has birdied 11 and is now only four off the lead, this is bubbling up very nicely indeed. And when you chuck someone playing shots out of a beer tent into the mix, it tastes even spicier. Finau has got a 10-footer for eagle at 11, doesn't hit it! But the 25-year-old American pops in for birdie and a share of the lead.

  51. Johnson -8 (14), Day -11 (9)

    Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson is not out of this yet, he's birdied the 14th to get to eight under. Day rams home his birdie putt at nine to get to within one shot of playing partner and fellow Aussie Jones.

  52. Jones -12 (9)

Grace can only make par at 17, he stays 11 under and in a three-way tie for second. Jones with a 12-footer for par... skips over the cellophane bridge, that's only his second bogey of the week and he drops to -12, one clear of the field.

  53. Kaymer -11 (17)

    Martin Kaymer

Meanwhile, Kaymer's on fire - the German bends in a monster on 17 to get to seven under for the day and 11 under for the week. Casey of England with a great saver at 16, he stays seven under. Day, by the way, was safely on in two at the ninth, by more conventional means than playing partner Jones.

  54. Post update

Some suggestion that Jones is going to play it where it lies, someone is even taking a hanging basket down. From what I can work out, he's going to have to clear a picket fence which forms the perimeter of the booze tent that overlooks the ninth green. It's all getting a bit Van de Velde out there. Jones takes aim, clips his ball off the blue carpet with a thud, up go the screams and his ball ends up on the edge of the green. Lovely stuff.

  55. Post update

Kaymer on tee at 17 and he's safely on. Here's Jones's ball, which has come to rest in front of the beer tent. It's a 70 yard hook and I'm not quite sure where Jones is going to drop it. Off he goes to find out, Aussie fans will be pleased to know he seems to find the whole situation quite amusing.

  56. Grace -11 (16)

Branden Grace taps in for birdie on 16 and he joins Finau on 11 under, tied for second. Jones, all of a sudden, is looking a bit iffy - slice off tee at eight, he's now duck-hooked his drive at nine. That's gone straight into the hospitality tent and doesn't look like it's come out again.

  57. Jones -13 (8), Day -10 (8), Kaymer -10 (16)

Day and Jones both scramble for pars at eight. Rose has marmalised a three wood 340 yards off the tee at nine, some of these distances are mind-boggling. Kaymer for eagle at 16, doesn't borrow enough. However, the German moves to 10 under, three off the lead.

  58. Post update

    McIlroy -6 (18)

Rory McIlroy reacts to his mark of six under on Sky Sports: "I got off to the perfect start. I knew there were a couple of chances early on.

"I got on a run of bogeys and birdies from there but nice to finish with two birdies in the final three.

"I think I've shown improvement each and every day which is a great sign. especially going into the last stretch of the season.

"I didn't know how I was going to play this week so to come back in a major championship and give a good account of myself is great. I'd like to shoot something low tomorrow but it's not likely to be enough to win."

  59. Post update

Rose on tee at nine and he whip-cracks one down the middle. Charl Schwartzel of South Africa is in with a 68, the former Masters champion is six under overall. Day at eight with another fine recovery, should save par. Jones cosies his birdie putt up towards the hole, he should stay -13.

  60. Finau -11 (9)

    Jason Day

Day taking eight iron at eight - from 200 yards - and he misses the green long and left. Finau on nine and he bends in an eight-footer for birdie, he grabs outright second on 11 under. Jones finds the front of the green with his second, should make par from there. Kaymer on 16 and he's on in two, what a shot that was, he's got an eagle putt from about 25 feet.

  61. Still in it? Race run?

  62. Post update

An army of fans looking for Jones's ball, which is eventually located not far from the beach. You can't miss Billy Horschel, his trousers are radioactive. Another chance on 13, that would be four birdies in a row. Dustin Johnson muscling his way back into contention, golf's jilted bride is seven under after 11. Horschel missed that birdie putt...

  63. Horschel -9 (12)

Horschel has picked up shots at 10, 11 and 12 and is nine under, three off the lead. Rose's second at eight and it's into the guts of the green. Casey easily on in two at 15, birdie chance. Jones takes aim at eight and out goes the arm, he's missed the fairway off to the right. That's the beauty of this course, there are bear traps around every corner.

