  1. Porteous is eagle eyedpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Porteous -5 (7)

This is the way to make an entrance to your first ever major.

South Africa's Haydn Porteous has two eagles in his first six holes to move to four-under par.

They came on the par five four and six.

He then followed that up with a birdie on the seventh.

The 22-year-old is ranked 249th in the world and qualified for The Open by winning the Joburg Open in January.

  2. McIlroy double bogeyspublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    McIlroy -2 (13)

"Sit!" screams Rory McIlroy as he looks to float an approach shot on to the green from 185 yards, but the ball isn't listening...instead it's greeted by concerned "ooohs" and "aaahs" from the crowd around the green - suggesting the Northern Irishman has some work on to salvage this one.

They're right. McIlroy attempts to pitch on to the green but sees his shot fly past the pin and land the world number four with around a 40-foot putt.

And, just to complete a disappointing hole, he finishes with a double bogey - first dropped shots on the back nine for Rory.

    Donaldson -2 (17)

Jamie Donaldson has perhaps been inspired by his country's Euro 2016 exploits.

Like Chris Coleman's side, Welshman Donaldson has been a steady man on the links today. Just one bogey leaves hims two under as he walks on to 18.

The Ryder Cup hero has hit 76% of greens in regulation and it's that accuracy which is making his round so far.

  5. Reed is new clubhouse leaderpublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Reed -5 (18)

American Patrick Reed goes into the clubhouse with the lead on five-under par after a birdie on the 18th.

His scoring was done on the front nine with that eagle on the third.

    Rose -2 (15)

Justin Rose is motionless over the ball on the 15th green. My guess is a few of you have a wager on him, he's always fancied by the masses.

At one under, Rose is ticking along nicely. This putt is well weighted, it's fading away in pace as it nears the cup and bang, in she goes. Two under.

  7. Jones is co-leaderpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Jones -5 (9), Willett E (13), Day +1 (13)

Some of you may be unfamiliar with Matt Jones at the top of the leaderboard but he's been there before in a major. He led last year's PGA Championship at halfway, a tournament which saw Jason Day break his major duck.

Jones struggled to hold it together but who knows what he's learned since then? It seems a lot judging by the majestic putt from off the green which just took him to five under.

Willett taps in for par to steady the ship on 13. That ends a bad few holes, time to block it out and move on.

Day also taps in on 13 to say one over. The scoring pace has eased all over.

  8. Oosthuizen's 'magical' hole-in-onepublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

South African Louis Oosthuizen hits the first hole-in-one of the 145th Open at the 14th hole.

    Watson E (12)

As we mentioned, Bubba Watson's form has faded dramatically, dropping from -5 after the sixth to evens after 12.

He has not recovered from the triple bogey on the Postage Stamp and followed it with bogeys on the 10th and 11th.

  12. Level par for Dazzapublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Ryder Cup captain finishes at level par

    Darren ClarkeImage source, Getty Images

Darren Clarke has finished on level par 71 and has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 live about how he played:

“I didn’t play great, but I used a bit of my links experience to cling on to level par.

The golf course is great. To play well you’ve got to score well though. I think you’re going to see a lot of +4 and +5s on the back nine, even more if the wind picks up.

Clarke also talked about his role as Ryder Cup captain:

At times its very overwhelming being Ryder Cup captain. My job is to make sure Europoean golfers are relaxed so they can play well but it’s quite difficult to follow what everyone is doing. My three picks are going to be difficult."

  13. Easy does it for Rorypublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    McIlroy -4 Watson E (12)

Rory McIlroy takes another safe four to par the 12th.

He is yet to record a birdie on the back nine, but consistent pars are proving a productive formula for the Northern Irishman.

He shot four birdies on the front nine to go out in 32. But while he has steadily consolidated his four under through 12, McIlroy has watched playing partner Bubba Watson slip from having a share of the lead to level par.

A triple bogey on the eighth did the damage for Watson, and since then the American has added two bogeys.

    Thomas -4 (18)

It would seem our leader Justin Thomas has a taste for the Claret Jug. Looking at this Snap Chat, he must have been part of the farewell party as last year's winner Zach Johnson prepared to say farewell to it.

  17. Bogey, bogey, bogeypublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Willett E (12)

Danny Willett misses what, for a Masters champion, looks like a straightforward putt for par on the 12th.

That's three bogeys in a row for the Englishman since the turn and drops him back to evens for the day.

Tough crowd at Troon. Matsuyama's 240 yard two iron, into the wind, to within a few feet of the pin at 11 elicits a smattering of applause, as if he's just popped in a three-foot putt for par.
