  1. Simpson's lead back to sixpublished at 21:29 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    W Simpson -16, C Schwartzel -9 (8)

It looked tricky, and so it proved for Charl Schwartzel from 12 feet or so. The South African pops his putt left of the pin and it stays up. Bogey.

But hang on a minute... a glimmer of hope for the rest of the field? Webb Simpson's par putt kisses the cup, almost drops and then decides not to.

    Bogey for the leader.

    Kim Si-woo -3 (17)

Kim Si-woo chalks up back-to-back birdies to get back to +2 for the round.

He is looking to undo the damage from five bogeys on the front nine.

    W Simpson -17, C Schwartzel -10 (7)

Simpson dinks on from between a couple of bunkers that were lurking to the left of the eighth green, Schwartzel's effort fizzes beyond the flag and leaves him a sizeable putt for par.

Deep conversation between Webb Simpson and his caddie on the par-three, 237-yard eighth before he takes a hybrid from the bag, and then pulls it left.

What's the opposite of commentator's curse?

Jon Rahm with a first birdie of the day at the par four 12th. He was putting for eagle, but after a seven on the previous hole, I am sure he will take all he can get.

    W Simpson -17, C Schwartzel -10 (7)

Right, let's check in on the runaway leader.

Webb Simpson clocks off another par at seven to maintain his seven-shot lead.

Charl Schwartzel can't recover any ground after his bogey at the fifth. Another par for the South African.

  7. Double bogey for Rahmpublished at 21:16 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    J Rahm E (11)

After opening rounds of 68 and 70 Jan Rahm has undone all that good work in the first 11 holes of his third round.

    T Fleetwood -8 (F)

Tommy Fleetwood after finishing with three birdies for a third round 68, speaking to Sky Sports: "A lot of the day was frustrating for the most part with a couple of chances I did not make.

"I was frustrated until the last few, so it is always nice to get that finish in."

  9. Postpublished at 21:08 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    I Poulter -9 (16)

Poulter fizzes in his birdie putt, it flirts with the cup and trickles on by. A grimace on the face of the Englishman, and a par to boot.

  10. Postpublished at 21:05 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    I Poulter -9 (15)

Ian Poulter is sporting a polo shirt I would place under 'ripe peach' on the colour chart.

In other fruity news, he pops a plum approach on the par-five 16th right up to the cup for birdie chance.

    Sweet.

  13. Bogey for Sabbatinipublished at 21:01 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    R Sabbatini -8 (13)

    Commentator's curse? Sorry Rory.

Make it a six-way tie for fourth. Sabbatini hands one back to slip down into a tie for 10th.

  14. Dufner holds clubhouse leadpublished at 21:00 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    J Dufner -9

Jason Dufner is the clubhouse leader, making it home at nine under par. And the American reckons the conditions could get tougher for those still out on the course at Sawgrass.

"I had a good opportunity, going out a little bit early - it will be a little bit tougher for the leaders, the wind picked up for me around nine or 10," said Dufner.

  15. Birdie for Sabbatinipublished at 20:56 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    R Sabbatini -9 (12)

That's three birdies in four holes around the turn for the South African. He joins the seven-way tie for fourth.

  16. Postpublished at 20:55 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

If Webb Simpson wasn't absolutely storming this, it would be one mighty scrap for top spot.

Seven shots behind the American in tied second sit Danny Lee and Charl Schwartzel, and one stroke behind them are SEVEN players tied for fourth.

  17. Rose fails to bloom at Sawgrasspublished at 20:52 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    Iain Carter
BBC Sport commentator at TPC Sawgrass, Florida

Not the day England's Justin Rose would have wanted. Five bogeys and only three birdies led to a one-over 73 and the Olympic champion is among the back markers at three under par.

  18. Separated at birth?published at 20:51 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

Spieth and HughesImage source, Getty Images

    Talking of Jordan Spieth...

I'm not for one second suggesting he is having a double crack at the Players Championship, but can't help thinking he's also masquerading as Canadian Mackenzie Hughes out at Sawgrass.

Luckily, for me at least, these two won't end up paired on the final day. Hughes is at -5 after the third round, Spieth at -8.

  19. Fleetwood joins Woods & Spiethpublished at 20:50 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    Fleetwood -8 (68)

    Iain Carter
BBC Sport commentator at TPC Sawgrass, Florida

England's Tommy Fleetwood finishes in style slotting home very confidently for a birdie at the last, his third in a row to cap an excellent four-under 68.

He goes into the final day at eight under par - the same as Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.

  20. Bogey for Schwartzelpublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 12 May 2018

    W Simpson -17, C Schwartzel -10 (5)

No bother for the leader, a little pitch and run, and run it does. All the way on to the green and then some, still work to do for par.

He starts his putt left, and reels it back in to watch it drop home for par. Wonderful stuff.

Charl Schwartzel opts for his putter off the fringes and coaxes it up to eight feet from the flag.

This for par... It doesn't drop! Knee-bending, putter-shaking frustration for the South African.