  64. McIlroy cards 68 for -6

Jones for birdie at seven, from about 30 feet... he's almost stuck it in, misses by about two inches to the right. Koepka rolls in a birdie at 18 for a round of 67 and seven under and McIlroy follows him in for a 68 and six under.

  65. Post update

Here's Ernie Els with a monster birdie putt at the last, that's a 69 for five under overall. Shot gone for Kuchar at 13, he drops back to -7. McIlroy at 18, from the middle of the fairway. All over the flag, could well make birdie from there. What a recovery from Day back at seven, that was a gem and he should save par.

  66. Rose -9 (7)

Justin Rose bags another bird at seven, the Englishman is now nine under and four off the lead. Matt Jones on tee at seven, safely on. Day doesn't like his tee shot and no wonder, he's found some nonsense out left...

  67. Jones -13 (6)

    Martin Kaymer

Kaymer is nine under after a birdie at 14, the German, winner at Whistling Straits in 2010, is looking good. Here's Day at six, from about 12 feet... leaves it a whisker right. Matt Jones buries his though, he's 13 under and now has a three-shot lead over the field...

  68. Kuchar -8 (12)

Lingmerth making a right dog's dinner of the sixth, two shots gone after a flyer out of a bunker and suddenly he's back to six under. Day with 98 yards left at six, that's a corker, birdie chance from there. Kuchar rams one in at 12, gets to -8. McIlroy for birdie at 17... didn't hit it, although it was a lot longer than I thought, he stays -5.

  69. Double bogey

    Lingmerth -6 (6)

    Eilidh Barbour

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra commentator

"David Lingmerth with a double bogey putt and it could have been a lot worse for him."

  70. Finau -10 (7)

Thanks Luke, this is Ben Dirs for a bit, fresh from England beating France in the rugger. McIlroy on tee at 17, makeable birdie putt from there. Jeev Milkha Singh is the highest finisher by an Indian in a major, or so I believe, he finished ninth in the US PGA in 2008. But Anirban Lahiri is currently nine under through six and looking handy. Tony Finau gets to -10 and within two of the lead courtesy of a birdie at seven.

  71. Blinding slacks...

    Horschel -7 (10)

A thought on Billy Horschel's trousers today. Yikes.

    Billy Horschel
  72. Birdie

    McIlroy -5 (16), Day -10 (5)

Jason Day is just alternating throughout - birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie - through five holes.

He takes advantage of the par five fifth for the latest birdie. Remember, Day made bogey on the last hole of his second round this morning so in six holes he's picked up three bogeys.

Rory McIlroy has another shot back after a four on 16. His eagle putt wasn't far away either.

  73. Birdie

    Grace -10 (13), Kaymer -8 (13)

    Branden Grace

Grace nails his 10 footer on 13 but Martin Kaymer, closer and on the same line can't get his effort right.

  74. Birdie

    Rose -8 (5), Lingmerth -8 (5)

Justin Rose takes his shoes off to stand in the water. He rolled those cream slacks up to his knees and takes a smooth swing to find the green. Can he convert... dry those feet Justin... great putt. Died of pace near the hole and had just enough life in it to go in.

David Lingmerth refuses to go away. He's a tough cookie the world number 45 and his putt is wonderfully judged, threatens to break but doesn't - back to eight under after five.

  75. Bogey

    McIlroy -4 (15)

    Rory McIlroy

I bring you news of a Rory McIlroy bogey on 15. He actually struck a fan with his second shot and had a nice exchange with the poor fella who looked absolutely fine.

So, we await the go-to line... McIlroy must be tired after five weeks out. I've not heard it yet but give it another couple of holes.

Still, he got the blood pumping around Whistling Straits with his early magic today. Four shots made in five holes from the off remember.

  76. That's incredible!

    Kaymer -7 (12), Grace -9 (12), Casey -7 (11)

Whoaa. My head is spinning. Everything drops and I mean everything. Branden Grace - birdie on 12 to reach nine under - that had to drop.

