  3. Horschel horseshoes out of The Openpublished at 20:28 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Of all the many hard luck stories on this weather-hit second day at The Open, the sad tale of Billy Horschel was probably the most eye-watering.

The American went from the joy of a first-day 67 to the agony of a second-day 85 - 18 shots worse!

Since 1892, the records say that only three golfers in Open history have suffered a worst disparity between successive rounds.

After starting with five straight pars, the hapless Horschel was still four under, but he then ran up five bogeys, three doubles and a treble at the 13th to miss the cut by five shots on 10 over - 20 shots behind Phil Mickelson.

  4. 'I need a fast start'published at 20:26 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -2

Rory McIlroy speaking to Radio 5 live about the draw after battling the wind and rain while the leaders Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson had the best of the weather on day two.

McIlroy who was level par for the day to finish two-under for the tournament said: "You have to take it for what it is, all I can say is I feel I played well the last couple of days shot, I have shot the best scores in my side of the draw but unfortunately that is eight shots behind the leaders. That is the way it is, you just have to try and get off to a fast start tomorrow, make a few birdies and get closer to the leaders.

"It is hard to not get disheartened, you have to try your utmost to keep everything together, you know you are not anywhere near the lead, you have to keep optimistic going into the weekend.

"I have been on the end of some good and bad draws. The only good draw was at Hoylake which I won. You do not let a bad draw ruin the week. I still feel I have a good chance going into the weekend, the way i am playing."

  8. 'Toughest conditions ever'published at 20:06 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Willett +4

    Gerald Scott
    BBC Sport Online

“That’s up there with the toughest conditions I’ve ever played,” said Masters champion Danny Willett who kept his nerve to hole a 12-foot putt on the last to look like he make the cut on four over par.

“We played almost every hole into the wind as the wind direction switched around the turn. Anyone who’s under par on our side of the draw has played some great golf.”

  9. 'My chances here are finished'published at 20:05 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Spieth +4

Jordan Spieth, looks likely to be back tomorrow after making the projected cut of +4 but he is now focusing on the last major at the end of the month.

"I'm looking to put nice, smooth, solid swings, very confident putts on it to lead into the PGA Championship, because I know my chances here are likely finished."

  10. 'I have never played in weather like that'published at 20:03 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Spieth +4

More from Jordan Spieth on the weather.

"What we had on the 16th tee when I looked up and you see the sheets of water moving sideways, man, if I've played in that, it's been over here on a practice round day or I can't remember.

"I can't remember seeing the wind move a ball that much."

"But I certainly can't blame my chances on the draw. My game is not major championship-winning calibre."

  11. You wish your score didn't matter'published at 20:02 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Spieth +4

Jordan Spieth, who carded a 75 to finish four-over for the tournament, had to contend with strong winds and rain in his round.

He said: "We might have caught the rough end of the draw. That happens. I kind of shook it off to an extent at the end of the round. I just tried to smile, tried to enjoy the fact that you don't play in this often.

"You wish your score didn't matter when you play in this. You wish this was just a round with your buddies where you go into the clubhouse and have one or seven pints afterwards."

  12. 'It's like playing your own mini-tournament'published at 20:01 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Rose +3

    Gerald Scott
    BBC Sport Online

Justin Rose said the fickleness of the weather had done him no favours. He cut a frustrated figure after a birdie-free 77 in which he ran up two bogeys and two doubles, including a six at the last, to sneak into the weekend on three over par.

“Such a disparity in the weather between the two halves of the draw is frustrating,” said England's 2013 US Open champion.

”You quickly realised that the top of the leaderboard was unattainable. Our group was just about making the cut, which tells you tough it was. It’s like you’re playing your own mini tournament.”

  13. McIlroy targets a good startpublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -2 (18)

Rory McIlroy talking to Sky Sports: "I thought If i could get to five-under I would feel good about myself. For most of the front nine I was just trying to pick off birdies where I could.

"The putts I missed on nine and 10 were just misreads. I should have backed away because I was getting buffeted by the wind. That stretch of the course played difficult again, the same as yesterday and I was happy to pick off shots on my way back in.

"I have played a couple of good rounds in comparison to the guys in my side of the draw but I am still eight shots of the lead. I will need something around 30 on the front nine tomorrow."

  14. The cut mark could still changepublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

So as it stands the projected cut is +4.

    However that could change.

There are 28 players still playing and several are within range of the cut. Belgium's Nic Colsaerts has just birdied the 14th to get to +4 for example.

The top 70 + ties make it through. At present there are 67 players at +3 - and South Korea's Soomin Lee has just birdied the last to get to that mark.

If three more can get to +3 then the cut mark will move and the likes of Jordan Spieth, Danny Willett, Bubba Watson and Colin Montgomerie will be checking out of Troon's finest hotels.

    Nervy times ahead...

  15. Watson waiting on the cutpublished at 19:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -2, Watson +4 (18)

Rory McIlroy's birdie putt turns in front of the hole. Should be an easy par - though we said that about the ninth and the 10th.

But this time he makes no mistake.

Bubba Watson's putt now to stay in The Open.

And he gets it. He has cut a frustrated figure but he has his birdie and should the projected cut stays as it is, at +4, he will play the weekend.

  16. Postpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Rain teeming down at Royal Troon, but some brave souls are staying to cheer McIlroy and Watson home, huddled down under umbrellas in the stands around the 18th green.

  17. Postpublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -2 (17)

Rory McIlroy's second shot on the 18th and he has given it a little bit too much and by the look on his face, he knows it.

It pitches on the back of the green but doesn't check back.

  18. Postpublished at 19:28 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Watson +5 (17)

Bubba Watson needs a three here to make the cut.

It's raining. Again. He dries his hands.

Second shot and it's good. Very good. He leaves himself a five-footer for birdie.

  19. Sterne holes 63ft puttpublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Richard Sterne has just moved to one under with a birdie on the 14th. A little earlier in the round, he sank  a 63-foot putt for a birdie on the famous Postage Stamp.
