    McIlroy (E after 16)

Rory McIlroy has not hit a green in regulation since the turn. Another round of two halves for the Northern Irishman. Funny old game.

After that near-disaster on the 15th, the world number four scrapes another save on the next, getting up and down from the side of the green for a par.

  2. Double Bubba bogeypublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Watson (+2 after 14)

As we thought, Bubba Watson is dispensing shots like a Blackpool bartender.

He cards a five on the par-three 14th to move to two over for the tournament, four over for the round.

  3. Still to tee offpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Westwood (+4 after 15)

Some big names are in danger of spending the weekend on the sofa. Lee Westwood is one in particular.

The Englishman is hovering above the cut-line after a round which has included six bogeys, one eagle and, now, a birdie after sinking a monster putt on 15.

That puts him four over which - as it stands - is just in the safety zone.

    Watson (E after 13)

Bubba Watson's round has been choppier than the Birkdale wind today.

A couple of birdies were followed by five dropped shots, but the American pulled himself back to level par on the 12th.

However, he's in trouble at 14 after thinning an approach into the sand on the par-three and coming up way short of the flag from the bunker.

Watch this space, it could be costly...

  6. Chappell strugglespublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Chappell (+6 after 16)

Strong hat game from American Kevin Chappell.

Poor golf game though, three over on the day and six over for the tournament after 16 holes. He's been decent on the PGA Tour this year but guess what Kev, we don't play on manicured courses void of rough over here. In our land, if it doesn't have knee-length grass, it's only a pitch and putt.

  7. Laird shoots nine overpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Laird (+7)

It might have been a solid day for Richie Ramsey, but his fellow Scot Martin Laird has had a shocker.

Both started on two under, but while Ramsey finished that way, Laird is now out at seven over.

He shot a massive nine-over 79 during his second round and hands in a card that makes for grim reading - five bogeys, two doubles.

The 34-year-old dropped shots at the third, six, seventh, eighth, two at the ninth, another two at the 11th, and a final one at the 13th.

At least he finished with a string of pars. Every cloud...

  8. See ya Phil...published at 13:55 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Mickelson (+9 after 14)

    Phil MickelsonImage source, Getty Images

A run of six bogey scores in seven holes have obliterated Phil Mickelson's card. He brings up birdie on the 14th but the game is up for Phil 'The Thrill' as he's now nine over for the tournament with a couple of holes to go.

Everybody wave... let's send the 2013 Open champion off from these shores with a polite wave now folks.

Interestingly, Mickelson is of course playing with his brother as caddie now, having recently parted with long-term bag man Jim 'Bones' Mackay.

    Kuchar (-4 after 18)

And it rules in Matt Kuchar - who is aged 39. The American, who has never won one of golf's majors, is a shot off the lead at the course where he made his Open debut in 1998.

One which the dreamers would say is 'written in the stars'...

  10. One for the oldies!published at 13:52 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

Henrik Stenson, Zach Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Darren Clarke are the last six men to lift the Claret Jug and it seems experience is a key component of Open success in the current climate.

Does that rule out the young guns? Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, we're looking at you.

  11. Ramsey back in the clubhousepublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Ramsey (-2)

Richie Ramsey was in that group alongside Matt Kuchar today, and is a couple of shots behind is playing partner in tied seventh.

The 34-year-old Scot will be very happy to have made it round in the rough, windy conditions in level par for the day, to hold onto his two under par for the tournament.

He bogeyed on the 13th, but pulled it back on the par-five 17th.

  12. Postpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    McIlroy (E), D Johnson (+2), Schwartzel (+3)

How did Charl Schwartzel come out of that little adventure? He's up on the green for four in the end, walking off with a bogey to go three over.

McIlroy decides to have a putt from the below the front fringe, racing his ball up close and converting for a six as well.

While those two scrap about behind him, Dustin Johnson marches on to the green hoping to nail a momentum-swinging eagle. It's good, but it is not quite right.