Martin Kaymer, no way is this one going in from the front of the 12th green - it's a full 30 footer - the roars go up as it creeps closer and yes, it's in. What a putt.

Paul Casey, from around 15 foot for eagle. You know the rest. Drops. Steady on gents.

  78. Bogey

    McIlroy -5 (13), Day -9 (4), Jones -12 (4)

The body language of Rory McIlroy has changed somewhat from that early charge through five holes. Here he picks his club off the floor and he carries his shoulders like a stroppy teenager. He just looks fed up as that ball lands among spectators left of the green.

Jason Day goes bogey-birdie-bogey. Too much trouble to duck on the fourth hole and he can't drain a 15 foot par attempt.

The top guys aren't charging - Branden Grace is. After birdie on 11 his tee shot on 12 is just six feet from the cup. Our leader Matt Jones is steady away - par on four with two putts.

  79. The £90m miss

Did you know that in the moments after Jordan Spieth missed his put to reach the Open Championship play-off, his sponsor - Under Armour - took a hit of around £90m on their share price?

    Jordan Spieth

Don't feel too sorry for them though, it's a drop in the ocean for the clothing manufacturer. Intrigued? Read all about it here.

  80. Someone needs to grasp it...

    Spieth -7 (5)

As Jordan Spieth - the putting machine - gets a birdie attempt wrong on the par-five fifth - it feels to me like someone needs to grasp initiative here. Plenty of missed chances out there but they won't win the bounty come Sunday night (or very early on Monday morning if you're UK based).

  81. Post update

    Rose -7 (4)

    Jay Townsend

Former American professional golfer on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"He's in real trouble there. That was real poor distance control by Justin."

Rose has around 15 feet left for bogey, this could be a double... it is. Rose is furious and pretends to smash the ball in anger but sensibly withdraws.

  82. Post update

    Jones -12 (3), Day -10 (3), McIlroy -5 (14), Casey -5 (10)

Somehow Matt Jones got up and down from the depths of the rough adjacent to the third tee. That's probably a bonus par given the state of his drive. The lead is two again as Jason Day taps in.

Paul Casey gets his round to one under for the day in some style, he had just four inches left after a shot from 96 yards. Rory McIlroy stands dead still over his putt after it slides away. He stares the ball down as birdie evades him on 14.

  83. Fancy a low one?

    Weekley
  84. What a shot!

    Jones -12 (2), Day -9 (2)

So a bogey on two, what have you got Jason Day?

Have some of this. He makes a mockery of the 193 yards that separate the third tee and pin with a wonderful strike. All of one yard left at most. So, so good.

His playing partner Matt Jones is in trouble - missed the green.

  85. Post update

    McIlroy -5 (13), Day -9 (2), Lingmerth -8 (3), Schwartzel -7 (13)

It's still on for Rory McIlroy as he sinks his putt on 12 - back to five under. a few more of those are needed down the stretch. Jason Day is bogey all day on two, those sand travails were never going to end well. David Lingmerth is on the birdie board on three and just four back.

What's this from Charl Schwartzel? Hitting the flag from a long way out. You cheeky rascal. Misses the birdie putt though. You've got to press those home.

  86. That's ugly!

    Day -10 (2)

    Bucket and spade

I'm not sure about you but sometimes, just sometimes, it's nice to see a professional golfer chip from one bunker to another. Some of us do that each time we play unlike these sand experts.

Jason Day goes from one sand trap to another here on the par five second. So to his fourth shot, it's right against the lip of the bunker.... dig deep Jason... he's out but has 25 feet for par. The lead could be extended here.

  87. Post update

    McIlroy -4 (12)

You get the feeling these holes will determine whether Rory McIlroy is an also ran or not tomorrow. He's eight back now despite that brilliant start. Quality stuff on 13 though as he finds the green superbly from a long way back. This six footer must drop for birdie...

  88. Post update

    Rose -9 (2), Lingmerth -7 (2), Day -10 (1), Jones -12 (1)

Justin Rose cannot repeat the feat he produced on one as his long putt on the second will only leave a tap-in par. He is playing with David Lingmerth who also has a dig for birdie from range, this ball is going underground... no. It loops around the cup and that's par only.

