    Mickelson -8

"Thanks for helping guys, I'll see you out there," says Phil Mickelson to marshalls who will follow his round.

He walks under the arch to tee one and gets some claps from the crowds at this course early today.

Phil's strength on day one was his work from the fairway, finding 89% of greens in regulation.

    Johnston -2, McDowell +4

As Phil Mickelson fastens his laces with 10 minutes until he tees off, Graeme McDowell is up on tee one and finds the fairway nicely. G-Mac is four over though, a second major looks highly unlikely.

A crowd favourite in Andrew 'Beef' Johnston is alongside McDowell and he also keeps his ball in play. This is a man who draws cries of "beef" from spectators. Imagine that if he's picking up the Claret Jug? He could too, he's two under.

A French flag is flying at half mast on one of the stands at Royal Troon as a mark of respect following Thursday's attack in Nice.

Some players are also wearing black ribbons. As we told you earlier, French player Clement Sordet has written "pray for Nice" on his hat. His compatriot Victor Dubuisson is underway at 13:48 BST.

    Kjeldsen -4 (1)

Phil Mickelson is striding from the range to the putting green, he has 20 minutes until it's showtime.

Soren Kjeldsen arrows a lovely iron into the second green, taking a bunker narrowly out of play and pitching nicely to leave an uphill 20 footer for birdie. He doesn't hit it and will have to convert from two feet for par.

  6. Birdiepublished at 08:03 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Haas -4 (1)

As Bill Haas starts his day with a putt from off the green to net birdie and reach four under, we can see the leaderboard has a red, white and blue feel to it.

From Patrick Reed to Zach Johnson, American players are more at home than ever on a links course it seems.

    Molinari -3 (2), Finau -4 (4)

Tony Finau lampoons the ball off the tee so par fives are just his thing. The 26-year-old has just a three footer for birdie on four after good approach work and that birdie gets him back to four under.

Francesco Molinari is showing us the trickier conditions may not be all consuming, birdie on two takes him to three under.

Paul Casey on the tee. No major win. There won't be one this week either as he's six over. He hits the fairway.

    "Heartbroken".

    "I felt like crying".

Phil Mickelson gave some wonderful soundbites after his round on Thursday and the papers have taken notice. The Daily Telegraph leads its sport offering on his quotes.

  10. Kjeldsen off and runningpublished at 07:47 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Kjeldsen -4

Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen is currently tied for fourth after a rock solid round on day one came to light with two birdies in the final three holes.

Kjeldsen has won four times on the European Tour, so he's by no means one to neglect. His opening tee shot is decent enough, the ball trickles into the first cut. Nice position.

  11. Golf in the headlinespublished at 07:44 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Golf rarely makes the back pages in the UK, so when it does, you know it must be something tasty.

Phil the thrill must have had newspaper editors glued to the screen on Thursday as he features prominently.

To watch it back, click here. If you missed it all - we are all busy after all - Lefty saw a put lip out on the last hole to deny him the first round of 62 in any major tournament.

    Finau -3 (3), Molinari -2 (1)

The third hole, named Gyaws, has robbed Tony Finau of a stroke, his putt lacks a little pace and breaks right to miss.

Francesco Molinari is nicely placed on two under through one hole.

I will be stunned if anyone is beyond eight under come tonight, it's a day to cling on, not push on.

    Lefty out early

    Tony FinauImage source, PA

Out on the course right now we have Tony Finau, he's at four under and the best placed of the early starters. The big-hitting American has a testing putt to stay on his score on the third green.

Soren Kjeldsen is up shortly, he's also four blows below par and as you will see, a certain Phil Mickelson is underway soon too. He's on the range.

  14. A special 07:30 BST groupingpublished at 07:32 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Calcavecchia +2, Leonard -1, Hamilton +4

A treat for the early risers sees three former champions in a grouping together.

Mark Calcavecchia (1989), Justin Leonard (1997) and Todd Hamilton (2004) all won here at Royal Troon.

Will the winner come from this group again? No player has won twice at Troon.

Leonard showed promise yesterday and starts at one under.

  15. Now it gets toughpublished at 07:30 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Eight under par for a day one lead? This is meant to be difficult.

Well, the Scottish weather is going to have a big say in the events of the next few days. You've had one sunny day, now how about one of wind and rain.

This is the forecast for Friday. What does it mean?

Well the first six holes tend to play down wind normally, the last six into the wind. Hence when that wind is up, things become more volatile. Even par may well be a golden score on day two.

  17. Thoughts elsewhere...published at 07:25 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Of course, today's play will be set against the darkest of backdrops given events that have taken place in southern France.

One of our early starters is Frenchman Clement Sordet and the victims of Thursday's attacks in Nice are clearly on his mind.

I think you'll agree that the free scoring opening day provided excitement and hope we could be in for a tournament to remember.

Such is golf's dance with the elements though that day two offers a different prospect. The blue sky has been replaced with a tetchy grey, the t-shirts swapped for warm attire.

Like Tiger Woods and Nick Price before him, Phil Mickelson suffered the 'lip out' when a 62 was practically in his hands. It's like gravity decides to cease for a moment in time, just so that a sport can evade breaking new ground.
