We've got a Dicky Pride out there today, no relation of late, great British rock-n-roller Dickie Pride. At least I think he's not. That was some birdie from Bubba at 10, sliding it in from about 30 feet. Mat Fitzpatrick hacking up the par-four ninth, there'll be shots gone there.

Not a great start from England's Luke Donald, he's four over through eight and in danger of playing himself out of contention on the first afternoon. McIlroy with a solid six-footer on eight to stay +2. Lowry slides a par putt by on seven , drops to level. Bubba birdies 10, that's three in a row for -2 and a share of second.

Romain Wattel of France, a qualifier, has birdied 10 and is one under. He misses a makeable birdie putt at 11. Bubba birdies nine and covers the front nine in one under par, Spieth's long-range birdie putt on 16 comes up a whisker short. Landry to five under, he rolls in a third birdie in a row on four...

Ireland's Shane Lowry kicked off with a birdie and is now -1 through six. Here's our leader, Andrew Landry, on the par-five fourth and he leaves himself an eight-footer for birdie.

Westwood with a tap-in birdie on 17... misses, and leaves himself a knee-knocker coming back. DeChambeau on tee at 16... doesn't quite catch it but it clambers on. Willett on eight, going with five wood... just on the front.

Fowler makes his par at seven and here's DeChambeau from long range at the long, par-four 15th... birdie! Two in a row, he's -2. Zach Johnson for birdie at 15... rolls it well past... Spieth makes a tremendous clutch putt from 10 feet...

Willett for birdie at seven... slides just by from 20 feet or so but taps in for par to stay +1. But McIlroy has let one go, drops to +2. What know you of our leader, Andrew Landry? He made his PGA Tour debut at the 2015 Shell Houston Open and qualified for this year's US Open, his first major, after coming through local qualifying in Memphis.

Landry adds birdie at three to birdie at two and is now four under, two clear of New Zealand's Danny Lee and England's Lee Westwood. 

Kevin Streelman has covered the back nine in 33, he's playing the 10th. England's Matt Fitzpatrick drops a shot at seven, drops back to one under and two off the lead.

Westwood makes a clutch par putt at 16 to stay two under. Here's Dechambeau on tee at 15, leaks into the rough. He's two off the lead at -1. Open champion Zach Johnson finds the first cut, which is in great contrast to the primary rough, which is jungle. Spieth finds a church pew, he's back at level after bogey at 14.

That's not great from Spieth at the 14th, a little heavy-handed from just off the green. Here's McIlroy, Fowler and Willett at the par-four seventh. McIlroy with driver and he finds the short stuff down the left, Willett fades his out right, Fowler into that fluffy rough...

Lee Westwood made the most of the break to catch up with the football...

Hello, Ben Dirs here. They are out on the course again after that short break for a passing storm. No hitting yet, officials just making sure everyone is in place...

So who's this Andrew Landry who leads the US Open?

Ranked 624 in the world (yes, you read that right), he's a 28-year-old who made his PGA Tour debut at last year's Houston Open.

This is his first year on the full PGA Tour and Oakmont is his first major championship.

His winnings so far this season: $69,130. In golf terms, a pittance.

If Landry weren't a professional golfer, he says he would be a fishing guide. His favourite food is crawfish and raw oysters and his favourite TV show is Seinfeld.   

The man has good taste.