Our leader is in the middle of the second fairway and he will aim for the green in two - it's a par five of course - but he's well wide and spectators duck. Don't be fooled though, these magicians can still make birdie from there and not wanting to be left out, Jason Day lands in a bunker to the left of the same green.

  89. 'I'm slowly coming back'

    Mickelson -5 (18)

Phil Mickelson reacts to his six-under-par 66: "I feel like I was close. I still had three three putts and some things I have to clean up. The golf course is very gettable, the greens are receptive. You can make a lot of birdies here. I think we will see a lot of low scores in the afternoon.

"I haven't been at my best for some time and I'm slowly coming back. Rounds like these help. It's disappointing I'm not quite there yet. Each round I seem to hit more good shots and if I'm patient enough it will come back."

  90. Fancy some of this?

    Rory McIlroy
  91. Bogey

    McIlroy -4 (12)

Oh Rory, Rory, Rory. A three putt at this stage is not good.

  93. Birdie

    Jones -12 (1), Day -10 (1), Finau -8 (2), Lahiri -9 (2), Spieth -7 (2).

Matt Jones - how are the nerves? What nerves. His second shot is measured to perfection and leaves a great birdie chance on one. Jason Day follows him in to leave a good chance too. To Spieth on three, off the tee... rock solid onto the green - 20 feet left. On the second... Anirban Lahiri and Tony Finau bank birdies after brilliant approaches.

Day and Jones convert - birdies. Birdies everywhere.

  94. Birdie

    Rose -9 (1)

    Jay Townsend

Former American professional golfer on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"That's exactly what you want to do. An unexpected birdie after an errant tee shot so a bonus for Justin Rose."

  95. Birdie

    Rose -9 (1)

No... he can't, can he... oh Justin Rose. He wags his finger as a gigantic putt drops on the opening stretch. That was all of 30 feet, maybe even more. What a start.

  96. Leader is off

    Jones -11, Day -9

On the tee, our leader, Matt Jones.

Smashes into his drive, it's a big draw and well placed. Jason Day alongside him - two Australians - takes two practice swings and shakes out his left hand... swish. A little draw, fairway all day.

  97. Post update

    Schwartzel -7 (11), Grace -7 (7), McIlroy -5 (10)

There are a bunch of players stacking up behind our leaders.

    Charl Schwartzel

South Africa's Charl Schwartzel and Branden Grace reach seven under through 11 and seven holes respectively. India's Anirban Lahiri birdies one to reach eight under.

What can Rory McIlroy produce with his third shot on the par-five 11th? Not bad, not great, an outside birdie chance as a result of his chip from near a bunker - some 20 feet left.

  98. Post update

    Rose -8

We have a lady announcing players as they arrive on the tee box who sounds a little like a computer in her delivery. "On. The. Tee. Justin. Rose."

Still, she's very clear, as is Rose as he screams "FORE RIGHT" after his strike. A nice break though and he'll be in the rough but not hampered by anything else.

  99. Birdie

    McIlroy -5 (10), Grace -7 (7)

Now can Rory McIlroy get his back nine off to a birdie start? He has around 15 feet, a left-to-right breaker... looks good... in the left side of the cup.

Can he get everything back in kilter again?

We have a bit of a steamer on our hands in Branden Grace. He downs a gorgeous putt on seven from range for birdie. That's three of those today.

  100. 'Everything feels calm'

    Day -9 (21:03 BST)

    Jason Day

When play resumed in round two earlier today Jason Day briefly led on 10 under but leaked a shot at the last hole of his second round to fall back a stroke as Matt Jones pushed on to -11.

This is Day's 20th major and a top 10 finish would give him a stunning 50% record of finishing in the top 10 in those events. This year has been a good one so far, with two wins in 15 PGA Tour events.

Asked if this is the best his game has ever felt Day told Sky Sports: "By far. It's hard to describe the feelings going through my body right now. Everything feels very calm."