A birdie, however, lifts him a bit further away from the trapdoor.

    Kuchar (-4)

    BBC Radio 5 live

Matt Kuchar is back in the clubhouse at four under par for the tournament after a one-over-par 71 on Friday:

"I'm certainly glad to be done. It was a challenge. It was fun," he told BBC Radio 5 live. "I played some shots I never try to play, playing so far left and moving my target by 30 yards - it's hard to play.

"Above all I take solid ball striking, hit the ball tall. If you're not striking it in the middle of the clubface and controlling it with some good mechanics, you are really going to struggle.

"I'm looking forward to watching on tele this afternoon."

  14. 18/156 in redpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Poulter (-3 after 2) Knox (+4) Noren (-1)

Ian Poulter has hit the rough on his first three tee shots but somehow he is yet to drop a shot.

Alongside him, Scotland's Russell Knox is on the same mark as he started the day, four over, while Sweden's Alex Noren has given one back to the scoreboard to drop to one under overall.

As far as I can see, 18 of the 156 in the field are under par.

    McIlroy (-1), D Johnson (+3), Schwartzel (+2)

No wonder people get switched off by golf with that sort of madness. We're still not sure what all the kerfuffle was about on the 15th. No-one is.

What is clear is this: Rory McIlroy is going to drop a shot - at the very least. He chops out of the jungle into a bunker, then shovels one out of there onto the fairway.

He's still a got a way to go - and he's lagged it! The world number four is short of the green after four shots...

Sergio Garcia had a fight with a bush and came off worse on the fourth hole.

After a chip shot he took out his anger on the brambles, injuring his shoulder in the process.

The Masters champion then required some attention from the on-course physio.

Wedding planning getting too much for him? He finished on two-over.

We have all been there when we lose our temper on the course, after all, it is the cruelest of games.

    McIlroy (-1), D Johnson (+3), Schwartzel (+2)

Oh no! Rory's got too excited. He's lashed his drive right on the par-five 15th. So far right, in fact, he's landed next to a signpost.

Some odd-job man turns up to remove the wooden post, used primarily to direct spectators to the toilets/bar, not McIlroy to the green.

Charl Schwartzel is 20 or so yards further back in the thick stuff, both men about 80 yards to the right of the fairway.

Confusion reigns. Rules official appear out of nowhere, there is talk of an allen key needed to move a crossing sign, Schwartzel is measuring out a club length or two in preparation for a drop.

    Bedlam.

    Garcia (+2)

Sergio Garcia managed to break par today, despite playing most of his round with an injured shoulder.

Luckily, he thinks he'll be OK to put his wedding suit on next week.

"Obviously I hurt myself a little bit on the fourth hole today, but it's better than it felt," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I just hit a bush with a club going backwards and my shoulder kind of felt weird. It did something that it's not supposed to.

"I took a little bit of anti-inflammatory and it got better, but I'll have to go and get some work on it."

Garcia has also revealed the blue plaster on his finger is for a papercut.

  19. Bogey for Kucharpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 21 July 2017

    Kuchar (-4)

Matt Kuchar has some chunky looking footwear on. Far from Rickie Fowler-esque high-tops, these are more like workman's boots.

At least they'll keep the sand off his toes, because the American has just sent an aggressive drive into a bunker at the 18th.

It's not the first time he's beached a shot today, but this one could be costly. The par-four finale is unforgiving, and Kuchar can't find the long, ranging putt he needs to scramble par. It's a bogey at the last.

He held the outright lead at one point during his round, but he heads for the clubhouse one off the pace.

    McIlroy (-1), D Johnson (+3), Schwartzel (+2)

Rory McIlroy steadies the cart on the short 14th with a par three, then licks his lips as he strides towards the 15th. A par five which has coughed up 67 birdies over the past day and a half...

Playing partner Dustin Johnson is back to three over, teetering towards the projected cut.
