"Look out baby, here he comes."
Spieth starts with a birdie, courtesy of a cracking mid-range putt. Not a wobble on it as it drops dead centre. It is a statement of intent from the two-time major winner. There'll be no grand slam this year, but he would love to claim three out of four.
What can McIlroy do to resurrect his round? Well, his tee shot at the par-four 10th is a good start. It's gone a long way and is in a perfect spot on the fairway. When he gets that tee shot right it really is a thing of beauty.
Phil Mickelson finishes off to claim a 66 and finish on five under. He is inside the top 20.

"These players are the ones who enjoyed the good side of the draw in that they didn't have to get up early."

"That's a good outward nine. Two under par, very good. He's moving in the right direction. I never thought he had a chance to win, he did make me wonder a bit there early in his round but I think anything in the top 25 is pretty good."
Mickelson is chipping off a flat bit of ground, which will help him. He goes with elevation and spin and and plants his ball just a few feet from the hole. That'll be a par to end his round.
Meanwhile, back on the first, Jordan Spieth is up. And his tee shot is every inch that of a man in form. Straight down the middle. No such joy for Spieth's playing partner Scott Piercey, who skips off the fairway and into a bunker from his drive.

"This is a golf course that because of the slopes and hills it has 100% tested Rory McIlroy. I have no question he is 100% healthy it's just about getting him sharp."
Mickelson's approach to the 18th green looks good right up until the final landing, which sees him just short. He gets a bit of luck, though, because he is on the patch of rough between two green-side bunkers.
McIlroy's tee shot at the ninth leaves him a tough second shot, on the bank and in the rough. He is playing above his feet but plays it well and finds the green.
Boo Weekley was in a bit of bother on 18, but his third shot is a cracking iron to leave him with a very makeable par putt. As you'd expect he takes his time assessing it before sending it on its way and home. He's renowned as a big hitter, but he is no slouch when he needs to be delicate. Eight birdies in a round of 65 has given Boo a chance.
Jordan Spieth sent shivers through the rest of the field with a 67 on Friday that brought him right into contention on six under par. The 22-year-old could end the week with three of the year's four major titles to his name, and having overtaken Rory McIlroy as the world number one.
"We get along great and that's just a ranking system," said the American, before adding: "It's a ranking system I strive to be on top of at some stage."
Spieth tees off in his third round at 20:39 BST.
McIlroy's chip out of the sand finds the green, but he's got a monster for par. He starts it way right and it does break but it doesn't have anywhere near the legs to reach the hole. The last three holes have really checked his momentum after a storming start.
No birdie for DJ on the first. His 12-footer goes an inch left.
McIlroy's tee shot at the eighth is left. This is going to depend on just how close he is to that fairway-side bunker...
Well, he's in it. His contact with an iron out of the sand is good but he misses the green and lands in another bunker, just short of the putting surface. He'll need another good shot to salvage this.
Meanwhile, Mickelson has another birdie to his name at 17 courtesy of a superb long putt that hovers on the brink of the hole before dropping. The little tease.
Mickelson is a very popular man, especially on courses in the country of his birth. His iron shot on 17 lands on the green and gives him a shot at a birdie, drawing huge applause from the crowds.
Dustin Johnson is on the first tee and gives it a typical hammer. It's gone a long way and on the fairway. Good start for this year's nearly man.

The early demise of Tiger Woods is currently under discussion - "You have to wonder what happened to the guy who said I only turn up for the 'W', meaning the win. He's nowhere near winning," says Jay.
Rory goes conservative at the par-three seventh. It is not a flag you can really hit because of it's position on the lake-side right of the green. He hits the back, giving himself a big putt for birdie. Mind you, if he approaches it like he did the fifth, a birdie is not out of the question.
The pace on the putt is good but it just stays right.
Mickelson for birdie at 16. He hits it heavy and well past the hole. That'll be a par. Fellow American Hunter Mahan has made it birdies at one and two with a nice little putt at the second. He moves to six under.
Rory with his par putt. It breaks right to left but a bit too much and he drops a shot. That tee shot into the sand was a costly one. It is the first check to his progress. How he responds now will be the making of his round.
Boo Weekley is down to six under with a birdie at 16, courtesy of a nice six-foot putt. He is seven under for the round.
Rickie Fowler at 11. He has a 15-footer for eagle. And he makes it. That's a boost for the young American, who is now three under.
Poor putts from Phil Mickelson on 15 and Paul Casey on one yield unwanted bogeys. Mickelson's charge takes a blow while Casey will have warned himself about a poor start when beginning on four under.
What of Rory McIlroy? He has the momentum of a Formula 1 car in full flight. His ball lacks some pace though on six and an ugly landing zone short of the green and in the sand leaves him with a nasty bunker shot... hits the pin! Around six feet remaining for par.