  101. Birdie

    Spieth -7 (1)

    Jay Townsend

Former American professional golfer on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Look out baby, here he comes."

  102. Post update

    Spieth -7 (1)

Spieth starts with a birdie, courtesy of a cracking mid-range putt. Not a wobble on it as it drops dead centre. It is a statement of intent from the two-time major winner. There'll be no grand slam this year, but he would love to claim three out of four.

  103. Post update

    McIlroy -4 (9)

What can McIlroy do to resurrect his round? Well, his tee shot at the par-four 10th is a good start. It's gone a long way and is in a perfect spot on the fairway. When he gets that tee shot right it really is a thing of beauty.

  104. Post update

    Mickelson -5 (18)

    Phil Mickelson tips his hat

Phil Mickelson finishes off to claim a 66 and finish on five under. He is inside the top 20.

  105. McIlroy two under through nine

    Jay Townsend

Former American professional golfer on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"That's a good outward nine. Two under par, very good. He's moving in the right direction. I never thought he had a chance to win, he did make me wonder a bit there early in his round but I think anything in the top 25 is pretty good."

  106. Post update

    Mickelson -5 (17), Spieth -6, Piercy -6

Mickelson is chipping off a flat bit of ground, which will help him. He goes with elevation and spin and and plants his ball just a few feet from the hole. That'll be a par to end his round.

Meanwhile, back on the first, Jordan Spieth is up. And his tee shot is every inch that of a man in form. Straight down the middle. No such joy for Spieth's playing partner Scott Piercey, who skips off the fairway and into a bunker from his drive.

  107. Post update

    McIlroy -4 (8)

    Jay Townsend

Former American professional golfer on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"This is a golf course that because of the slopes and hills it has 100% tested Rory McIlroy. I have no question he is 100% healthy it's just about getting him sharp."

  108. Post update

    Mickelson -5 (17), McIlroy -4 (8)

Mickelson's approach to the 18th green looks good right up until the final landing, which sees him just short. He gets a bit of luck, though, because he is on the patch of rough between two green-side bunkers.

McIlroy's tee shot at the ninth leaves him a tough second shot, on the bank and in the rough. He is playing above his feet but plays it well and finds the green.

  109. Post update

    Weekley -6 (18)

    Boo Weekley on the green

Boo Weekley was in a bit of bother on 18, but his third shot is a cracking iron to leave him with a very makeable par putt. As you'd expect he takes his time assessing it before sending it on its way and home. He's renowned as a big hitter, but he is no slouch when he needs to be delicate. Eight birdies in a round of 65 has given Boo a chance.

  110. Post update

Jordan Spieth sent shivers through the rest of the field with a 67 on Friday that brought him right into contention on six under par. The 22-year-old could end the week with three of the year's four major titles to his name, and having overtaken Rory McIlroy as the world number one.

"We get along great and that's just a ranking system," said the American, before adding: "It's a ranking system I strive to be on top of at some stage."

Spieth tees off in his third round at 20:39 BST.

  111. Post update

    McIlroy -4 (7), Johnson -5 (1)

McIlroy's chip out of the sand finds the green, but he's got a monster for par. He starts it way right and it does break but it doesn't have anywhere near the legs to reach the hole. The last three holes have really checked his momentum after a storming start.

No birdie for DJ on the first. His 12-footer goes an inch left.

  112. Post update

    McIlroy -5 (7), Mickelson -5 (17)

    Phil Mickelson

McIlroy's tee shot at the eighth is left. This is going to depend on just how close he is to that fairway-side bunker...

Well, he's in it. His contact with an iron out of the sand is good but he misses the green and lands in another bunker, just short of the putting surface. He'll need another good shot to salvage this.

Meanwhile, Mickelson has another birdie to his name at 17 courtesy of a superb long putt that hovers on the brink of the hole before dropping. The little tease.

  113. Post update

    Mickelson -4 (17), Johnson -5 (1)

Mickelson is a very popular man, especially on courses in the country of his birth. His iron shot on 17 lands on the green and gives him a shot at a birdie, drawing huge applause from the crowds.

