"Is that long?" quizzes Tiger. A little, but it's on the green and gives the 14-time major champion a chance for birdie.

Marc Leishman will have watched that and taken note - and that's wonderful from the Australian! High into the Augusta sky, it drops to the left of the flag, bounces once and stops four feet from glory.

Tommy Fleetwood goes slightly longer with his approach, but all three are in with a shot of birdie at the seventh.

  3. Thomas happy not to be number one... for nowpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

Justin Thomas is a man who now knows what it takes to win a major. And if the American joins an elite few in winning back-to-back PGA and Masters then he will knock Dustin Johnson off top spot in the world rankings.

Thomas arrives at Augusta buoyed by a win at the Honda Classic, a runner-up finish at the WGC-Mexico Championship and a fourth-placed finish at the WGC-Match Play.

Losing to Bubba Watson in the match play semi-final cost him the opportunity of starting the Masters as world number one - but he isn't too bothered...

"In the end it might be a good thing going to Augusta without that [world number one]," said Thomas.

"I get to go do what I was going to do and let Dustin Johnson have all that pressure!”

I'm not one to advise Tommy Fleetwood on his beard, but can't help thinking the shrubbery coating his chin and cheeks might get a little toasty in the Augusta sunshine.

Not that is fazes the Englishman, who hammers a drive down the middle of the manicured seventh fairway.

Tiger Woods will play first, his three wood coming up slightly shorter than Marc Leishman's tee shot.

A drop of the knees, a shrug of the shoulders, Tiger Woods fails to capitalise on his well-placed tee shot by leaving a birdie putt short. He'll remain on one over.

It's a good recovery from the leader Marc Leishman, his tee shot threatened to disappear among a flock of Tiger-following fans, but the Australian coaxes one from the light rough to the smooth stuff and then tucks it away to save par.

Tommy Fleetwood faces a long, uphill putt for birdie, but it takes the Southport man two to get down.

Judging by the fact it's taken Tiger's trio 90 minutes to play their opening five holes, we're expecting to be 'Comfortably Numb' come the close of play this evening.

Paul Casey has a birdie putt on the par-four seven - but it's a long 'un. About 25 foot away, Casey sends it out right, arcing round... and way past.

A tricky one back... he's pushed it. Another three putt for the Englishman drops him down to three over.

Hideki Matsuyma, meanwhile, continues his run of perfect pars. Steady as she goes.

The fans are checking their pockets behind the sixth green, I'm not sure where that Marc Leishman tee shot landed.

A few half-hearted "get in the hole" calls as Tommy Fleetwood pops one towards the flag, only to see it stick a little short.

And then silence at Augusta. No one dare breathe as Tiger takes to the tee, whipping a roar-inducing strike to within touching distance of the flag.

Ian Poulter was tied 123rd after the opening round of the Houston Open last week. He needed to win to book a spot at the Masters... you know what happened next.

A more reserved start for the Englishman at Augusta - he's level after one.

  10. Bogey for Woodspublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    M Leishman -2, T Woods +1, T Fleetwood +1 (5)

It's a long, testing putt for Tiger Woods, one that slows up the slope before gathering pace on the other side and rolling frustratingly for the American beyond its intended target. It leaves Woods with a job on to make par, and one that proves too tricky as he undercooks from six feet.

So close for Tommy Fleetwood. That looked like trickling in from 10 feet before stopping a rotation or two short of the cup. It's par for the Race to Dubai champion.

But Marc Leishman is loving life at Augusta right now. He taps down for a par that keeps him top of the leaderboard.

Oh dear. Patton Kizzire is the victim of a cruel joke by Augusta. The American debutant isn't laughing. he knocks on from the left side of the green... it's not got enough gas... and the ball comes trundling back towards him. That means the shot he rescued on the fifth has just been wiped out.

Meanwhile, Paul Casey and Hideki Matsuyama are both on the dancefloor and play perfectly-weighted putts from distance to walk off with threes. That settles the good ship Casey after a couple of choppy holes.

Marc Leishman tosses a blade of grass into the air like a fly-half assessing his conversion. His approach stops dead, it's found the edge of the green but the flag seems just a fluttering spec in the distance.

Tiger Woods plays out of the bunker and nestles into the same section of the green as his Australian rival. Woods couldn't see anything but sand there, relying on his caddie's instructions.

Tommy Fleetwood goes closest to the pin, sinking his effort from the fairway into the heart of the fifth green.

Fleetwood on the fifth tee... ball gently dusts the fairway, about 20 yards in front of Marc Leishman's. Next up... Tiger.

"Awwww, get down. Down!" Tiger isn't happy. He tugs his drive slightly left and stares anxiously as his ball soars towards the first of two fairway bunkers...

These are ideal conditions. It was windy yesterday and, speaking to a few of the players, they were a little concerned about that because that changes so many things. It's tough to know what sort score is out there - but Charley Hoffman shot an opening 65 last year. Is there one of those? I don't see why not.

  15. Woods bogeys fourthpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 5 April 2018

    M Leishman -2, T Woods E, T Fleetwood +1 (4)

Tiger cannot save par, wiping out that birdie at the third with a bogey on the par-three fourth after his putt drifts left.

Marc Leishman maintains his lead with a smart par putt of his own, now what can Tommy Fleetwood do?

The Englishman avoids a second bogey with a neat putt from four feet or so. He needed that.

    Ian Poulter always delivers.

This time, the 42-year-old Englishman left it incredibly late. But Poulter grabbed his Masters spot with a dramatic play-off victory at the Houston Open in Texas last weekend.

Poulter says getting to Augusta is just one of the bonuses of his victory, with eyes on a Ryder Cup spot in September.

"To get my first stroke-play victory is a big one," he said. "To get the exemption is a big one, to move up in the world ranking points is a big one and to tell (Ryder Cup captain) Thomas Bjorn, 'Hey, I'm here, my game's in shape'."

Hideki Matsuyama isn't quite starting like a Shinkansen bullet train that Japan are famed for. But he's chugging along nicely nonetheless. He misses the 5th green with his approach shot on the 455-yard par four, but dinks his chip within spitting distance.

Unfortunately Paul Casey is starting to go backwards. Back-to-back bogeys for the Englishman. Interestingly, Casey has only carded two sub-70 opening rounds at Augusta in previous 11 appearances.

Marc Leishman came up short on the opposite flank to Tiger Woods, and his approach skips on beyond the flag.

There's a steep wall on the bunker facing Tiger, and the 14-time major champion has to fly it over the pin. A little too heavy.

Tommy Fleetwood is also in the sand, but comes up the best of the trio with a tiddler to within four feet.

Tiger Woods, lining up for the par-three fourth hole that in his career he's played at 17 over par. That makes it his least favourite of the Masters course...

Where's this one going, then? It's just short of the green and finds the white quartz of the bunker.
