    Thomas (-3), Rose (+1), Oosthuizen (+8)

Justin Thomas is due on the first tee any moment now, but the big question is, what will he be wearing?

The American opted for a cardigan and tie yesterday and told BBC Radio 5 live's Iain Carter he "enjoys dressing up".

"There's no other major championship I feel like I could wear this," he added.

He's alongside Justin Rose and Louis Oosthuizen today.

    Poulter (-3 after 6)

Ian Poulter has made a steady start to his second round.

He carded three under par yesterday, and is level through six this afternoon.

The conditions are only expected to get worse at Royal Birkdale, so the Englishman will no doubt be happy if he can keep up this consistency.

  3. 'Spieth image great for golf'published at 14:49 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Spieth (-5)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour player on BBC Radio 5 live

Jordan Spieth is a very grounded, down to earth guy who happens to be good at golf.

He's assured, polite and confident in his own ability. As a product, I think he's really good for the game - a clean cut image.

  4. 'I'm in there' - McIlroypublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    McIlroy (-1)

Rory McIlroy reacts to his 68, leaving him one under overall: "The south-east wind today is the toughest on this course. Really pleased with the birdie on 17 and just thought if I can stay under par then I'm right in there for the weekend.

"I hit some quality shots on the front nine. I saw a lot of quality out there which was really good. I holed what I needed to and hung in there. The confidence can return in the middle of a round like we saw yesterday. i just wanted to continue that positivity I had yesterday evening. I just need to keep that frame of mind for the next few days."

  5. Wind no problem for Stensonpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Spieth (-5), Stenson (-1)

    Jay Townsend
BBC Radio 5 live golf expert

Jordan Spieth played much more aggressively off the tee yesterday. Henrik Stenson took the longer view for the week and played much more conservatively.

He tried to take the bunkers out of play with his club selection. He's a big, strong guy so he'll be able to fight through the wind this afternoon.

Come on, Rory. Let's finish with a birdie. It's an ambitious hope, McIlroy rolling up a nicely-weighted putt which leaves him with a tap-in.

He signs for a two-under 68, the second-best round already in the clubhouse, putting him back in the red.

Playing partner Charl Schwartzel also taps in for a par, ending up four over overall. He started four under, meaning he plummeted down the charts quicker than a Steve Brookstein record. Who's he? Exactly.

World number one Dustin Johnson, the third leg of this top-of-the-range tripod, bogeys the last to finish with a two-over 72.

    Watson (E after 16)

From the eye-wateringly awful to the Bubba-rilliant... Watson follows up a double bogey with back-to-back birdies, rolling in a long-ranger at the par-fourth 16th to move back to level par.

He scoops up his bright yellow ball, shows it to the crowd and moves on. He birdied the 17th yesterday, too... but who knows what awaits today.

  9. Birkdale on songpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

My mate wanted to start a One Direction tribute act a few years back and call it 'Wrong Direction', which, aptly, was also a fair analysis of his golf.

Anyway, Niall Horan is a big fan of the Royal Birkdale course... the singer enjoys his golf, and has even been asked to caddie by Rory McIlroy for a couple of charity tournaments in the past.

  10. Weather updatepublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

Where are these near-gale force winds and angry downpours we were promised? No signs yet. In fact, the winds seem to be decreasing.

Maybe it is the calm before the storm...

England's Paul Casey, now on three over, just inside the projected cut mark, only made the cut by one shot here nine years ago.

But he recovered over the weekend in 2008 to finish joint seventh - and he believes anything is still possible.

"As long as nobody goes out on their own and the lead stays on five or six under," he says.

    Poulter (-3 after 5)

    Des Smyth
Former Ryder Cup vice captain on BBC Radio 5 live

Ian Poulter is in a nice rich vein of form.

He played the Irish Open well, he played last week well and is looking after his business very well today.

  13. Birdiepublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    McIlroy (-1), D Johnson (+2), Schwartzel (+4)

McIlroy needs a wedge to come up onto the 17th green, leaving him with a birdie putt back. Confident. Into the centre of the hole. Birdie #4 of the day, his first on the back nine.

Messrs Johnson and Schwartzel have to make do with pars.

Laurie Canter once played tennis against Andy Murray, sort of... the talented youth player was Avon's number two and made up part of the team facing the future Wimbledon champion's regional side.

But it was golf where Canter's future lay, and his second attempt at an Open - he finished second as an amateur at St Andrews seven years ago - is going much better than his first.

The 26-year-old has just birdied the 10th to move back to level par and edge himself inside the top 20.

  15. Postpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    McIlroy (E), D Johnson (+2), Schwartzel (+4)

An eagle three would do Rory McIlroy very nicely on the 17th. No-one has managed one today though.

Can Rory? He's got the head cover off the fairway wood. A bit thump forward is greeted by some 'ooohs' and a few 'aaahs'.

He's on the dancefloor! But then his ball slides off down the bank.

    Fitzpatrick (-2 after 5)

Only seven players who have taken to the course so far today are under par for the second round, Matthew Fitzpatrick is one of them.

The Englishman made the perfect start to proceedings on Friday with a birdie at the first, and he's through five holes without dropping a shot.

It takes the 22-year-old to two under and a share of seventh place.

Poulter (-3 after 4) Noren (level after 4)

A very tidy opening four drags for Ian Poulter - all pars. He launches an iron down the fifth hole, playing for position on this dog leg. His start is made to look better by the fact his playing partner Alex Noren is two over through the first four holes today.

Poulter will be elated if he can keep things this tight in these conditions.

    Casey (+3)

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at Royal Birkdale

Paul Casey did not quite get the 40th birthday present he was looking for as he slumped to a second-day 77 at Birkdale to fall down the leaderboard after closing day one as the top Englishman.

"Turning 40 does not mean I go from yesterday to suddenly can't play golf today although," he added, with his trademark cheeky grin.

"I did not hit one fairway on the front nine. In fact, I didn't do anything particularly well. Just a bad day," said the Arizona-based man from Cheltenham.

"I made it look the course much more difficult than it was. But today was work. Parties are totally separate. I just hope I don't shoot 77 at my party."