Dustin Johnson is on the first tee and gives it a typical hammer. It's gone a long way and on the fairway. Good start for this year's nearly man.

  114. Post update

    Tiger Woods

Live coverage is under way on BBC Radio 5 live Sports Extra with Iain Carter, Eilidh Barbour and Jay Townsend taking you right through to the end of play - click the live coverage tab to listen in.

The early demise of Tiger Woods is currently under discussion - "You have to wonder what happened to the guy who said I only turn up for the 'W', meaning the win. He's nowhere near winning," says Jay.

  115. Post update

    McIlroy -5 (7)

Rory goes conservative at the par-three seventh. It is not a flag you can really hit because of it's position on the lake-side right of the green. He hits the back, giving himself a big putt for birdie. Mind you, if he approaches it like he did the fifth, a birdie is not out of the question.

The pace on the putt is good but it just stays right.

  116. Post update

    Mickelson -4 (16), Mahan -6 (2)

Mickelson for birdie at 16. He hits it heavy and well past the hole. That'll be a par. Fellow American Hunter Mahan has made it birdies at one and two with a nice little putt at the second. He moves to six under.

  117. Bogey

    McIlroy -5 (6)

Rory with his par putt. It breaks right to left but a bit too much and he drops a shot. That tee shot into the sand was a costly one. It is the first check to his progress. How he responds now will be the making of his round.

  118. Birdie

    Weekley -6 (16)

Boo Weekley is down to six under with a birdie at 16, courtesy of a nice six-foot putt. He is seven under for the round.

Rickie Fowler at 11. He has a 15-footer for eagle. And he makes it. That's a boost for the young American, who is now three under.

  119. That's ugly!

    Mickelson -4 (15), Casey -3 (1), McIlroy -6 (5)

Poor putts from Phil Mickelson on 15 and Paul Casey on one yield unwanted bogeys. Mickelson's charge takes a blow while Casey will have warned himself about a poor start when beginning on four under.

What of Rory McIlroy? He has the momentum of a Formula 1 car in full flight. His ball lacks some pace though on six and an ugly landing zone short of the green and in the sand leaves him with a nasty bunker shot... hits the pin! Around six feet remaining for par.

  120. Beautiful, barbaric but getting easier...

    Why all the low scores?

This incredible course, decorated with over 1,000 bunkers, is statistically getting easier to play.

    Whistling Straits

The 7,500 yard monster of a course played at an average 74.14 strokes in round one but dropped to 72.9 strokes in the second round.

The hole where prayers, luck, skill and every ounce of effort is needed is 18. The par four is playing at an average 4.6 strokes and in my book, that's just cruel.

  121. Post update

    McIlroy -6 (5)

That wonderful effort from McIlroy moves him into a tie for seventh already. There's a very, very low score out there today. Let's be bold, I'll say we get another 63 to match the effort of Hiroshi Iwata yesterday.

  122. Eagle

    McIlroy -6 (5)

WOW. Rory Mcilroy has no right to do this on five from off the green but his effort from the fringe moves at pace to one place and one place only, the cup. It needs a bit of help from the flag stick to take the pace off it and boy oh boy, what a move he's making.

  123. Tiger out but not down

    Woods +4

    Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is a notable absentee from the weekend field, once again, after finishing four over par after two rounds - two shots outside the cut.

Woods has now failed to make the weekend at the US Open, Open Championship and US PGA this year, and admitted: "It's frustrating to miss any cuts, because any time you miss a cut, you don't have a chance to win the event."

However, the 39-year-old remains optimistic he can regain the form that has won his 14 majors.

"The confidence is growing quickly," he said. "That's the fun part. I'm hitting shots and able to hit shots that I haven't been able to hit in years and that's nice again."

Woods has announced he will play at the Wyndham Championship next week.

  124. Birdie

    Stricker -3 (6), Snedeker -4 (2)

Brandt Snedeker treats us to the shot of the day so far from 84 yards out on the second hole. His ball spins behind the cup and leaves six inches for birdie, lovely control.

Steve Stricker seems to always bank these putts from 20 feet and does so as usual for a second birdie of the day on six. He's from this neck of the woods - Edgerton, Wisconsin to be precise - so the spectators love seeing his putt drop.

