  10. McIlroy two overpublished at 14:26

It's not started well for Rory McIlroy - he's now bogeyed two in a row after dropping a shot at the third.

The Northern Irishman missed the fairway on his first three holes, using an iron on each occasion, but has found the cut stuff with a driver on the fourth.

Here's Luke Donald on the 11th hole (his second).

Now, you really, really don't want to end up in that stuff.

Unfortunately the Englishman bogeyed that hole and dropped back to level par.

  12. Bogey for McIlroy, birdie for Willettpublished at 14:13

A bogey for world number three Rory McIlroy at the par-four second after he found a fairway bunker and the Northern Irishman drops to one over.

He's also found the sand at the third. Can he fashion an escape this time?

Better for playing partner DannyWillett though who birdied the second to go one under.

There are clear skies at the moment in Oakmont but the course has been softened by heavy overnight rain - and there could be more to come.

Organisers are preparing for potential thunderstorms (there is an 80% chance, apparently) after more than an inch of rain had drenched the course overnight.

However, conditions are expected to improve over the next three days.

Meanwhile, there is now a three-way tie at the top: Andres Gonzales bogeyed 16 to drop to one under, with Kevin Streelman (pictured) now at two under alongside Denmark's Soren Hansen and American Andrew Landry.

Justin Rose, winner of the 2013 US Open at Merion, is expecting to face "the toughest greens in golf" at Oakmont.

But the 35-year-old admits he is just glad to be playing after overcoming a back injury.

Rose said: "It's been a race against the clock for me to be fit and ready to play here. Since the Players Championship I have been recovering from a flared-up disc.

"I have done everything humanly possible to be here from a recovery point of view, from a fitness point of view, from a practice point of view.

"It's been a tight timetable but I'm confident I've done a lot of the hard work.

"I'm coming in fresh, which is the great news. That could be an advantage come the end of the week."

  16. Win would make McIlroy feel 'a more complete player'published at 13:53

    Rory McIlroyImage source, Getty Images

Rory McIlroy is ultra-keen to add to his four majors having not won one of the big four titles since the 2014 US PGA .

McIlroy believes repeating his US Open success in 2011, when he took advantage of a rain-softened course at Congressional to win with a record 16-under-par total, would rank among his career highs.

"You know you're going to be put under a lot of pressure on every single shot you hit out there," he said.

"To be able to win on a course like this, with the conditions the way they are, it would be maybe my biggest accomplishment in the game.

"It definitely would make me feel like a more complete player."

  17. Latest scorespublished at 13:48

A solid start for Rory McIlroy and Danny Willett who have both parred the par-four first.

Playing alongside them, American Rickie Fowler - so often the bridesmaid, never the bride so far - sank a six-foot birdie putt. That'll settle any nerves.

England's Luke Donald, who had to qualify after dropping to 79 in the world rankings, is also moving in the right direction after birdieing the 10th - his first.

Fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick is also one under after two.

  18. Life tricky since Masters win - Willettpublished at 13:43

    Danny WillettImage source, Reuters

This US Open will be a whole new experience for England's Danny Willett, the most recent major winner.

The 28-year-old says he has found life in the public eye "tricky" since claiming the Green Jacket at Augusta in April.

He said: "The last couple of months, I can't remember a practice session or a tournament that's not being filmed or where a microphone is not nearby."

However, Willett is on more familiar ground playing alongside Rory McIlroy,

He added: "I played with Rory when we were amateurs and it should be fun on Thursday and Friday. He's a fantastic example of how athletic golf is these days."

  19. Lefty thinks about US Open 'all the time'published at 13:37

    Phil MickelsonImage source, ap

Six-time US Open runner-up Phil Mickelson believes he has a "great opportunity" to complete a career Grand Slam by finally claiming his natiuonal championship this week.

Mickelson, who is celebrating his 46th birthday today, said: "This is the tournament I want to win most to complete the four majors," said Mickelson. "I think about it all the time.

"I have to put that out of my head, be patient and not think about results."

History is against Phil though - only three men have won majors aged 46 or older.

  20. Spieth the man to beat?published at 13:32

    Jordan SpiethImage source, Getty Images

As we've already mentioned, Jordan Spieth will be defending his title, won at Chambers Bay a year ago when Dustin Johnson three-putted the last from 12 feet.

The world number two triumphed in the Dean & DeLuca Invitational less than a month ago and says he's over his final-round collapse on the 12th hole at the Masters.

It's hard to believe he won't be in the mix come Sunday.