  127. Post update

    Watson -2 (8), McIlroy -4 (4)

Much like Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson's game has threatened to burst into life this week but some well-placed bunker or piece of thick rough has seemed to do for him repeatedly.

No threat of such hazards here though as he clips a wedge into the ninth green. It checks a little on bounce one, a little more on bounce two and by bounce three spins to within three feet to set up birdie.

Rory McIlroy looks strong over the ball in his stance as he sizes up the long par-four fifth hole. He carries the dog leg with a boomer - great position.

  128. Birdie

    McIlroy -4 (4), Donald -2 (3), Mickelson -5 (14)

Rory McIlroy strides with purpose off the fourth green and why not, he has birdie fuel running through him.

His putt briefly threatens not to take the break but obliges late on to drop below ground. If you'd offered him two birdies in four holes I think he'd have jumped at it, even with a sore ankle.

All pars for Luke Donald, a super putt on three saves his card from an ugly bogey. Phil Mickelson can roll in another birdie here on 14... just off line.

  129. Birdie

    Thomas -3 (1)

    Justin Thomas

This 22-year-old has placed in the top 10 at seven of his 25 events this season and he gets talked up a great deal. At two under, can he launch an attack from way back?

It's a good start, birdie on one.

  130. Listen to the action live tonight

You can listen to Iain Carter, Eilidh Barbour and Jay Townsend live through your computer, tablet or mobile by clicking the live coverage tab at the top of this page when the clock strikes eight.

  131. Birdie

    McIlroy -3 (3), Watson -2 (8)

Rory McIlroy you little beauty. He picks his ball up off the fairway so gracefully and the noise the contact makes is superb, as is the result. Around six feet for birdie remain. Bubba Watson... fancy a run from him? He picks up birdie on eight and makes it to two under.

Watson has driven the ball a whopping 317 yards on average this week. He has the power but does he have the accuracy to really build momentum?

  132. Birdie

    Mickelson -5 (13)

I don't want to put the curse on him but could Phil Mickelson be in with a shout of a 63 today? His eighth birdie of the day arrives as he uses that trusty putter to curl into the cup on 13. A good stroke from 10 feet and Lefty is five under overall.

  133. Post update

    McIlroy -3 (3), Stenson -3 (2)

Rory McIlroy on the third, flanked by Lake Michigan to his left and mounds you don't want to dice with to the right. Don't push it, don't pull it, keep it straight... and he does.

Into the heart of the green and a birdie chance of around 20 feet. He stands over this ball and gives it some pace... gutsy... wide.

Henrik Stenson carded a great round of 66 yesterday and reaches three under with a lovely putt on two - tonnes of break in that one.

  134. 'I might sneak up there'

    Kaymer -4 (19:27 BST)

Germany's Martin Kaymer gets underway at 19:27 BST at four under and tells Sky Sports: "If I shoot one more low round today or tomorrow I think I may still have a chance. It's all about the putting. I haven't made any putts over 15 or 18 feet. I think If I can make a couple over the next couple of days I might sneak up there.

"I really do hope they make the course a bit firmer. I think you need to shoot 16 or 17 under par to win here and I think that's a very low score for a major championship."

  135. Birdie

    McIlroy -3 (2)

    Rory McIlroy

It's probably not enough to say he's making a move of substance yet but Rory McIlroy is at least up and running - birdie on the second.

He took a straight line up the par five with his drive, his lay up, and a chip down the line of the flag. Dead aim all the way and the putt followed suit.

  136. Post update

    Day -9 (21:03 BST)

    Jason Day

Jason Day may well have ended Friday night as a co-leader and found himself two back by Saturday lunchtime but he's in upbeat mood.

Day has a remarkable nine top-10 finishes in major championships and two of those arrived this year. So is this his time? As he says on Twitter, his target as things stand is a fellow Australian - Matt Jones.

  137. Leaders out at 21:03 BST

Just how did something so beautiful turn so volatile last night?

    Dustin Johnson

This course is just 17 years old yet looks like it has been carved into the banks of Lake Michigan forever.

Our leaders are scheduled to tee it up at 21:03 BST, so get some snacks in - maybe the odd energy drink - and tweet us your views on #bbcgolf.

  138. Birdie

    Dubuisson -4 (15), Mickelson -4 (11), Oosthuizen -3 (5)

Phil Mickelson, stunning chip on 11, a foot left... birdie. Louis Oosthuizen has a snaking putt on five and makes birdie. A raise of the right hand is as pumped as Oosthuizen gets.

Victor Dubuisson is another cool customer and barely raises an eyebrow as he cracks an iron from range to within a foot on 15. Tap in birdie - six under for the day, four under overall. Some round forming here for the 2014 Ryder Cup winner.

  139. Woods misses cut...

    Woods +4

In the event you missed it, Tiger Woods could not evade the cut line as his second round ended earlier.

    Tiger Woods

A mark of four over was two shots shy of the score needed to stay for the weekend.

Woods therefore has missed three cuts from four majors this year. He'll be 40 when he tees it up at the Masters next year. Are his hopes of a 15th major over?

  140. How low can you go?

I think a charger from the pack may go low - very low - early on in round three but this course could be torn up by one of the front runners later, crushing any raised hopes our red-hot early starters may have.

Rory McIlroy is on two and lampoons one down the middle of the fairway despite looking mildly concerned with that swing.

  141. Birdie

    Reed -1 (7), Mickelson -3 (10)

Patrick Reed drains a monster putt on seven to drop under par for the tournament, that was almost from the other side of Lake Michigan.

Phil Mickelson has found this course tricky to say the least. He's leapt from bunker to rough and back to bunker over three days. Every threat of gaining momentum has been swiftly ended. On the par-five 11th he overcooks a shot into the green but an up and down for birdie looks on.

  142. A course there to be shot at...

Even the last Ryder Cup captain is getting excited.

    Paul McGinley

Whistling Straits has been a cruel canvas this week on times but today it looks receptive. The greens are softer after last night's storm, the wind is non existent.

The course is getting easier. It yielded 448 birdies on day one, followed by 533 on day two. Let's push the 600 mark today gents and light up the sky.

  143. Post update

    McIlroy -2, Koepka -2

Rory McIlroy finds rough on one and has to play a strategic chip, using the slope into this green to set up an outside birdie chance.

The defending champion is all in black today and knows he needs a hot start from nine shots of the lead. He plays with American talent Brooks Koepka who also knows how to smash the ball off the tee so beware of wayward golf balls reaching your living room.

Can Rory summon a birdie from a full 30 feet? Gorgeous stroke, fine weight, must drop... no. Hangs on, half an inch from jackpot.

  144. A quick catch up...

    Birdies galore

    So what have you missed?

Round two took a couple of hours to complete, Matt Jones seized the lead from Jason Day and round three looks likely to offer up low scores.

Out on these testing fairways Phil Mickelson has shot six birdies to reach three under to join Victor Dubuisson - he's five under on the day.

Of the 42 players on the course, only nine are over par and a certain Rory McIlroy has just smashed a drive down the first.

  145. Is Jones really our leader?

    M Jones - 11 (21:03 BST)

So what has the storm left us?

    Matt Jones

The 156-strong field stands at 77. There are 13 players within six shots of leader Matt Jones but a low score from further back always seems to arrive on day three of a major.

And here's a question, do you take Matt Jones as the leader? Inexperienced at the sharp end of majors, is his 11 under the mark? Or do we take Jason Day at nine under as our legitimate front runner?

  146. Welcome

Where once there was thunder, lightning, rain and a general battering from the elements, now there is sun and a tamed golf course.

    Whistling Straits

Whistling Straits took the force of Mother Nature on Friday night, the players were taken off the course and returned early on Saturday morning to an environment they'll all like.

Soft greens, no wind, throw in a collection of players within striking distance of the top of the leaderboard and we may have a classic day on our hands.

A Rory McIlroy charge? A Jordan Spieth masterclass? Maybe even a Jason Day to remember.

    Thanks for joining us.
